Candidate Exposé – Andreas Bächler

Andreas Bachler3

My name is Andreas. I’m 21 years old and I’m from Denmark. I came to Canada in May 2016 and I am going home now one year later. At the moment I’m not studying anything but I plan to do so after the summer. Which education, I’m not sure about yet. The reason I came to Canada is that I went to Toronto to visit some family in 2009. Back then I fell in love with the country and decided then I would return one day.

Before I knew about INTERNeX I was in contact with a Danish travel agency, Travel Alott, who helped people like me – people who want to explore the world – to reach our dreams. They directed me to INTERNeX, who I was told operated in Canada and therefore would be able to help me out with my dream, which was to go abroad and work for a year in Canada.

I participated in the Work and Travel program, because I wanted to earn some money as well during my stay so I was able to go on small trips around Canada and the US without being worried about money. I liked it, even though I worked a lot I got to see everything I wanted to see when I came. Even a bit extra that I didn’t expect to do before I came. It was indeed a good mix of “Work” and “Travel” during my stay in Canada.

I was placed at a coffeeshop in North Vancouver. I was a barista and made delicious drinks for the customers. I liked the work a lot. Even though I had to spend an hour and a half in the bus to get there, it was worth it. The beautiful location was just amazing. From the counter we had a great view over the ocean and the mountains in the horizon. It was, more or less, always busy and the customers were so nice and polite and were always interested in knowing where you were from. I had the best colleagues and a good relationship with my boss. If I wanted some days off for a trip to wherever, my boss always did everything he could to make it possible. So to sum up, I couldn’t’ t have imagined a better place to have worked at.

Andreas Bachler4

To work at a coffeeshop you need to be good with people, have some good communication skills and be able to work under stress. Sometimes there were cues to the door and you might had 5 drinks lined up, so you should be able to keep yourself calm and still be able to work fast. Cooperation is an important skill as well, because you might work with two or three persons and you needed to be sure who did what and when, so you still would be able to make drinks for the customers but also do the different chores that need to be done, such as cleaning.

If you wanted to, you could also try out latte-art, which is a creative way to make the drinks better. You taste with your eyes as well and therefore a heart or nice flower in your latte will make the drink better for most people. It took a bit more effort than making a regular drink, but people always were so happy when they got it, which made it worth it.

During my stay I lived with a host family arranged by INTERNeX in East Vancouver and I absolutely loved it. I felt welcome from the first day till the last. My first impression of Vancouver was, how friendly and open its people were. I had chats with people everywhere I went, in the bus, on the streets etc. It was really cool, made me feel welcome to their city.

I still have the impression now that Vancouver has a really open-minded population. Its big diversity of people makes everybody feel like home, no matter where you are from. Besides that I just fell in love with the city after a while. If not for the people, then just for the beautiful location Vancouver has. Close to the ocean and the mountains and only one hour away from the US. It couldn’t’ t be any better.

I tried to participate in as many INTERNeX events as possible. Pub nights, trips, Andreas Bachler (words)everything. I enjoyed them a lot. I thought it was a great place to meet people. And putting the pub nights on a Wednesday was the best idea ever, since putting pineapple on pizza. The PR-team was always good to help out new people and make them feel part of the group.

I went to the Rockies, Portland and Kelowna with INTERNeX. Besides that we went hiking a couple of times, had a Halloween party, saw the Chinese New Year Parade, celebrated Canada day and much more. Besides that I visited Whistler, Bowen Island, Sunshine Coast, Toronto and Victoria.

What I like most about Vancouver is the diversity of people and the beautiful surroundings. Canada in general I would say the people. No matter where I’ve been to in the country, I always met friendly and helpful people.

The only challenge I really had to face here was when it was winter and there was a lot of snow around, it was I’d say challenging to find a bus that drove so I could get to work.

It is really hard to find one really memorable thing so I will just mention a few.

  • When I went to the Rockies with INTERNeX. We had such a fun time. I saw a lot of beautiful nature and partied with the best folks at night.
  • When I hiked Black Tusk. We were with five people and it took us 10 hours from where we left the car till we got back. The view from he top of the mountain was gorgeous and incomparable to everything I’ve seen before.
  • All the times I went to Whistler. When I went there with my parents during the summer and hiked on top of the mountains. Also the times I rented a car with friends and made a short road trip out of it.
  • And of course all the times I’ve been skiing. I finally learned it, and now I miss it. Cypress Mountain and The Big White it was an awesome time.

Andreas Bachler1

INTERNeX really helped me to get started. They advised me about a mobile plan, bank and tax return. And if you ever had questions at all, about anything, they were always happy to help you out. So I would recommend the service of INTERNeX to others.

The first thing I will do when I get back home is just having a descent Danish meal with my parents and brothers. The trip definitely inspired me to travel more. This summer I’m going to travel a bit around Europe to visit people I’ve met in Vancouver.

INTERNeX Canada: Exposé Of The Week ft Ilse Hofman

This week, we are interviewing Ilse Hofman who came from The Netherlands to work in Canada. She has been in Vancouver for almost 4 months since February this year. So here is what she had to say about her experience in Canada:

Why did you go to Canada?
Most of the younger Dutch people who wants to go abroad, go to Australia or the States. Australia is really expensive and I want to be different! I choose Canada because of the beautiful nature and I definitely do not regret my choice.

How long are you staying here?
I arrived in the beginning of February in Vancouver and will stay here till October. Until that time I will be working here and go on trips to other places of course. From October till January I will go travelling to the east of Canada and some places in the United States. I will fly back home at the end of February.

What kind of work are you doing, where have you worked?
My first job was at Blenz (coffee shop). I worked there for 2,5 months as a Barista. I had to travel 1,5 hours by bus to get there so after a while I started to find another job, closer to my home. Right now I’m working as a server in a restaurant of a private tennis club next to the beach and closer to my home.

How did you get your jobs?
Internex arranged the job interviews and advised me what I should say and what not to say. Applying for a job here is very different than applying for a job in The Netherlands so all the advise and tips were really helpful.

My landlord helped me getting the job as a server in the restaurant from the private tennis club. He is a member and knew that the club was looking for servers. He told me that and I was enthusiastic right away, than he talked to the F&B manager. The next day I got the contact details and I sent an e-mail to the manager and the day after I had my job interview. 2 weeks later I started and quit the job at Blenz.

What kind of tasks are you responsible for on daily basis?
When I worked at Blenz, I advised people about the products, handled payments, made the drinks and sometimes I made latte art! Of course cleaning was one of the things we had to do as well.

In the restaurant I am serving the guests, take their orders, serving drinks, handling payments. At the end of the shift we are cleaning all the tables and chairs and set up the tables for the next day/evening.

What is the best thing about your work?
During this work abroad my English improved a lot. That’s mainly because I use different expressions than I learned on school. I use a broader vocabulary.

Also, I meet new people that have different cultures. All the Canadians here are really kind and helpful. Especially in the beginning it was strange that everyone says; hi, how are you doing?  In The Netherlands, people will look at you and think: why do you ask, you don’t mean a thing!

What do you like most about Canada and Vancouver?
As I was telling before the people are so nice and helpful. I meet a lot of people and whole Vancouver is kind of your friend, people will tell their whole life stories while you are sitting in the bus or sky train next to them.

There are also a lot of things to do here in the city. In the winter you can go for skiing in the surrounding mountains. In the summer you can go to the beach, if the weather is nice of course! Other things you can do in Vancouver are hiking, visiting parks, like Stanley Park and shopping of course.

What trips did you do in your free time, also organized by INTERNeX?
In my first week in Vancouver we went to Cypress Mountain for skiing. Flora and I got lost at the end of the day, we are both no pro’s and we came out at the black part. We climbed back to the junction to the other way.

With St. Patricks day we saw the Parade with a few other and after that we had lunch together and did some shopping. With Easter I went to the Rockies with INTERNeX. It was an amazing trip, one of the must do’s in Canada!

In the beginning I went to the PuB NiGHTS almost every week. It is a great way to meet new people and friends!

Do you attend the weekly Pub-Night organized by INTERNeX and do you think this is a good way to meet new people?
In the beginning I went to most of the pub-nights. We became friends with each other and shared stories. But right now I’m not going that often, because the most days I am working in the evening.

Why did you choose INTERNeX International Exchange?
Internex is the partner from the travel agency in Holland. They told what Internex could do for me while I am in Canada and everything did sound really good.

What is the best thing about INTERNeX International Exchange?
They always want to help you and they always will make time for you. Internex knows a lot about other cultures, so they can advise you very well what to say and what not to say in example a job interview.

How did you find a place to stay?
Mina, who is working for INTERNeX knew someone who knew a another person who had a basement suite available. I took a look there and after a few days the place was mine!

How did INTERNeX International Exchange help you to organize your trip to Canada?
The travel agency in The Netherlands helped me with booking my flights. Internex was already looking for job opportunities and on my second day Flora, the PR intern, told me a lot about Vancouver, the transit system and other good things to know.

Would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange?
Yes I will! As I said they help me with everything. They make you feel comfortable in the city. I think the nicest thing about Internex that if you come to Canada by yourself, you don’t feel alone when you arrive.

Thank you Ilse for sharing your experiences in Canada with us and for all the great memories during your stay here!

Cheers,

Jelle

INTERNeX Canada: Smart Saver Vancouver

Do you know what Matcha green tea is? It’s finely milled or fine powder green tea from Japan! Matcha tea is popular during tea ceremonies and is used to flavor and dye foods such as mochi, soba noodles, green tea ice cream, and a variety of wagashi (Japanese confectionery). Another neat thing about Matcha green tea is that it is full of nutrients and antioxidants! Never tried it? Well now is your chance, because Blenz is giving away their green tea drinks for FREE during the month of April!  The great thing about this is that you get to try cold drinks instead of hot! Perfect for this Spring weather, don’t you think? 😉

Mark down these dates:

April 3rd -Shaken Matcha lemonade

April 10th -Iced Matcha latte

April 17th – Matchachillo

But this offer is only between 2 pm to 3 pm…so I bet there is going to be a long line!

Cheers,

Flora

INTERNeX Canada: How was your weekend?

Another Monday, another week. But this past weekend was awesome because yesterday, we went down to Chinatown and watched the Chinese New Year parade!

I can’t describe to you how cold, squished, and hungry I was while standing to watch the parade. But it was still a lot of fun being out there with hundreds of people! We saw people dressed up in traditional Chinese clothing, people with masks, dressed up as dragons, snakes, and tons more! We all found it really funny how there was so much corporate advertisement in the parade! For example, both CTV and CBC were involved with the parade and were giving out red envelopes with candy inside it… but the envelopes had their logos!

After we watched the entire parade, we made our way up to the Classical Chinese Garden and walked around. But the most difficult part of the day was trying to find a good Chinese restaurant which wasn’t insanely busy (definitely wasn’t going to happen). Which is why we made out way out of Chinatown and after much searching, we finally found a decent place for a late lunch!

For many of us, including myself, the parade was a new experience! Personally, I thought it was so awesome how, not only Asians, but people from every ethnic background were involved in the Chinese New Year parade as well as there to watch it. It’s always a good thing to be able to open up to new cultures and experiences…and Canada is a perfect place for that!

After our lunch, we all decided to go to the Vancouver Public Library for a little sightseeing (since it was way too cold to be outside). And then to end the day, we went to Blenz for some hot drinks and to chat. For more pictures from our trip to the Chinese New Year parade, check it out at our Flicker page here!

What fun stuff did you do last weekend?

Cheers,

Flora

Video Testimonial

Meet Ali, a 21-year-old student from Turkey. When he walked into the office smiling, we could immediately tell that he had a great personality! As he sat down to chat with us, his casually unbuttoned shirt defined his easy-going attitude and we could tell he was enjoying his time in Vancouver!

Check out what Ali learned while in Canada!
