Yesterday, April 6 was a very special day in the history of Vancouver. The very young city celebrated its 125th Birthday BIG TIME at the Jack Poole Plaza, next to the Convention Center. The INTERNeX interns had the unique chance to celebrate this event together with hundreds of Vancouver’s inhabitants and international visitors, interns, students, etc. While George and Claudia prepared the PuB Night, which took place at the Forum, Elvera and me went to the Jack Poole Plaza in order to breathe in the spirit of the celebration.
The weather conditions were just perfect! No clouds and sunshine the whole day. We arrived at 7 p.m. Perfect timing since the sunset created a beautiful atmosphere to party! With the majestic mountains of North Vancouver in front of us and the skyscrapers, shimmering in the last sunbeams of the day in our back, we walked around and took many pictures which we share with all of you on FLICKR.
The whole event began at 2pm with street hockey tournaments and continued until 10pm with DJs, live music, food, street arts, special performances and more. It was truly an event for all ages! The band “Bend Sinister” was playing when we got there and they really entertained the crowd!
The most moving moment must have been the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron by Vancouver’s Mayor Gregor Robertson. Unfortunately, Elvera and me were still in the office at that time, but for those of you who have never seen the Cauldron being lighted (except on TV), you can check out a video of the 1st Anniversary of the Olympic and Paralympic Wintergames on YouTube, where they also lighted the Cauldron. And believe me, it was really touching!
And what should you not forget when you are having a birthday party? Of course…the CAKE! Everybody was walking around with it so Elvera and me did some investigation on the source of it. Finally, in a small tent we found the HUGE and sooo amazing cake which looked exactly like Vancouver (even in 3D!). Unfortunately the line-up was just too long so we didn’t get a piece…
But still, this event was extraordinary and fun!
See you on the 150th Birthday…! 😉
Did you go to the birthday party too? How was it for you?
