What to do on the weekend? – When it rains and you’re broke

It’s a typical Raincouver weekend according to the weather forecast, so it’s not much fun spending time outside. And if you are like me on a budget because you spent too much over the Holidays, or because Vancouver is simply expensive, then it seems like staying home would be the best alternative. But you’re not here to spend time alone in your room, so I want to give you a few suggestions that are not too pricey and get you out of the house this weekend!

Number 1: Come join us for a round of bowling or a game of pool on Friday night at the Commodore Lanes on Granville Street. We’ll have a little competition and the winner gets a free drink. 😉 For 1 hour of bowling we only pay $12 per person, plus $4.75 for the shoe rental. If you prefer playing pool, it costs you $19 per hour and you can of course share the cost with the other players. 🙂 You are even allowed to bring your own food inside with you, that way you don’t have to spend anything on expensive restaurants, plus it’ll be loads of fun! Have you been bowling before? Are you a beginner like me, or a pro?

Number 2: If you haven’t tried it yet, I recommend you go ice skating at Robson Square! It’s free and the skate rental only costs $5, plus it’s covered by a roof, so it’s rain proof. You can stay as long as you want, the music and some colourful lights make it feel like a disco on ice. A few of us went last week and we had a blast! None of us was really experienced which made it a lot of fun. 😀 One tip though, choose the time you go at wisely as it can get pretty busy on the ice! Another idea would be combining it with a nice snack from one of the food trucks at Robson Square after – I personally like the one that sells Shawarma and Falafel – or just wander along Granville Street, maybe go window shopping?

Number 3: If you like reading check out the Vancouver Public Library on West Georgia Street. Grab a coffee, pick a book and relax in one of their comfortable chairs. (I love to go to the highest floor it’s really pretty up there). They have a vast selection of books and genres, the atmosphere is quiet, but not like you could hear a pin drop, you can probably even hear the rain drops crashing against the glass. There’s some really nice coffee shops around and to be honest, what is cozier on a rainy day than sitting inside, reading a book, drinking a hot beverage and watching the rain fall down on the city?

No matter if action or relaxation, I hope you find the motivation to go out and explore a little bit this weekend, thus all the rain!

Have a lovely weekend and I’ll see you soon.

Cheers,

Laura 🙂

How was your weekend?

It’s Friday, Friday, got to get down on Friday. Everybody’s looking forward to the weekend, weekend… I was super-duper excited about the fact that it was weekend. Why? Well, I had a bunch of fun activities planned and I will tell my story about the weekend now:

After work on Friday, there is no better way to celebrate the beginning of the weekend than with a good dance at a club. For me, this meant line dancing at the Yale Saloon in downtown. Every Friday, the club has Cowgirl Friday, which means free entry for women until 11pm. Additionally to that, there is line dancing from 8pm until 11pm. It was my first time doing line dancing, but I am already considering buying some cowboy shoes.

Happy International Pillow Fight Day! On Saturday, we all gathered secretly in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, our pillows ready to be used. At 3pm sharp, the flash mob started. A few hits on my back, a few on my head, a few pillows into my side. People showed no mercy. OK, they did, since no one was harmed seriously and fluffy PILLOWS were used. After 20 fun, exciting and exhausting minutes, it was over again. So, what to do to keep the level of happiness? Of course, bowling! We went to the Commodore Bowling & Billiards and played for an hour. The two teams were boys vs. girls and luckily, both teams won once. Since all this playing is tiring and makes people hungry, we first enjoyed a coffee and later tasty sushi. With a full belly and a little headache (maybe the pillow fight did affect me more than I expected) I went to bed happily.

11am, I wake up after almost 12 hours of sleep. Wow, I think I really needed that. Best thing right after I woke up: my roommate brought me coffee to bed and pancakes were waiting for me to be eaten. Yep, I could get used to that. In the afternoon, we headed to the Vancouver Aquarium. We observed cute otters, were fascinated by jelly fishes, listened to the vocals of the sea lions and saw a 4D movie about sharks. Three hours rushed by extremely fast!

Hopefully, you all had a great weekend, too! See you on Wednesday at PuB NiGHT at the Portside Pub!

What to do on the weekend?

Rain, light rain, showers. The weather forecast for this weekend does not seem that promising, but no reason to despair. Vancouver has many indoor activities to offer, so let’s take a look at your options to enjoy a fun weekend.

Friday night. What about kicking off the weekend in one of the many pubs and clubs? My plan for tonight: Line dancing at the Yale Saloon. A professional dancer is showing the crowd how the real cowboys party. After the small teaching lesson, the night continues with DJ sounds and bull riding. Just enter before 9.30pm and you do not have to pay cover. Ladies, you even have free entrance until 11pm, since it is ladies night at the Yale Saloon on Fridays. If you are looking for something more relaxing, just take a walk in Gastown and get yourself a drink in one of the many cozy bars.

Saturday = International Pillow Fight Day. All over the world, people secretly get together and do a pillow fight. Rotterdam, Barcelona, Vienna, Melbourne, Seattle, Hong Kong and many more cities participate and so does Vancouver. And we, of course! We will meet at 2.30pm in front of the Vancouver City Centre Skytrain Station. Bring your own pillow and join the fun! Afterwards, we are planning on going bowling. It’s a bit different than the European bowling, so you should definitely try it out.

Sunday. After sleeping in and a great breakfast, it should be time for some relaxed indoor activities, for example a stroll in a museum. You can choose between the Museum of Anthropology, Maritime Museum, Police Museum, Museum of Vancouver, Art Gallery and many more options. There is something for everybody. The Science World (exactly5601230552_924f0e3fa3_n, the big shining globe near the stadium) is definitely worth a visit. Check out their current photography exhibitions “On the Spot: Instant Stories” or “GroundTruth – Anatomy of a Pipeline”. In the Science World, you can also experience a short movie shown on one of the largest screens in the world. Amazon Adventure, A Beautiful Planet and America’s Music Journey are currently on the programme.

Even if it does not feel like Spring yet: leave the house and explore the city, there is so much to do. I hope to see many of you and your pillows on Saturday!

How was your weekend?

Wow, that went fast! Weekend is already over. Time flies when you are having fun. Now the first question this Monday you probably need to answer is: “How was your weekend?” I also got this question this morning and this was my reply:

“Great” I answered when I was walking like a zombie to the coffee machine. On Friday after work I went with The Investor Group, Lucas’ work, to the Comedy Night. There were three comedians who all got me laughing. So they did a good job. Afterwards we went to The Dime to have some long islands with Corona’s on top. Never seen that before, but it tastes good. Because the night was still young, we decided to go to The Bourbon were we met the others from INTERNeX.

Next day I had to show someone my room, because I am moving out. When I looked around I decided to make it look good and rentable. After the showing I went bowling and we had to go to the Bourbon again. You are asking why? To see if Eirik was doing well with his new job he offered the night before. We played some beer pong and pool.

Sunday was a good day. There was no rain falling out of the clouds, so I had to use that and do something outside. I looked at my to do list and decided to go to the first unchecked thing on the list: The Lighthouse park. When I arrived there I looked on the map and decided where to go and what to see. The sky cleared up and I could enjoy a nice sunset after climbing the different look out spots. When the sun was under and it was getting darker, it was time for me to go. So how was your weekend? Tell me all about is at the next PuB NiGHT!

INTERNeX Canada: What to do on the weekend!

The summer is over finally, and we need to look for alternative plans because it will probably rain during the weekend in Vancouver !!

INTERNeX goest to Victoria, to enjoy the amazing capital of British Columbia. We’ll enjoy the Empress Hotel, the Parliament Buildings, the Beacon Hill Park, the Inner Harbour, Chinatown…and enjoy the pubs and the best ice cream of Victoria !!

For those who are staying in Vancouver, here there are a few things you can do if the weather doesn’t allow you to enjoy the outdoor activities.

Option number 1: Go to the cinema and watch a movie !!

That’s without doubt my favorite option when it’s raining or just when I need to relax a little bit. You can also stay at home and watch in in your pc, but the experience of watching a movie in a big screen is more than worth it !! Right in Tinseltown International Village we have a Cineplex Odeon Cinema.

The movies are being played are:

  • Austenland
  • Blue Jasmine
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Ekstra
  • Lee Daniels’ The Butler
  • My lucky star
  • Nothing left to fear
  • One direction- This is us
  • Pacific Rim
  • The art of the steal
  • The conjuring
  • The grandmaster
  • The mortal instruments: City of Bones
  • The wolverine
  • This is the end

Where: Cineplex Odeon International Village Cinemas ( 88 West Pender Street, 3rd Floor )

Option number 2: Bowling !!

If you don’t like a lot the idea of going to the cinema, you can enjoy a nice afternoon bowling with your friends!

Right in downtown, there is a place called “Commodore Lanes & Billiards”.

They have 12 Lanes of 5-pin bowling, 21 billiard tables, arcade, fooseball tables and much more !!

Where: Commodore Lanes & Billiards. 838 Grandville Street.

I hope it helped guys !

Best,

Mercedes
