Client Testimonial

Anne, Norway

When I finished my studies in Norway I felt an eager to go abroad to get some international experience and to have a good time as well. I started to look online to see what kind of opportunities that existed and I found out that INTERNeX offered different programs for work and travel. I chose to go to Canada mainly because I wanted to practice my English and because I’ve had heard so many good things about the country. And now I can confirm that it’s all true! The landscape is stunning, the people are nice, there are big cities full of entertainment and in my opinion the weather is great too. Basically Canada offers everything you can think of.

INTERNeX sat me up with a job interview before I left Norway so I was sure to have a job when I came over. My adventure started off in Rocky Mountains where I worked at a mountain resort. During my time there I got to see wonderful nature and magical views when I was hiking. It was also a lot of other fun things to do including mountain biking, horseback riding, white water rafting and canoeing.
The resort I was working at was close to Calgary so I went there for a long weekend as well. Of course I had to see the Calgary Tower with view over the whole city while I was there. I also got to see real cowboys and do some serious shopping after not seeing a mall in months!
After the summer season was over I decided to move to Vancouver and now I live in an apartment in beautiful Yaletown. I work in a coffee shop down town as well so that fits me perfectly. When I’m not at work trying to make magnificent latté art, I like to go for a run in my neighbourhood next to False Creek passing by Science World, Rogers Stadium and BC Place Stadium. It’s so nice early in the morning when the sun is reflecting in the water.

Because I live down town I’m spending a lot of time there and one of my favourite things to do is to walk up and down Robson Street. That street offers everything a girl wish for including Victoria’s Secret, delightful chocolate stores and many good clothing stores. Beside that I’ve so far been to Stanley Park, China Town, Vancouver Public Library and Canada Place which is also down town.

But the best thing about Vancouver is that you have the nature so close to the city. I have been in North Vancouver a couple of times and I spent one day in Lynn Canyon Park and saw the Twin Falls, Rice Lake and walking over the suspension bridge. I have also been hiking up Grouse Mountain which is famous for its ravishing view over Vancouver, but I went there on a cloudy day, so the only thing I could see from the top was clouds, but that was pretty cool to see too and I had a great time hiking with my friends.
All my time in Canada has been amazing and I would strongly recommend a trip like this to everyone that’s considering going. Thanks to INTERNeX everything has gone smoothly for me and they have helped me with many practical things and arranging fun events where I’ve made many new friends. All that’s left for me to say is I’m having the time of my life and I will always think of this adventure with a smile on my mouth.

Cheers Anne 🙂

INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday

Hallo y’all

Today’s Casual Friday post is going to be about two people. Germans and Canadians. You wonder how I thought of this? Well, me being a German staying in Canada right now, well what do you think? Ok, no seriously… Being in Vancouver for about three weeks now, I met a few new people already. And guess what, at the moment most of our participants are German. Surprise surprise… Every time I go abroad, I feel like at least every second person I meet is from Germany as well. You kind of get the feeling that Germany itself must be somewhat deserted by now… or as I like to say, you cannot escape us 🙂

With a lot of us travelling, our customs travel as well. You all know, that the most frequent assumptions about Germans are that we are basically all Bavarians, that we love love love our beer and that we eat a lot of Bratwurst. Thinking about all this, I actually found out a few funny things: If you really want to eat a Bratwurst in Vancouver, you do not need a rustic traditional German restaurant. No, you can just go to Chinatown and eat at Bestie’s!  It has, as advertised, ‘Chinatowns finest Currywurst’!!! And if you thought we love our beer, well – think again. Because obviously some Canadians love it even more. You wonder how I figure this? Well, they even brew a special beer for their dogs! Check out this article I found and you’ll see that Germans have to kick it up a nudge to keep up with this.

So what about us trying to be a little more like Canadians for a change? I saw this YouTube video the other day and found that actually quite fitting. So take this as an instruction to blend a bit more in with the natives 🙂

I would say: Challenge accepted!  I expect to see a few more Canadians at the next PuB NiGHT.

Best,

Annika

INTERNeX Canada: Trip to Victoria

Hello everybody,

today’s post will hopefully put y’all in the mood for our big Victoria trip in the end of this month. Thinking that a few of you still may not be sure whether to sign up and come with us, I will give you a little overview of what you would be missing out on. And for all who already decided to join us: That’s where you will be going 🙂

Victoria – also called the “City of Gardens” or the “City of the Summer Asian Invasion” –  is the capital of British Columbia and located on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, right off Canada’s Pacific coast. Its name itself is a tribute to the British Queen Victoria and it is one of the oldest cities in the Pacific North West. Therefore, the town is still defined by many historic buildings, as for example the British Columbia Parliament Building. These are located at the Inner Harbor and a ‘Must See’ for every tourist.

And of course, like more or less every other bigger American city, one of Victoria’s neighborhoods is Chinatown. However, the interesting thing about this part of town is: It is the second oldest Chinatown in North America after the one in San Francisco!

Besides these two details, we are planning to visit the Royal British Columbia Museum also located downtown. The museum includes three permanent galleries: modern history, natural history, and local First Nations’ history. It is supposed to be one of the most interesting educational places one can visit in B.C. So let’s find out.

Another highlight of the trip will be our tour to the Craigdarroch Castle. A Victorian-era Scottish Baronial mansion built in the late 1800s. Originally, it was constructed for a wealthy coal baron and the mansion has over 30 rooms, which are known for their luxurious design and furniture.

Last but not least, I want to mention Beacon Hill Park. The park itself is for recreational purposes and offers some beautiful shoreline trails, as well as the “Mile 0” of the famous Trans-Canada Highway. Also, as a little bird told us, if you know where it is THE of best place in town to get ice cream. And guess what? We know where! So imagine yourself strolling around, enjoying your ice cream, watching out at the Ocean… Still not wanna come with us??? Come on, give yourself a start. You can still register (and pay) at tomorrow’s PuB NiGHT or until the 20th at the INTERNeX office. We are waiting for you!

Best,

Annika
