We did some fun things the last couple of month! Christmas Season was packed with exciting activities around Vancouver. We visited the German Christmas Market, got to meet walking and talking ginger bread men while keeping us warm with some Gluehwein and Feuerzangenbowle. Cirque du Soleil was definitely Decembers highlight – Kooza is one incredible show. Acrobatic performances 
like the Wheel of Death or the Double Highwire mixed with the art of clowning and dancing kept
us gazing in wonder at those stunning performances all night. We celebrated the Winter Solstice at Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden, which was filled with lanterns and ornaments. To nicely end Christmas and the holidays we went to Stanley Park to see the hundreds of colorful lights that lit up the Park and boosted our Christmas mood. Our visit to the Capilano Suspension Bridge was the last event of 2015 walking from tree house to tree house.
In the first week of January we went Ice Skating at Robson Square. No one fell on their behind – except me. After a couple of rounds we warmed up with hot apple cider. The weekend after we had dinner at the legendary pizzeria Ludica. They have the tastiest pizza in Vancouver and even better – they have over 700 board games. We played Scotland Yard all night – Mr. X won the game. Last but not least we went on our amazing Whistler Trip at the end of the month. And I promise you, if yo
u visit Whistler once, you want to go back. It is such an active and fun town with tons and tons of outdoor activities to do.
To watch the 50th SuperBowl we headed to Malone’s to start drinking at 3pm. For some the game itself wasn’t to exciting but the halftime show made up for it – and the alcohol. Th
e Nexis celebrated Chinese New Year on Valentines Weekend by watching the parade and by seeing China and Canada from above at FlyOverCanada. We are excited and looking forward to the hockey game next weekend – Canucks vs. Sharks – this is going to be a fun game.
Looking back, you realize time flies. I have been organizing events for INTERNeX for a couple of month now and spend six month in this wonderful country. I had an awesome time.Soon it is time for me to move on. I am so jealous that you all will stay a while longer getting to enjoy the summer in Vancouver – the beach, the ocean, barbequing, hiking and so much more.
The trip was the perfect opportunity to get to know everyone better and I must say that those people are just amazing. Therefore it’s no surprise that we had an awesome time in Whistler with a lot of fun. Additionally we were pretty lucky with the weather.
While the actual Thanksgiving holiday is on a Monday, Canadians may gather for their Thanksgiving Dinner on any day during the long weekend. The traditional dish for the Thanksgiving dinner is roasted turkey, cranberries, and pumpkin pie.In celebration of the Canadian Thanksgiving the INTERNeX group certainly had a Thanksgiving Dinner. We spent a lovely evening on top of Vancouver’s roof. While enjoying our Dinner at the revolving restaurant in Robson Street we had an incredible view down on Vancouver.
So, every year at that time is at least one minute of silence to honor all those, we need to remember. Connected to this day is also the custom of wearing a red poppy the weeks leading up to the eleventh of November. This symbol evolved due to the popularity of a poem written by a Canadian writer and soldier John McCrae, In Flanders Fields. It is one of the most famous pieces of Canadian literature and represents the emotions connected to Remembrance Day.
This year Canada became 148 years old. In 1867 the British North America Act (today called Constitution Act) united the three colonies Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada into a single federation. The first event of the day, called Waterfront Party, started at Canada Place and was featuring various entertainments like live music, activities for children, street hockey, an armed forces show, a circus show and lots of food carts, as well. Next up was the Canada Day Parade. To finish the day with a bang, there was a firework, which we had a great view of from Canada Place.
In July we had a couple of nice alternatives to our regular Pub NiGHTS. We went to one of Vancouver’s most beautiful places: Queen Elizabeth Park and had a picnic-dinner together with pancakes, fruits, meatballs, salad, … and the list went on! After stuffing ourselves we played ball, chatted and laughed a lot.
Aside from the fireworks competition, called Celebration of Lights, there was a festival at Sunset Beach with various entertainment, vendor stalls and musical showcases.
The following day we had a little bit more spare time where we could decide whether we would like going up the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountains or simply exploring Banff before heading to Golden. On the way to Golden we stopped at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, which are regarded as two of the most famous places in the Rockies. The last day of our amazing tour we traveled back to Vancouver but not without passing Okanagan Valley to see the Last Spike and Othello Tunnels.
Champions League. The CONCACAF league includes all soccer teams from North and Central America as well as the Caribbean. That means the match between the Vancouver Whitecaps against Olympia from Honduras was quite a big deal. Before we marched together with many other Whitecaps supporters to BC Place we met up with the language school students at Doolin’s Irish Pub.
So I told everyone back home that I decided go to Canada and work and after waiting what felt like forever to get the visa, I finally left Sweden this June.
Then my second experience with INTERNeX was day after I arrived and they set me up for my job interview and gave me advice on what I need to live in a city like Vancouver. After that I got to meet Amiel and Natasja who were the PR persons at the time and they put on all kinds of events but I mostly only went to the weekly pub nights which were a really fun time. All these events they put on helped me meet so many new awesome people. I also got to see Richmond night market, do Laser Tag and have barbecues and picnics.
That is just one of many experience I have had so far here in Vancouver and I will have so many more because I have just been here 6 months and I still have almost 6 months to go.
Natasja, a 23-year-old student from the Netherlands, who came to Vancouver for doing a practicum as part of her Bachelor study program. As a PR Coordinator she was responsible for organizing trips in and outside Vancouver, organizing Pub NiGHTS but also the contact person when a candidate encountered difficulties.
The itinerary is basically the same: we first stopped in Hope, Kamloops, then Valmont, Jasper, Golden and Banff. Among others we visited Mount Robson, the Last Spike, Lake Louise and many other highlights you need to see when you are in the Rockies. Everyone brought food, drinks and snacks. Chris brought a volleyball and Laura a Frisbee so we could throw around. Proudly I can say that we enjoyed the summer to the fullest!
