What could be more refreshing than a cold drink? Especially since the past few days it’s become warmer and warmer in Vancity. So how can we compensate this “intense” heat?

Just wait for the 11th of July. On this day, 7-eleven is giving out free Slurpees. This day is also understood as the birthday of 7-eleven. Quite clever, huh? 😉 Back to the Slurpee. You never heard of a Slurpee before? One more reason to go for it on the 11th of July. But for those that want to know before they go, I will give a short briefing: A Slurpee is basically really fine, crushed ice, mixed with a flavour of your choice. The range of flavours is big: from Coca-Cola to Mountain Dew and fruits like lime, grape, orange or banana. Mouth-watering, isn’t it? 😋 My advice: If you fall in love with the Slurpee, get a loyalty card and every 7th drink will be for free for you! So, go ahead and get slurping. 🥤

BUT, the Slurpee is not the only drink you can get for free the upcoming days. The 14th of July is Root Beer Day at A&W. Ever tried this non-alcoholic beer? To be honest, it does not really have anything in common with regular beer, except for the foam when freshly poured in a glass. It has an incomparable taste and is very refreshing. Go for it and give it a try. At A&W it is produced using all natural ingredients, so don’t worry, nothing artificial about this one! My advice: Sign up for coupons on the A&W website. With these coupons, you will get top-ups on your orders or a free side to your order. Who does not love free pancakes or an upgrade to sweet potato fries?

Are all those sweet drinks not really for you? I do have an alternative. It also includes a drink (Bubble Tea or Thai Ice Tea) and a healthy Poké bowl. 🍲 And this for only $5. Where you can get this amazing offer? It’s at the Poké and Sushi Restaurant “Daddy’s Kitchen” (2586 Commercial Drive). That’s not even a minute walk from the Expo Line station Commercial-Broadway.

Since we know summer can become quite expensive we wanted to give you some ideas on things to do with a discount.

If you have been thinking about going kayaking to beat the heat, going to Bowen Island might be a good option for you. You can kayak around the island and get beautiful scenery. And if you go on a Tuesday with your friend, you can get two for the price of one!

Another fun thing to do is to go to Squamish and take the Sea to Sky Gondola. The normal price for the gondola is about $40 dollars, but if you go after 5 pm on Saturdays you get a 50% discount. And if you’re feeling adventures you could hike up and take the gondola down for only $15.

If you like to go to amusement parks you should definitely check out Playland. This is the oldest amusement park in Canada and it’s located at Hastings Park. You can get discounted tickets for the park at 7 eleven.

Going a bit further away for Vancouver can become expensive, as renting cars isn’t always that cheap here. If you’re going to stay here for a longer period it might be a good idea to check out Modo. This car sharing service is similar to car2go and Evo, except that you can book the car for weekends an take it further away. You pay a monthly fee for the subscription, but that’s only about $8. The car comes with a credit card to pay for gas and you get the first 200 km for free, after that you pay 20 cents per kilometer.

Smart Saver Vancouver

It’s Wednesday again, which means it’s time for the Smart Saver! We found some great deals for you to help save some money.

If you would like to go out to watch a movie, it’s a good idea to do that on a Tuesday at Cineplex since they offer cheaper tickets for “Cineplex Tuesdays”. Instead of the regular $ 11.99 admission you will only have to pay $ 7.99, which is a pretty good price for going to the movies. If going out to watch a movie is something you like doing more often I would also recommend becoming a SCENE member, this will give you an additional 10% discount and you can earn points to get rewards.

When you’re doing groceries it might be a good idea to check out certain products at 7 Eleven. They have great deals on soda’s and chips. They also serve food such as hotdogs and pizzas that are cheap and a good option if you’re in a hurry or just looking for a quick snack.

Using a foreign bank account can become quite expensive if you take a look at the fees, so a lot of people choose using cash instead. When you withdraw money there is usually a fee attached as well, but Iris found out that the HSBC machines charge you only $2 instead of the usual $3. However, you might be one of the lucky ones that can use Scotia banks Global ATM Alliance, which means you won’t get charged any extra fees at all. Only certain banks are a part of the Global ATM Alliance, click here to go to their website to check if your bank is part of the alliance.

Going out for dinner doesn’t have to be expensive in Vancouver, you just got to make sure you go to the right spot. Something everybody likes is pasta and we found two great places to go. First off there is Ciao Bella, a real Italian restaurant where you get 50% off on meals every Monday and Tuesday night and everyday at lunch. Then there is The Old Spaghetti Factory, here you can get a three course menu for only $15.

You might have noticed that yesterday was Valentine ’s Day, so if you really like chocolate like most of us in the office do (except for me), you might be able to score some that are on sale!
