“One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.”Henry Miller
To all who don’t know me yet: Hi, my name is Laura.
If you are reading this, you are probably interested in exploring foreign countries and facing new challenges. We have something in common then. I have a passion for travel, languages, cultures, and stories. I seek change of perspective, an open mind and growth. I love meeting people and trying new things.
Three years ago, I came to Vancouver, withe the intention of just taking a gap year, after finishing my Bachelor studies (Literature, Culture, Media) in Siegen, Germany. Well, I’m still here, even though Canada never really was my destination.
Fun Fact: I didn’t really know much about this beautiful country upon my arrival. When people ask me “Why Canada?”, then I don’t even have a good answer. It was a coincidence. Originally I wanted to do an internship in New York City. For some reason that didn’t work out, so I came across the volunteer practicum program at INTERNeX here in Vancouver, and I couldn’t be happier.
My practicum was in culture management at Theatre Under the Stars in Stanley Park, where I learned a lot about Canadian work culture and unlocked some unknown abilities. The team was awesome and so much fun to work with. I still swing by sometimes to say hi. By going to all the pub nights I made a lot of friends and memories that I’ll never forget. Through all the trips with INTERNeX I saw the most beautiful corners of the Canadian West Coast.
My favourite things to do in and around Vancouver are definitely outdoors, like going to the beach and watching the sunset, or going for a hike in the mountains. The city offers a lot of events all year around, so there’s always something to do, it never gets boring. I love that Vancouver has everything in one place: city, ocean and mountains. That’s probably why I’m still here. On top of that it’s super multicultural, so there’s lots of good food from all over the world to eat and many interesting people from different cultures to meet.
My experience so far has been way better than I imagined it to be, and it definitely showed me new ways of seeing things, which ultimately was my goal.
It’s no surprise I stayed in touch with INTERNeX over all these years, even though my program was already over. I’ve always loved how Tim cares about his participants and makes sure that everyone has a good time. I wanted to be part of that too. Finally, Tim agreed to bring me onboard, since he probably realized I’m not leaving anyways. 😉 You can now call me PR and Program coordinator at INTERNeX International Exchange. 🙂
I’m really happy to be part of the team, and I hope I’ll be able to help you have a great experience as well. I’ll be organizing those pub nights where you can make new friends, those trips to show you the best parts of the Canadian West Coast, and I’m here if you have any questions.
Where do you want to go while you are here? Kelowna? Vancouver Island? The Rockies? Whistler? Is there anything you want to do in Vancouver? Let me know in the comments. 🙂
Can’t wait to see you at the next pub night and chat some more!
