The End of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics

Well, 17 days and a million high five’s and endless hugs with strangers later, our games are over.  And WHAT a fitting (and in fact, necessary) end.  On Sunday, during Canada’s Gold Medal Rematch (which we earned the hard way) with the much chagrined American squad, every one of the 27 million Canadian viewers exhaled an uproarious cheer after holding our collective nation’s breath until 7:40 into overtime when Sid the Kid (or rather Sid the MAN) knotted one through the best goalie to date, Ryan Miller’s legs, crushing Star Spangled Dreams and sending the True North into a convulsive patriotic frenzy with a 3-2 overtime victory.…. And giving our generation a moment that EVERYONE will remember… where they were when THAT goal was scored.

Anyone with a heart condition nearly dropped dead on the spot when, with 24 seconds remaining, the Americans tapped in a rebound to send (what was until then) OUR game into overtime.  Much nail biting ensued and many profanities were uttered each time the red white and blues stormed in on an odd-man rush into the Canadian zone until after a mysterious moment of “where is the puck”; oh Sid put it into the net…. erupted into a torrent of flag-waving, fist-pumping, painted-face screaming mayhem.   What a moment.

What followed will go down in history as the greatest outpouring of national pride this country has EVER experienced.  From coast to coast to coast, every street and home was a bedlam of “Oh CANADA!!”, with spontaneous street hockey games breaking out and police officers with red hands from high-fiving every passer-by, to cars stopping in the streets with passengers hopping out and hugging strangers, and bus drivers honking madly waving the maple leaf out the window. WOW… what a moment.

Not only did we cap off the run by winning 14 gold medals (incidentally more than any other nation in a Winter Games to date, and ironically as most countries count medals first by gold’s won… we DID top the podium), but we topped 13 with (not really) arguably the MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL; Ice Hockey ….. okay…. Since it IS our game after all, lets just drop the “ice”……. HOCKEY.

To close this moment of our history, I would like to quote from a Brit blogger on Eurosport:

ALL CANADIANS CAN NOW STAND 10 FEET TALL… YOU ARE THE  MOST HOSPITABLE OF NATIONS… YOU ARE MODEST BUT NOW YOU  CAN REFLECT AND ENJOY THE GLORY OF YOUR NATIONS  SUCCESS… THE WINS OF GOLD IN THE MENS AND WOMENS HOCKEY  LIFTED THE GAME TO ANOTHER LEVEL… THE STAGING FROM  BEGINNING TO END WAS MAGNIFICANT, YOUR PEOPLE SO  WELCOMING AND CHARMING IN A DIGNIFIED WAY… CANADA IS TO  BE CONGRATULATED BY ALL WHO APPRECIATTE  KINDNESS, HOSPITALITY AND LOVE OF THIER  COUNTRY… CANADIANS CERTAINLY HAVE MUCH TO BE PROUD  OF… YES, YOU ARE GOOD PEOPLE… THANK YOU ALL.

So, to the world we bid adieu and thank you all for coming, and in true Canadian fashion, we really must say “sorry” for winning 14 medals, but we all look forward the next round of HOCKEY NIGHT IN (guess where) CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
