Hello you guys
Last week’s post being about the newest YouTube trends, the idea for today’s post came to me while looking for interesting things to do around the city. While working through my guidebook of Vancouver, I came across the name of one ‘Gassy Jack’.
Vancouver’s John ‘Gassy Jack’ Deighton is supposedly one of the very founders of the city and you can find his statue located near Carrall and Water Street. Now guess what made him a founding father? In 1867, he built one of the first houses of the original settlement Gastown, which is now one of Vancouver’s most famous neighborhoods. The interesting catch here is that this house was a pub – the Globe Saloon. Gassy Jack even built it up within 24 hours of his arrival. If you ask yourself how in the world he possibly managed that, I can tell you: He offered free whisky to the workers of the only other building in town, the sawmill. The only other drinking hole being over 25 miles away, the men readily jumped at this opportunity and had the pub ready for business the next day.
I guess this shows us once again what people need in their life: A place to work and after that – some nice conversation and a good drink with friends. This gives our weekly PuB NiGHT a completely different spin, don’t you think? So if you would like to honor one of Vancouver’s, as it seems, oldest traditions then come and join us next Wednesday again at PuB NiGHT! To get in the right mood for it you should check out this fun video I found on YouTube The Evaporators – Gassy Jack
Talk to you again next week,
Annika
