INTERNeX Canada: How was your weekend? – Vancouver Giants Hockey Game

How are you doing this rainy Vancouver Monday? I’ll be honest, this weather and all the shenanigans from the weekend is making me feel kind of tired and worn out.

Though, this weekend was another story.

We celebrated a birthday Saturday night and when you put the words “INTERNex-ers” and “party” together, things tend to get a little crazy! Nevertheless, most of us recovered made it to the Vancouver Giants vs. Saskatoon Blades hockey game on Sunday afternoon.

Hockey is the epitome of Canadian culture so we were quite curious to see what the excitement is all about.  With the NHL lockout not ending any time soon, we attended a Western Hockey League (WHL) which is the major junior hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States.

A total of 31 INTERNeX-ers came to cheer on the Giants! While the home team scored 2 goals in the first period, they fell short and lost 5-2 to the Blades. The outcome is not that important because you can tell the players worked really hard and gave their best. There is so much action in hockey: hits, shots on goals and fights were fought. It’s hard to put aside your emotions when you get really into the game.

Other than the hockey game itself, we were entertained by the cheerleaders, prizes constantly being given out and inflatable thunder sticks for us to make noise. What I found really fun was the “wave” which is when everyone raises their arms to create a wave like crest that slowly goes across the different sections of the arena.

Hockey is a very fast and intense game, but definitely a sport that is very entertaining to watch and be a part of!

Let’s hang out again this Wednesday at the Pub Night and at Laser Tag on Sunday, shall we?

Video Of The Week — WE ARE ALL CANUCKS!

It’s time for the video of the week and since we built up the tradition to show solely clips about the Canucks, the Stanley Cup, Vancouver and funny cover songs related to it, we want to stick to it for one last time…

 Today, on a sunny Wednesday, June 15, the Vancouver Canucks will win the Stanley Cup 2011 for the first time in NHL history!

Why? Because they have the most awesome fans in the world! And of course because it’s a home match 😉 Next to that…They ROCK! It will be a nerve-wracking 7^th and last match of the final! Everybody in the INTERNeX office is soooo excited about it!

So let’s cheer for our team from wherever you are, as loud as you can with all the positive energy that you have so the Canucks can hear every fan from every corner in Canada in the Rogers Arena!!

Let’s make them bring the gigantic trophy home on a wave of energetic, overwhelming fan love!

Even if you are not from Canada, just as me, remember that as long as you are here: WE ARE ALL CANUCKS! 😀

Illuminate Yaletown / Olympic Winter Games Anniversary Events – Review

Last weekend was fully packed with great events! Nooo….not only the phenomenal INTERNeX Karaoke Night on Saturday Night! 😉

On Friday, Vancouver got warmed up for an exciting weekend by Illuminate Yaletown. Taking place on two nights, Hamilton and Mainland Street were illuminated by unique art installations. Building frontages were shining in all colours imaginable, artists performed fanciful shows in front of ice sculptures and so on… I went to this event and although it was raining heavily, I was immediately caught by this mystic atmosphere that the combinations of light, sculptures and animations were creating.

Saturday was fully packed with events all around the 1^st Anniversary of the Olympic Winter Games.

And because it is an event that most of us, may it be intern or candidate, will probably not experience a second time, I grabbed my umbrella, took the Skytrain to downtown and was truly surprised about how many people were actually going to the events, although it was such bad weather.

 

A part of Granville Street was cordoned off and artists were performing shows, one could play street hockey, hold an Olympic torch and even meet the athletes! That was really cool! The best moment of the day was probably the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at Jack Poole Plaza at 4pm. Luckily, I was on time and got one of the best spots! More and more people pilgrimage to the plaza, a lot of them wearing the famous blue jackets. As we were all waiting, suddenly somebody started to sing the national anthem of Canada and one after another, everybody was joining until the whole place was filled with the sweet sound of “Oh Canada!”. It did not happen only once but 3 or 4 times that the anthem resounded by the Canadians around me. It gave me a really good feeling since among all the locals, I (the German girl from far far away) felt like one of them…

Finally, at 4.30pm, one of the officials entered the Plaza, followed by a big group of former volunteers. He held a short speech and then…. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3…2…1…..BAM! The cauldron got ignited and thousands of people were going crazy! Everybody was cheering, singing, dancing!

It is hard to describe this moment, therefore I filmed it! 😉 Check I out if you missed out on Saturday.

INTERNeX PuB NiGHT @ The Cambie!

Oh yes, it’s time for another INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! This time, we’re heading over the Cambie Bar in Gastown!

The Cambie bar is part of the Cambie Hostel, which all began in 1887, when a new saloon on the bustling Cordova Street quickly established itself as a happening social centre for locals and travelers alike. When the Prohibition of the 1920’s was in full swing, bootleggers floated their forbidden wares through False Creek and delivered them straight to the Cambie storeroom through an extensive network of underground tunnels. The General Store & Bakery adjacent to the pub saw its share of excitement too, as a boxing ring where five cents would buy you hours of ringside entertainment. Although the hotel got a major facelift in 1997 to camouflage a century of drunken debauchery, the spirit of excitement and fun is still very much alive.

So join INTERNeX at the Cambie on Wednesday, July 7 at 300 Cambie Street in Gastown! 8 p.m. is our usual meeting time, so come around then! This time we’ll have a little trivia quiz so we can dish out some prizes. Make sure to be on time or miss out on some good stuff!

Toronto Dragon Boat Festival

The Event – Team Spirit At Its Very Best

The 22nd TELUS Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival promises a two-day fun-filled event that brings sports, team spirit and community spirit to Toronto Centre Island on June 19-20, 2010.

The Festival, which started in 1989, entered the international arena in 1993. From the humble beginning of only 27 teams participating in the first festival back in 1989, it has evolved to a much bigger operation over the past two decades.

Organized by the Toronto Chinese Business Association and the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, the Festival in 2010 will once again expect 180 to 200 teams with 5,000 athletes. Paddlers of different backgrounds from all over the world will take part in the ancient Chinese tradition and friendly competition.

In 2009, the Festival registered 8 teams of youth with physical and developmental challenges. The Festival was also graced by the cancer survivor terms from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Ontario Region, fundraising beneficiary of the Festival. After all, it’s not always about winning the cup. The team spirit, the message of hope and inclusiveness prevails throughout the Festival!

Once again this year, the Festival will welcome teams from all provinces across Canada, from the U.S., the Caribbean Islands, Europe and Asia.

In 2010, as the Festival celebrates its 22nd year, it promises to continue to be one of the most exciting summer events in Canada. It will juxtapose culture, water sport, exotic food with multi-cultural performances. In 2009, attendance at the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival reached the 120,000 mark to make it one of the most popular summer festivals in Toronto.

Furthermore, the Festival values social responsibilities and has in the past raised funds for charities such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Breast Cancer Foundation and the SickKids Foundation.

Today, dragon boat racing is held globally. It is now an annual event held in over 40 countries. All around the world, far and wide, people have embraced this water sport and formed dragon boat racing clubs in their own countries.

The two most established Dragon Boat Race Festivals in Canada – Toronto and Vancouver – spearheaded the Dragon Boat Council of Canada, the national dragon boat organizing body in Canada. The mission of the Council is to work together to develop criteria and processes to select national dragon boat champions to represent Canada in International and World Championships.
