New ‘Kids’ on the Blog

Two new arrivals are to be welcomed this week! Everybody, these two are Conrad and Sandy from the UK!img_4776.jpg

Both of them are taking part in our Practicum program. Conrad will work in a radio station to live out his passion for music and make use of the knowledge he gathered during his studies. Therefore, this placement just seems to be perfect. Conrad never lived abroad before, but no worries, most of us haven’t  and eventually we are here to support each other in this. His plan is to stay in Vancouver for the whole next year.

Sandy just graduated in marketing and now wants to gather some precious work experiences on this side of the globe. During the next month you will find her at the art gallery in New Westminster. Just like Conrad, this is her first time travelling alone and living abroad.

In fact, the main reason for them to come here was to escape the Brexit. I am joking…. of course this wasn’t the MAIN reason… ;-).

As these two already joined us on the Christmas Market this weekend, we already know that they are an amazing addition to our group. Everyone else, make sure you’ll get to greet them at tonights PuB-Night at the Beaver at 7pm.

Can’t wait for tonight.
See you there.

INTERNeX News – Black Friday!

ix-news-logo.pngThe most popular shopping day is just ahead of us – The one and only Black Friday!
And because we want you to be prepared for this, here are some information about the Black Friday itself and a few useful tips you might want to consider before getting yourself into this crazy shopping day!
Black Friday is always the day after the U.S. Thanksgiving, which happens to be the last Thursday in November. It is officially known as the official start of the Christmas season. And because of this, this day has always been very important for sales, even if it wasn’t referred to as ‘Black Friday’ in the first place.
In fact, the day goes all the way back to 24 September in 1869. Two U.S. financiers tried to be so smart and bought a significant amount of U.S. gold, obviously hoping for an overall price soaring, so that they’d be able to sell it again for huge profit. Well long story short, this plan didn’t work out as you might guess. Eventually the U.S. gold market crashed and their actions left the the Wall Street Barons bankrupt. From there the U.S. was set into a really bad financial crisis.
The name ‘Black Friday’ actually came from the way American shops recorded their accounting details, as they’d note profits in black and losses in red. Over this hard time most shops only got to write red number, only after the day of thanksgiving they finally ‘went into black’ again.
If you are currently getting ready to take part in this very crazy shopping experience, here are a few things you might want to consider.
When does it make sense to wait until black Friday itself and when should one of the current deals be taken. Obviously this is always a question of how lucky you’ll be on the day, but if it is a very specific product you are waiting for, in a specific colour or size, you may want to consider buying it before the time. I don’t want to disappoint you in this, but the chances are high that you aren’t the only person waiting for a deal on this product. If you are just waiting for the highest possible discount, you may want to wait until Black Friday.
Before you get yourself out there, getting lost in all the discount signs, you should do some research. Check out RedFlagDeals and RetailMeNot for some brilliant deals, coupons and special offers first. blackfriday.png
Even tho all of  these offers, just seem too good to be true, please don’t forget that we are living in a time of climate change and an absolute consumption overload. And you buying unnecessary stuff  like crazy, is a part of this very big game, even tho if it seems to be just you!
Just think about where these product are coming from, that they need to be produced, and packed and that there is a whole chain reaction after this. I don’t want to be the Party-Pooper in this, but I guess especially our generation has a very good understanding of this and should proof this in actions!
Not to doubt, this is the perfect time to make some great deals, but try not to loose your head over this.
And make sure you’ve got some money left since next PuB-Night isn’t too far away and you still want to be able to pay for your drinks right?
Till then, Happy Shopping you all!
Cheers,

How was your Weekend?

After this weekend I am absolutely ready for Christmas! And I got reminded, that this is truly my favourite time of the year! IMG_4794.JPG

Our weekend started with a very nice trip to the Vancouver Christmas market. And I am not lying, it felt like a very german experience …. at first. All signs were written in german and you heard a lot of german speaking all over the place. I guess it is a “german-thing” after all. So we started to make our way though the market to take a look at all the different houses and things that were waiting to be bought. The little wooden houses, the beautiful decorations and all these beautiful lights almost made it feel like it’s Christmas already. Until the live music started playing. Suddenly we weren’t at a german Christmas market anymore, but on a Mexican summer party. Don’t get me wrong, the music was good, but it seemed like an odd choice to me. After wandering around for a while, dancing to these sounds of summer, we decided on finally getting what a Christmas market is all about – Gluhwein. And you can trust me in this one – it was sooo good! Besides the hot beverages, we also got some food. Even tho it seemed impossible to make the right choice, since there was so much good food around. There was no way I could have only gone for one thing. So if you’ve got any recommendations for my next visit there, please let me know ;-).IMG_4798.JPG
Since it was raining and getting quite cold as the time went by, we decided to change the location for now. So we left the Christmas market to make our way through the city. Two of our newest arrivals joined the group, so we kind of had to show them INTERNeX’ favorite place to be right? Yes and one again we went to the Yale Saloon. We did the Line Dancing, the Bull-riding and one or two drinks! It turned out to be quite a late night.
And I enjoy it so much.Thank you so much for a great night guys. We should definitely do this again!
Luckily Pub-Night isn’t too far away from today! The Beaver is calling already.
Sunday was my chilled day, sleeping in late and starting with some Christmas shopping. Actually now is a perfect time to scout the places where you want to fight for the best deals at the upcoming black Friday!
I hope you all have a great start into the last week of November.
I am already looking forward to Wednesday! See you there.
Cheers,

INTERNeX News

As we already talked about the current strike situation here in Vancouver, the situation could get a bit worse next week. ix-news-logo.png
Just a little information, in case you haven’t read the previous post about it.
The operators are striking for better working conditions, as they are having very hard days at the moment. Schedules are very tight so that there aren’t any bathroom or lunch-breaks. As there was still no agreement achieved so far, job action will be taken from now.
There is a serious possibility that all buses including the SeaBus and Skytrain will go though a complete shutdown starting on Wednesday (27th November). Shutdown as in no public transport will be operated during this period of time!
For now, it seems like the shutdown will last for 3 days. But it might end up being shorter or longer depending on decisions that will be made in that period of time. It may also not happen at all.
Of course we will keep you up to date in this.
Make sure to find alternative ways to get to work and Pub-Night (;-)) for that period of time and keep your eyes and ears open for news.
Cheers,
–Nadja

What to do on the Weekend

TGIF! I cannot believe it’s already weekend again. The weeks are passing by so quickly, or is it just me?
Anyways, we do have one of my personal highlights lined up this weekend. This Saturday it will officially be okay to get ready for Christmas! Therefore we’ll visit the Vancouver Christmas Market this Saturday! To be frank, I haven’t been there before, but I am a huge fan of Christmas an of course Christmas markets .. so I am one-hundred-percent  ready for this. As long as I get some Christmas-music and a hot Gluhwein, I’ll be the happiest person anyways! Plus since, we will only meet at 4pm, this is a very hangover friendly time. So no excuses accepted!Christmasmarketinstared.png
If you already know, that you’ll be joining this fantastic event, please feel free to click on ‘going’ on Facebook, since I would like to know who will show up at the meeting point, so we won’t depart without you! If you are not ready for a big commitment like this, there is also an ‘Interested’ button ;-).

If you just can’t get enough of Christmas, Vancouver won’t let you down on this, for example just next to Vancouver Christmas Market you also find the Vancouver largest indoor Christmas festival, or you may want to drive up to the Capilano Suspension Bridge to see the beautiful lights up there. If you are more of a listening person, you may be interested in the Charlie Brown Christmas Live on Stage Concert, this Sunday in Vogue Theatre on Granville Street.
In case you want to see something different for a change, the Cirque du Soleil Luzia is still in town, which is supposed to be an amazing experience to make. Tickets are about $55 and still available!
I am very happy to see you all tomorrow.
Have a fantastic weekend.
Cheers,

New ‘Kids’ on the Blog

Welcome Simon!

After no new faces in the last week I am happy to introduce you to Simon today. He came all the way from Sweden to take part in the INTERNeX Hospitality program.  So far what I can tell, this young man is ready and excited for all the upcoming adventures ;-). 9caa171b-0899-44dd-8c14-fab3b04c59df.jpg

As for many of us, this is his first time living on his own. So I am sure he’ll be happy to get your tips and tricks on this one. Simon will be placed in Vancouver for his 6 months stay, but of course he doesn’t want to miss out in getting to see some other great destinations too. And again, I think he’d be happy to hear about all of your  experiences and even get inspired by them!
Simon we hope you’ll have a great start here in Vancouver and I promise you, everyone will be very excited to meet you tonight – that’s for sure. There will be many challenges you’ll get the opportunity to grow on, but finding friends doesn’t need to be one of them! We are very happy to take you in our INTERNeX crew! And I think we are quite a nice and fun bunch of people to spend time with. ;-).

Therefore make sure to welcome Simon at tonights Pub-Night at the Moose’s Down Under.
As the weather gets colder and winter is just around the corner, we’ll escape to the warm Australian vibe tonight.
See you tonight ,Mates’!

Cheers,

–Nadja

How was your Weekend?

Time is flying by! How is it already Monday again?
I actually used this weekend to explore Vancouver’s nightlife again. On Friday I went to the Cambie, I had a great time even though we didn’t get to play beer-pong this time. Instead we didn’t leave the dancefloor once ;-).

On Saturday Tom hosted a go-away party! We got to spend some precious time together having a few drinks and pizza! Even though this means, the INTERNeX group will loose a precious member very soon. I hope you had a great time with us Tom and you will be visiting again very soon. We will miss you so much! In case you haven’t attended on Saturday, there is probably another chance to say goodbye at Wednesday’s PuB-Night. Thank you very much for a great night Tom and for being such an important member of our group. And yes of course,  he gets to be mentioned in this blogpost, since he is probably the most loyal reader – it is appreciated :-D. IMG_4727.JPG

On Sunday the INTERNeX crew went out to explore a “part of Canadian history”. We went to the Olympic Experience all the way in Richmond.  The Olympic Experience provides many different simulations of different sports. Since we were almost the only guests around, we were really lucky to get he stuffs full attention. Basically we went skiing, ski-jumping, on a bobsleigh, rowing, car racing and many more on the real olympic tracks.
I have to admit, some of the stuff left me behind with a weird feeling in my tummy :-D. I’d be not very successful at the Olympic games, I guess. IMG_4725.JPG
My personal highlight was actually the hockey game we got to see, right where the magic happened in 2010. And this game turned out to be quite intense. Well at least if you are just used to watching soccer, I guess ;-).

Thanks again for a great weekend guys!

See you this Wednesday at the Moose’s Down Under!

Cheers,

–Nadja
