HOW WAS YOUR WEEKEND?

Belated Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! Last Friday we had a Thanksgiving Dinner at the revolving restaurant on Robson Street.
I know I already told you about that in my previous blog
post but I would like to tell you more about this awesome night we passed above Vancouver’s roofs. Especially the view was just gorgeous. During the Dinner the restaurant revolved, as its name already implies. So we had a 360-degree-view on several “sights” such as the Lions Gate Bridge, North Vancouver, the Pacific and Stanley Park. Regarding this holiday we had a 3-course-menu with traditional roasted turkey and stuffing. After the Dinner some us went to Steamworks to have some drinks.

As I also mentioned in my last blog post I went to Victoria this passed weekend. We had an amazing time there and a trip from Vancouver to Victoria is definitely worth it! Compared to Vancouver, Victoria is more like a village than a city but that’s why it’s so beautiful. In my opinion our whale watching tour was the best part about the trip. Yes right, we were whale watching and it was just awesome!
Moreover it was not that expensive than we would have expected. Luckily we saw many whales and a lot of seals. Even three of the whales dived under our boat. It was an unlikely feeling because actually the boat must observe a certain safety distance. Probably this safety distance is more for the whales than for the humans but however I had a bad feeling in this moment. At the beginning I thought it’s a kind of boring, that we wouldn’t see any whales and that it wouldn’t be worth it but instead I’m so glad we did it. We also went to Fisherman’s Wharf to feed the seals there. They are so cute! You can buy some fish for them at the small stalls and they aren’t shy quite the contrary they steal the fish out of your hands.

INTERNeX Canada: Thanksgiving special

 “A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed – to be observed on the 2nd Monday in October”. (January 31, 1957, Parliament of Canada)

Canadian Thanksgiving, one of the most famous holidays and not to be confused with the U.S. American version is celebrated at the second Monday in October. It is similar to the English and European Harvest festival, symbolizing people’s gratitude for everything given by nature or God that sustains them.

While the actual Thanksgiving holiday is on a Monday, Canadians may gather for their Thanksgiving feast on any day during the long weekend. Thanksgiving in Canada is also often a time for weekend getaways.

The traditional dish for the Thanksgiving dinner is roasted turkey, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. Watching football on TV is also a part of the modern tradition for many Canadians.

Becoming a statutory (public) holiday in 1957, Thanksgiving goes back much further than that. Besides being linked to the before mentioned European traditions, it is also a way to remember the English explorer Martin Frobisher and his search for the Northwest Passage in 1578. As it was common in those times, his journey was a difficult one; made hard and exhausting by severe weather and ice. So when Frobisher and his crew arrived in Frobisher’s Bay, they celebrated the first ceremonial Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving being a public holiday means that all government institutions are closed and also most liquor stores. Most other stores are open, though. And if you want to visit some of Vancouver’s attractions, you can check out here, which of them will be open today.

INTERNeX Canada: Thanksgiving

As already mentioned, October is the month of Canadian Thanksgiving. Right, different than in the U.S., but still a time to be thankful for all our loved ones, for a bit of free time, for all the luxury goods we are able to enjoy and last but not least,: For all the good and maybe unusual food.

This years Thanksgiving is on Monday October 14th, so it will be a long weekend to enjoy the fall weather. Many of you might have the possibility to join you homestay family for this special day. However, a few of you might not be quite as lucky. That is why INTERNeX will offer a Thanksgiving dinner for you!

Downtown Vancouver is The Irish Heather. They have a project called the Long Table Series. And this is what we are going to try out. Either on Sunday the 13th or directly on Monday the 14th of October, we will go there as a group, sit together at a really long table with other people and have a nice dinner. It is a very social spirit, to come together to a meal with strangers and spend a lovely evening socializing. It is the Thanksgiving spirit.

Right now, you still have the possibility to chose, whether you would rather go on Sunday or on Monday. Just message Annika via Facebook and give a vote concerning which day suits you best. According to that, we will make reservations and let you all know. Please think about it, check out the website of the PUB to get an idea, which dinner is more of your taste and get back to me as quick as possible.
