This week I had an interview with Holger, but when he is in Canada his friends call him Artie, because for the Canadian people it is difficult to pronounce the name right. Holger has been in Vancouver for 8 weeks now, and upcoming Saturday he will go back to his home country Germany.
Why are you in Vancouver?
I am here to do an internship. The main purpose of my internship is to improve my English. A few years ago I was a couple of days in Vancouver, and I saw how beautiful the city is. When I got the chance to go to Toronto or Vancouver it was easy to choose, Vancouver of course! Furthermore many people say that Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
Why did you choose Canada?
I choose Canada because the people are so friendly here. Much more friendly than the Americans, I notice this when I was in America for six weeks. And I like the temperature here in Vancouver! Furthermore I like the surroundings with the beautiful landscapes, Rocky Mountains, and Vancouver Island.
What do you like most about Vancouver?
This is a hard questions, because I like so many things here in Vancouer. But I like the Grouse Mountain the most. The view is amazing, and it really feels like you are in the mountains, while it is only 30 minutes away from Downtown Vancouver. Unfortunatly I have been there only once.
How did you find INTERNeX International Exchange?
I found the company via my university.
How did you like your internship?
I like it a lot. During the first two weeks I did not had a lot of tasks and responsibilities, but after two weeks I got more work to do which was very nice and interesting. I worked at the Financial Department together with another intern, who was German as well.
What kind of tasks are you responsible for on daily basis?
During the first two weeks I had to prepare spreadsheets for the president, making copies, and give folders some structure. By doing this I learned a lot about the company.
After two weeks I got more tasks and responsabilites, I worked at the Financial Department. I had to send pay reminders to clients, prepare check deposits, work on different projects, and help with the money processing.
Is it related to the study you are doing back home?
Yes, it is related to my study. I study Taxation and Auditing. Business administration is a big part of my study. During my internship I was able to apply the theory about Business administration I learned at my university.
Where have you been in and around Vancouver?
I have done so many things to last 8 weeks! I went to Tofino, Seattle, Rocky Mountains, and Grouse Mountain. Furthermore I joined two INTERNeX-events, namely the 3-day Whistler trip and the 2-day rafting-trip in Chilliwack. Furthermore I went to Stanley Park, Jericho Beach, Spanish Banks, Queen Elizabeth Park, and Granville Island.
What is the most memorable thing you did in Canada?
There are so many things that were memorable. For example that I saw a bear in the village of Whistler, which was only two meter away from me! I run away very hard, and I tried to make some pictures!
And I will never forget East Hastings. It is unbelievable to see so many homeless people in one street! I have visit many cities in my life, but I had never seem something like that!
Furthermore I will never forget the romantic sunset at English Bay, it was so beautiful!
How long did you stay in Vancouver?
My total stay in Vancouver is 8,5 week.
What is the first thing you will do when you return back home?
I will eat ‘Paprikalyonerbrotchen’, a typical German sandwich.
Furthermore I will enjoy my room, because when I am back in Germany I do not have to share my room anymore.
What was the best thing about your Internship/your stay in Canada?
The best thing is that I improved my business English communication. Because of that, I feel more comfortable to speak to native-speakers and I am able to understand them better.
What was the worst thing about your Internship/stay in Canada?
There was nothing, when I can go back in time I will not change anything, because everything was just perfect!
Would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange?
Yes! Especially to students from my university, since we are always very busy. I focussed on my study, and INTERNeX arranged everything for me! My Accomodation, my internship etc. So when I arrived in Vancouver everything was arranged, perfect!
Thank you Holger for this interview. It is great to hear that you have a great here in Vancouver! Enjoy your last days, and I wish you the best!
Cheers,
lydia
