Smart $aver Vancouver

Good day INTERNex family,

Smart $aver Vancouver is here to help you enjoy our beautiful city to the fullest without breaking the bank.   Summer has officially started so put those rain jackets aside and get ready to experience this city like a life-long local.

A great place to soak up some sunshine in South Vancouver is Queen Elizabeth Park located at 33rd Avenue and Cambie Street. Take in the natural beauty of the carefully landscaped gardens, discover the secret waterfall while walking the lower trail, hit the links at the 18-hole pitch n putt course for $16 (club rentals included) or enjoy a round of tennis on one of the 18 newly renovated tennis courts.   What’s great about this place is that it doesn’t attract the major crowds like downtown’s Stanley Park so you can be free to enjoy the surroundings in peace.  Parking here is also free in the South lot and there’s plenty of bicycle parking all over the park.

Great food should be accompanied by great friends, not great big prices.  To taste some of Vancouver’s diverse foods at reasonable rates, head down to the Richmond Night Market.  On now until the end of summer, this ever-growing outdoor marketplace resembles one similar in Hong Kong.  Here, you can dig into a plate of fried rice noodles, nibble on bbq pork skewers and fried prawns, and settle it all with fresh mangoes in ice cream!  All that for under $20, you’d still have a few dollars left over for kick-knacks or souvenirs.  Open Friday-Sunday evenings from 8pm-12am, the main entrance is located at Bridgeport Road and Sweden Way across from the IKEA and there’s no charge for admission.  There’s also a smaller version of this market in Chinatown on Keefer Street that runs during the same time.

If you’re looking for fine fresh groceries,  Chinatown offers plenty of fresh meats, seafood and produce at a fraction of the price of a leading grocery store chain.  The best (and cheapest) products can be found on Keefer, Pender and Main Street. For a filling authentic Chinese meal at a modest price, go to Hon’s Wonton House on Keefer between Main Street and Gore Ave.  Be sure to order their famous Potsticker dumplings at $6 per dozen, they can be an appetizer to share or a meal on its own.  The most expensive  large dishes reaches a staggering $14 but is commonly shared between 2-4 people.

That’s it for this week with Smart $aver Vancouver but be sure to log in again next Thursday where I’ll share with you more ways to save while here in town and another local cheap eats favorite.

Sleep-less in Seattle

So I just came back from a weekend in Seattle and I had an amazing time! I swiped the plastic quite a bit and wracked myself up a nice little bit of debt but it was totally worth it. The shopping in Seattle is well worth the 2 1/2-3 hour drive because there is so much choice for quite a reasonable price. I bought two pairs of gorgeous shoes, some jeans, shorts, and a bunch of tops and definitely got a great deal. For those of you who don’t own a car and might have some difficulties in trying to arrange all the necessary steps towards taking a road trip to the states I think i might have an option for you. One of  our partner companies, West Trek, offers a Budget Shopping/Sightseeing tour in and around Seattle. You have two options:

1) A Budget Shopping Tour which includes; a) round trip school bus transportation, b) 4-5 hours of shopping (duty free too) and c) a friendly Canadian guide

or…2) A Deluxe Shopping or Sightseeing Tour which includes; a) round trip deluxe bus transportation, b) 4-5hrs of shopping with a discounted coupon book or a guided sightseeing tour with discounted attractions

These trips will be offered generally at least one a month so if you are at all interested or would like to find out more information about the trip itinerary itself, prices, etc please do not hesitate to email me at

2010 Vancouver

Wow cannot believe that we are already in the month of February; time just seems to be flying by. So what do we have to look forward to this month? Hmm let’s see…Valentine’s Day, INTERNeX’s weekly PuB NiGHT, the Toronto WinterCity Festival, oh right and the OLYMPICS!! Lol how could I forget that. I have never had the opportunity to live in a city at the same time that it is hosting the Olympics so this really is a first for me, as I’m sure it is for many of you. I’m actually very excited for these two weeks because their seems to be plenty of things to do for everyone, even with a tight student budget like mine. I have actually already bought tickets for Steve Aoki and LMFAO and they were so cheap and I’ve been constantly checking up on websites for free events offered throughout the city. If you are interested in events that are being held in your area, whether it be in Vancouver, Whistler, Richmond, etc check out our event calender or check out this website for information on a number of free events and concerts held all over the city.
