“I will never be completely home again” – Tess

I left the Netherlands the 11th of Januari 2017. A date I was freaking out, and a date that was going to change my life forever. I didn’t realize this really around that time, but I do now, and I am truly grateful that I had the opportunity to come to Vancouver to flip my life around.

A few days before that exact date I threw a party, to say goodbye to everybody. My friends gave me a book then, full of stories about our friendships and me. A book I was going to take a look at a lot during my time in Vancouver. A book that gave me two guidelines for my time here, and maybe for the rest of my life:

“ Fill your life with adventures, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show.”

“ Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it”

And although my suitcases are packed full of new clothes since shopping is just cheaper for me here, I do really think life is all about adventures and taking risks. Doubting? Just do it! This international experience has only done me good and it would not have been the same without Internex and what Internex brought me.

I learned so much in the office and it is all because the people there are always very supportive and gave me the opportunity to reach goals I didn’t even dream of yet. Together with the team I organised many PuB NiGHTS, weekly events and monthly trips for you! Some of them were really good, and some of them were just great! The success of our events is all because of you, our candidates, who always make it even more eventful for us. I really want to thank all of you for always being there, showing up and even do stuff together aside of Internex events. In the end that is all we want, for you to make friendships and to have an awesome time here together.

20170430_170549Me myself made friends for life here as well, friends who made my time a blast here! I can’t believe what activities and weird stuff I all did with you. Like the time Nicola and me thought it was a great idea to go snowboarding while being hungover. I laughed so much that day and in the end I was going down the hill circling around, which was pretty cool since I’ve never done that before. I also think we went on like 3 goodbye dinners, since we were not that good in leaving each other! I’m sure I will see this girl very soon again.

One of my other best memories is a surfing trip I made with Iris and Merle to Tofino.Catching those waves all together on a lovely Sunday morning was one of the best feelings I ever experienced, and I am happy they were part of that. Or just always having lovely Miriam and Sebastian around, who were here almost my entire stay. I adored the time I spend with you! And our lovely Mexican girl Blanca, who made everybody tostada’s on Danielles birthday party. It is really those little things I appreciate the most and you all contributed making my adventure so remarkable.

“Havo stories to tell, not stuff to show”

20479642_10203416092358766_5913697107759519650_nI had the honour to catch al our candidates stories and experiences through my project: the Candidate Exposé, which you might already have seen popping up on this blog. I am thankful that I was able to build this project and to execute it, and to always read your kind words about the work Internex is doing. Our stories together are captured in a few yearbooks, which you can find on the tables at Internex. I hope the book and the blogs make people decide to come to Canada for an experience similar like ours, since I am convinced it will be really good for everybody to have an international experience.
Vancouver and mostly you stole a piece of my heart. It’ s so hard for me to put my experiences on paper since it is just beyond words. I have a hard time saying goodbye to all of you, and unfortunately I already had to say goodbye a lot of times over the past months, which is also a part of this adventure. I do know though it is not going to be a goodbye for a long time. I will see some of you soon, and some later, but I am convinced our journeys will cross again some time. Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% how we react to it, so always go for it and get the best out of everything! I am curious what life is going to bring you, and me, because what the hell are we going to do when we are back home?

I am sure everything will fall into place very soon and I can look forward to my next adventure, meet even more people and create new experiences, but I always have a big one to look back to.

I will never be completely home again, because part of my heart will always be elsewhere. That is the price I paid for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place. Thank you lovely candidates, Internex, Vancouver and Canada for stealing a piece of my heart.

Smartsaver Vancouver

Summer is here, which usually means spending more money… Therefore it might be a good idea to check out these ideas to save some money.

Canada 150

It might be a good idea to get a Discovery pass. Canada celebrates its 150th birthday together with you by giving out the Discovery passes. With these passes you can enter several national heritage sites and national parks in Canada such as Fort Langley and Kicking Horse Pass without paying any admissions. You can either order these passes online or visit one of Parks Canada’s partners. For example, you could go to Mountain Equipment Co-op in Vancouver to get your Discovery Pass.

If you are planning on doing a roadtrip to one of the national parks in Canada, then you only need to have one Discovery Pass per vehicle. Parks in BC include: Glacier National Park, Gulf Islands National Park, Gwaii Haanas National Park, Pacific Rim National Park, Mount Revelstoke National Park and Yoho National Park. There are also several other free events taking place in this year because of Canada’s 150th birthday, so you should definitely check it out!

When you rather go on an adventure in Vancouver, then you can try out Geocaching. When you’re playing Geocaching you are on a treasure hunt for hidden objects. These objects can be anywhere throughout the city, so it might be that there is one close to you right now! Geocaching gives you the opportunity to explore Vancouver in a different way and to discover new places, so it is a great option when you already saw all the normal tourist attractions in Vancouver.

Good luck on your new adventures! I hope this all will help you to save money, because you will definitely need it for the Rockies trip!

PR-team adventures

As some of you may know, my parents visited me in May and we went on a road trip on Vancouver Island. Although we had many amazing moments, one stood out by far for me: surfing in Tofino.

I already wanted to go surfing for years, but the moment never came until the idea did arise on our way to Tofino, which is kind of the surfing Walhalla around here. So I called the Tofino Surf School and they were immediately able to book me in on an afternoon class. I was so stoked to do this, but once I booked it I was also kind of creeped out because I saw those massive waves earlier that day and me being a 1.65 cm girl would easily get washed away by it. But there was no turning back now, so I showed op for my surf class at 4 pm.

Once I was in the office I was provided with some boots and a wetsuit, which is the hardest thing to get on (later on I found out this was nothing compared to the wet thing I needed to get off after class, which was really the hardest thing ever). We were ready to go and drove behind our surf teacher who had all the boards with him.

When we got to the beach I chose a nice red surfboard and thought it was lighter then I surfing1imagined. Though, once I saw the long path I still needed to take to the beach while carrying my board, I was already kind off exhausted before I even got to surf. But we managed eventually and we were ready to surf! It was not that simple and after the instructions on how to stand up, we first needed to do these steps with our boards on the beach, which felt really awkward and funny. So I was paddling and paddling… through the sand and managed to get up at the first time! Just joking, that is easy with that surface of course.

But I was ready and our teacher sent us of in the ocean. I was scared it would be really surfing2cold, but once I was in I was actually sweating in the water if that is even possible. I really got to experience how high and strong those waves are and it really made me speechless how strong nature is. I was ready to roll with it with my board. So I was paddling and paddling… and got up at the first time! No joke! It was so amazing to just get along with the wave while you get to see beautiful nature surrounding it. After that I got up a few times more, which was just amazing. After that I kind of got too excited and tired, so I started making mistakes and I couldn’t stand up anymore. It came to an end and I thanked my teacher for the great lesson, while already feeling sore in my entire body. You don’t really feel it while surfing because you are just in a rush, but it is such a workout and I had sore muscles for at least three days!

Despite all that soreness it was just great and I would always remember it! I also think if surfing3you just love something and you may be able to do it, just go for it. So I just got out of the Discover Canada Tours office to book my next trip to Tofino with Iris. I am really happy I am going to improve my skills on those waves and to make new memories while surfing!

So guys little advise here; do the things you always wanted to do while you may still be able to do them! And go surfing, surfing is just great. Our PuB NiGHTS too, so I hope to see you tonight!

PR-team Adventures

Since finding some sweet deals for you can be quite hard in Vancouver, we are changing our blogposts a bit. We are still aiming to find great offers for you with the Smart Saver Vancouver, but we will only post the blogposts every other week from now on. To still keep you entertained, we are going to post some of our adventures in Canada. Those can be some fun things we experience in the office, excited trips we have made, or just random but great stories we want to share with you guys! We are starting off with some pranks we pull in the office.

So Becky, our crazy English girl in the office, went on a little trip to Toronto. Although we missed her since it was so quiet without her in the office, we always like to pull a prank when people come back in the office again. Since she is so excited with geo-cashing, a sort of treasure hunt on the streets worldwide, we decided to make a Becky-cashing.
After some good stalking on Facebook, we found great faces of our lovely Becky. We made them smaller, printed them and placed them all over the office. There was a Becky in the microwave, one on the milk and a few between all the pictures on our picture wall. Yeah, good luck with finding those Becky.

For a more warming welcome, we made her a little treasure map. As soon shbeckytreasurehunte set step into the office, the hunt began. It was so funny to see how excited she was! Although she had a treasure map, she was almost too excited to see all her pretty faces and she missed some really obvious ones. But in the end she had all of them; 28 Becky faces.

We still have not removed all the faces yet, so we can still have a laugh! So if you are stopping by the office and take a look at Becky’s desk, it might be possible to see some beautiful Becky faces.

I hope to see you all tonight at PuB NiGHT to even have a bigger laugh, some drinks and chatting of course 🙂

Canada Day

I hope everyone had a great Canada day! On Thursday, myself and some friends went to a Canada Day party (hosted by West Trek and Moose Travel Network) near Jericho beach. There was a barbecue, drinks, music and lots of games!

If you’re not already aware, Moose Travel Network is Canada’s adventure bus system for backpackers, students and “young at heart” travellers. The company was established in 1997 by two Canadian entrepreneurs who wanted to show visitors the real Canada. Inspired by the successful examples set by companies in Australia and New Zealand, they started offering trips from Vancouver and Toronto.

Since then, Moose has carried thousands of satisfied passengers many tens of thousands of kilometers throughout this beautiful country. Moose has built an excellent international reputation for quality service and memorable experiences. If you’re interested in a hop-on, hop-off adventure, we can help you book your trip! Drop by the INTERNeX office and our representatives will inform you of all of their trips and tours happening across Canada! For more information on the Moose Travel Network, visit their website.

Looking for a day trip or a weekend adventure? Well West Trek has taken tens of thousands of ESL students and international travelers on tours to some of Western Canada’s most amazing scenery and attractions.

What began as a one man show back in 1998 has now blossomed into one of Western Canada’s largest tour operations.  West Trek got it’s start running small group camping and canoeing tours.  They offer tours to the Rocky Mountains, Victoria, Whistler, Tofino, Seattle and Portland! INTERNeX can help you book white water rafting trips, wine tasting tours and whale watching tours as well! For more information on West Trek and their services, visit their website.

INTERNeX also offers a variety of events and activities, such as Paintballing and Pub Night! Take a look at our event calendar to see what’s up this month with INTERNeX!
