Rockies Review – Part 1

Starting the week on a Wednesday sounds pretty cool, right? Well, wait till I tell you about my weekend, because that was even cooler than just having a three working-day week.

On Saturday morning, I met 27 of you guys for our four-day trip to the Rocky Mountains. 6.45am seems pretty early, but the time that was lying ahead of us was worth the hustle of getting up so early. The bus took off at 7.30am and our adventure started. We got to know our West Trek tour-guide Hayley and bus-driver Lucien, who made this entire trip so much fun! Thank you to the two of you.

Our first stop was Hope, where we had some fun times at the playground and could 30066245188_6ae9f9a804_njust walk around the picturesque village. Aboard the coach again, we played some games, listened to music and started to get to know each other better. We had lunch in Kamloops and made a short stop at the Spahats Falls. And so, after a 9-hour drive in the bus, we finally arrived at our first night’s stay in Valemount. The evening activity there: Hockey in the Rockies. Teamed up and ready to win, both the “Pride Dragons” and “Tigers” chased the ball to score some goals.

While some of you were still playing, I settled down at the bonfire and enjoyed the last hours of our first day. We had some easy conversations, listened to Hayley playing the Ukulele, sang along to ‘Riptide’ and ‘Country Roads’ and just enjoyed the view of the mountains. At around 1am I decided to get some sleep, because I knew that we had a tight and busy schedule the upcoming days.

On Sunday morning at 7.45am, it was time for us to depart from Valemount. It was a stressful morning and I was quite relieved that I did not have to sing when I boarded the coach (the West Trek rule is that the person coming late has to sing a song for the entire bus). We had our first scenic Rocky Mountains stop at Mt. Robson. It is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies and it gave us the opportunity to have a breakfast with a view. 43887208892_9da7cf5a2b_nAfterwards, we all had the chance to take beautiful pictures with this giant mountain in the background. We boarded the bus again and drove to our next stop: The Athabasca Falls. Even though we had to leave quite soon after we arrived, everyone had the chance to take a stunning picture of and/or with the falls.

But the next stop promised some more breathtaking views: Athabasca Glacier. Already on our way to the icy phenomenon, Hayley taught us about the formation of glaciers and the relation to icefields. From the distance, we could see the Columbia Icefield, which is one of the biggest accumulations of ice south of the arctic. Some of us went up the glacier in a special bus called snowcoach. Personally, I did not join. Some of you just spent the time at the foot of the Glacier with me, having lunch and hiking through the moraine.

After the “Snowcoach-Group” returned, we boarded the bus again and continued the trip to Peyto Lake. Wow, what a beautiful place! The water was turquoise blue and the view was just breathtaking. Another perfect location to take stunning pictures your friends will envy you for. 😉 After this stop, we just had one more task to fulfil: The Polar Bear Swim in Bow Lake!43887208762_52b91d2c09_n The bravest among us got ready to be cooler than they’ve ever been before. Of course, you’ve always been cool, guys – but I think you know what I mean. So, to visualize it: 20 crazy INTERNeX-people running into ice-cold water, screaming at the top of their lungs and cheering with the kicking-in of adrenalin. FUN! Great job to those who did it! I really enjoyed it and can only recommend doing it.

Back in the bus, we were all looking forward to making it to our accommodation for the night in Banff: a cute, beautiful little village. We spent the evening having dinner, shopping souvenirs and getting ready for our night out. And besides celebrating the great group and the new friendships we made, we also had a special anniversary that night: Henrike turned 19! Happy birthday, again. I hope you had an unforgettable night. I walked back to the hotel at around 1am, I did not want to be too tired the next day.

To not overwhelm you with everything, I will tell you about the last two days tomorrow. Make sure you don’t miss out on the blog post!

I hope to see you tonight for PuB NiGHT at the Beaver Bar.

HIGHLIGHTS REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2015: July, August, September

JULY

It’s time for reviewing the third quarter of this year. There was a lot going on here in Vancouver and we organized a lot for our INTERNeX group. Here we gooo:

The very first day in July is a special day here in Canada. It’s Canada’s Birthday6003103020_914fbc43d0_oThis year Canada became 148 years old. In 1867 the British North America Act (today called Constitution Act) united the three colonies Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada into a single federation. The first event of the day, called Waterfront Party, started at Canada Place and was featuring various entertainments like live music, activities for children, street hockey, an armed forces show, a circus show and lots of food carts, as well. Next up was the Canada Day Parade. To finish the day with a bang, there was a firework, which we had a great view of from Canada Place.

15136227569_8fa90356b9_oIn July we had a couple of nice alternatives to our regular Pub NiGHTS. We went to one of Vancouver’s most beautiful places: Queen Elizabeth Park and had a picnic-dinner together with pancakes, fruits, meatballs, salad, … and the list went on! After stuffing ourselves we played ball, chatted and laughed a lot.

We also set up a Scavenger Hunt, which was extremely funny! For a little summary of what we had planned please click here.

Have you ever seen a firework competition? Well, you actually get the chance once a year at Vancouver’s English Bay. 19331623013_dbca09e7b4_oAside from the fireworks competition, called Celebration of Lights, there was a festival at Sunset Beach with various entertainment, vendor stalls and musical showcases.

Mid July we escaped the Vancouver city life for doing a camping trip to
enjoy the great outdoors. Click here to find out more about our camping trip.

AUGUST

August ended with another incredible trip to the Rockies but this time in summer. We just did and experienced so much but let me summarize our itinerary:

Our adventure started outside the Waterfront station early in the morning. We stopped in Hope, Kamloops, Valemount and the Spahats Falls. The next day our journey went on by heading to Banff. On our way we had short rests at Mount Robson, Jasper, Athabasca Falls, the Columbia Icefields and some stunning lakes. rockies conoeThe following day we had a little bit more spare time where we could decide whether we would like going up the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountains or simply exploring Banff before heading to Golden. On the way to Golden we stopped at Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, which are regarded as two of the most famous places in the Rockies. The last day of our amazing tour we traveled back to Vancouver but not without passing Okanagan Valley to see the Last Spike and Othello Tunnels.

You can easily imagine how much fun we had. Not forgetting all the nights we partied so hard so that it was even harder to get up early in the morning. For a more detailed version of our Rockies trip, click here and here.

And for seeing some pictures, among others from our polar bear swim, click here.

The weekend before we had planned a day trip to Victoria. It felt like day of vacation because everything looked quite different compared to Vancouver. No skyscrapers far and wide. Victoria is definitely worth a visit!camping trip
Just as FlyOver Canada. We virtually flew over Canada, from East coast to West coast. It was intense!

A Whistler day trip was also on our to-do list for August. Our first destination took us to Shannon Falls, which is located right before Squamish before heading to our original goal. Arrived in Whistler some of us did zip-lining and the rest checked out the highest and longest lift in the world that took us up to Whistler Mountain from where we took the Peak 2 Peak Gondola to Blackcomb Mountain which connects and Blackcomb Mountain.

SEPTEMBER

After a great trip to the Rockies August came to an end and September started with the traditional Rockies Reunion at Malone’s where our tour guide from WestTrek already had some seats reserved for us. After arriving, we immediately started talking about the trip and how much fun we had. We also spoke with people from the other tour bus and compared experiences. West Trek put together a video of our whole Rocky Mountains trip in just a couple of days. And it was pretty cool to see all the fun things we did over the weekend.

Mid September was a CONCACAF game, which can be compared with Europe’s whitecapsChampions League. The CONCACAF league includes all soccer teams from North and Central America as well as the Caribbean. That means the match between the Vancouver Whitecaps against Olympia from Honduras was quite a big deal. Before we marched together with many other Whitecaps supporters to BC Place we met up with the language school students at Doolin’s Irish Pub.

In the beginning of September we had to say goodbye to our awesome PR Coordinator Natasja. But we will definitely meet again some day!

Because of Labor Da Canada had a long weekend where we took the chance to head down to Richmond to the Extreme Air Park.

HIGHLIGHTS REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2015: April, May, June

APRIL

In our first review post last week we started talking about what was going on in the first three months of the year; let’s have a look what we did in April, May and June!

April started with another new INTERNeX-PR-Coordinator-face who joined the INTERNeX community: PNNatasja, a 23-year-old student from the Netherlands, who came to Vancouver for doing a practicum as part of her Bachelor study program. As a PR Coordinator she was responsible for organizing trips in and outside Vancouver, organizing Pub NiGHTS but also the contact person when a candidate encountered difficulties.

Especially our weekly Pub NiGHTS give our interns the opportunity to meet new people and extend their social network. Pub NiGHTS at Blarney Stone, Marlone’s, The Lamplighter, Steamworks Brew Pub and The Cambie are always popular. Therefore we certainly had to show our new arrivals the ‘hottest’ pubs in town.
MAY

The long weekend in May offered our candidates the perfect opportunity to join the four-day trip to the Rockies. INTERNeX usually goes to the Rockies with West Trek twice a year; once in spring and then later in the year where we experience a part of the Canadian Rockies. rockies5The itinerary is basically the same: we first stopped in Hope, Kamloops, then Valmont, Jasper, Golden and Banff. Among others we visited Mount Robson, the Last Spike, Lake Louise and many other highlights you need to see when you are in the Rockies. To make a long story short we saw tons of gorgeous places and had an amazing time with our tour guide who we called Papa Wolf. To get more information about our Rockies trip, click here for INTERNeX goes Rockies – Part 1 and here for INTERNeX goes Rockies Part 2.

Other than going to the Rockies we also set up Pub NiGHTS every week. For instance we participated in the Trivia Night at Moose Down Under. Surprisingly, we did not know a lot of answers, but I don’t think that affected the fun we had!
JUNE

Vancouver is a very multicultural city therefore it has a lot of cultural diversity to offer. In the middle of June the annual Powel Street Festival, a special Japanese-Canadian festival, was on and exhibited Japanese art, culture and heritage. I know … doesn’t sound that interesting but you get the chance to learn something about the Asian culture in the heart of Vancouver. AND, as you probably already noticed, Vancouver has a huge Asian community that means a lot of people are proud to present a part of their history.celebrationoflight

Additionally one of Vancouver’s largest and most well known festivals called Celebration of Lights, an annual musical fireworks competition with an estimated attendance of 1.4 million people each year, started in June.

The forecast for the last weekend in June promised good weather. And there we go! We had sun, blue sky and around 30°C the entire weekend. That called for a BBQ! second beach BBQ1Everyone brought food, drinks and snacks. Chris brought a volleyball and Laura a Frisbee so we could throw around. Proudly I can say that we enjoyed the summer to the fullest!

Another highlight in June was the appearance of Amiel, a 24-year-old student from Germany in his senior year working on his Bachelor in International Business Administration, who supported Natasja with the different tasks a PR Coordinator has to face. Hey Amiel!

INTERNeX goes Rockies May 2015

Visiting the Rocky Mountains is for almost everyone of our candidates on the top of their to do lists while in Canada. We are therefore very happy to announce the INTERNeX goes Rockies Trip for May 2015. We already created a FB Event Page for you which you can find here:

https://www.facebook.com/events/881856458552296/

On this page we will inform you about everything you need to know. Joining the event will give us an idea how many people are interested in this trip and we encourage you to do so as soon as possible. Please be aware that joining the event on Facebook will not guarantee you a spot, but it will show others who is joining this amazing trip.

Like in previous years we are going with WestTrek Tours, one of our closest partners. If enough people are interested, WestTrek will try their best to get all of our INTERNeX Clients onto the one Bus. This trip is one of the most popular trips and many are usually joining, especially if it is a long weekend like the one in May.

Your Rocky Mountains adventure will begin on the 15th May and you will be back on the 18th May. We expect the price will be around $400 and will update you with the exact price on Facebook. Beside the tickets you should give yourself a budget how much you want to spend in addition while in the Rockies.

We hope many of you will join us for this amazing trip and if you have any questions let us know.

Review of the Year: April, May, June

April

And as the first quarter of the year ended with some anticipation, we could start into the second one with the review of our amazing trip to the Rockies. Watching the beautiful scenery of snowy mountains and lakes really made me think how much one takes Canada for granted sometimes. Another great thing about this trip was the gorgeous weather. We really were a lucky bunch because it was sunshine and blue skies everyday! During this trip we went to so many beautiful places such as Lake Louise, Bow Lake, Emerald Lake, and of course Banff Gondola!

After the legendary Rockies trip, we had to say good bye to yet another friend and intern of our PR department. Flora had been with us for a quarter of a year and for her it was back to being a student for the moment. Yep, that meant textbooks and exams (no more pub nights for her on weekdays…no tequila shots).

However, as most often the case, one beloved face vanishes and another person is right at the threshold. Mercedes started her internship with us in April. She was born in a Spanish city called Vigo, right in the Atlantic Coast, and that’s probably the reason why she loves the sea and the beach so much. She studies Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Vigo and wants to achieve a career in International Relations and Marketing.

Only a few weeks later, Mercedes was joined by Clara. She was from Mérida, a very beautiful city in the Southwestern part of Spain, with a large amount of old Roman monuments and famous for its ham, red wine and other delicious things and the last four years she lived in Madrid. So April really was a month of change…

May

And the new month started off with another new intern as well. We welcomed Jelle into the team, a Dutch student, living close to Amsterdam in a small town called Enkhuizen. For the last 7 years he studied in Amsterdam. The first 4 years graphic design, and in April he studied international tourism management. Because of his studies he likes to travel a lot.

Other than that, we had a public holiday in May, the Victoria Day. Victoria Day (French: Fête de la Reine) is a national Canadian pubic holiday celebrated on the last Monday before May 25, in honor of Queen Victoria’s birthday. Queen Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819 and is still the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. (During her life, the British Empire expanded substantially). The monarch’s birthday has been celebrated in Canada since before the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign. After her death, on January 1901, May 25 became “Empire Day”, and for many reasons the Monday before the 25th became Victoria’s Day! In some cities, fireworks are displayed or parades are held to mark Victoria Day. One of the most notable parades is held in the capital of British Columbia; Victoria, which was named because of the Queen Victoria!

June

June, the last part of the second quarter, started of summer and to get in the mood, we decided to announce another Rockies trip for August. What better way to start of this season than with anticipation for this great adventure…
