How was your weekend?

Yes, I’ve been broken-hearted…  Blue since the day we parted… Why, why did I ever let you go? Mamma mia, now I really know, my, my, I should not have let you go. Those words pop into my head when I think about the weekend. It was a long and fun one, so before we head back to work, I will tell you all about it.

My weekend started Thursday evening. The day was finally there: ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ was released in the Canadian cinemas! Officially, its release date was July 20th, but we were lucky enough to watch it a day earlier. My opinion on the movie? Well, let’s say I would be up for rewatching it. More than once. If you loved the original, I think you will definitely love the sequel too. I laughed a lot and even shed some tears. Yes, I completely immersed myself in the movie. After a fun evening filled with ABBA songs and popcorn, it was time to go home.

Victoria July 2018On Friday, I had another fun day ahead of me. I went to Victoria! Antonia and I took the ferry to Swartz Bay and from there; we took the bus to downtown. Once we arrived, there was one word that described the city perfectly: cute. We spent the day strolling around the city. We saw the BC Parliament Buildings, Fisherman’s Wharf, the beautiful coastline and many cute shops. Taking the ferry and bus for a couple of hours was definitely worth it.

28708528597_2ef377d88c_nSaturday, it was time for our INTERNeX event: Deep Cove. We went on a nice hike in the forest and had lunch with a view when we arrived at Quarry Rock. Since the weather was amazing, we relaxed at the beach for a while when we finished the hike. After that, we got ourselves some delicious ice cream and headed back to Vancouver. When I arrived at home, I took a shower, made dinner and then it was time to leave the house again. This time, the destination was the Bourbon in Gastown. I spent the evening dancing and playing beer pong and giant Jenga with some of you.

After walking a total of 30 kilometers during the weekend, I decided to take it easy on Sunday. I spent the day reading a book in my backyard and watching YouTube/Netflix. I hope your weekend was just as great as mine was!

See you on Wednesday for our PuB NiGHT at 131 Water!

Smart Saver Vancouver

Summer has arrived, so it is time to go outside and do some fun activities. Good news is that you don’t have to spend (too much) money to join the fun. Here are some ideas for your free time.

I am sure you have already heard about the famous outdoor cinema, which takes place every Tuesday at Second Beach in Stanley Park. We just went there yesterday and watched The Lion King, it was a lot of fun! Next week, Mean Girls is on the program. Just take a blanket and some snacks with you and enjoy the movie.

37298454_1806962999396722_1371304262142787584_nDo you always have plans on Tuesday nights? No problem, you can also watch an outdoor movie on Thursdays at the Waterfront Cinema at Canada Place. Movies are shown until the end of August. Tomorrow, from 9.10pm on, the movie COCO will be on the screen. You can find the entire movie line-up here. Make sure you arrive early to reserve yourself a good spot.

Another great activity for hot summer days is of course swimming or at least splashing. You can cool down in one of the five outdoor swimming pools that are spread over the city:

  • Kitsilano Pool
  • Maple Groove Pool (South Vancouver)
  • Hillcrest Aquatic Centre (close to Queen Elisabeth Park)
  • New Brighton Pool
  • Second Beach Pool (Stanley Park)

You can check out all location details and opening hours here. Admission fee for one visit is $6.10, except for Maple Grove Pool – only $3 for this one. If you are planning to go more often, you can also purchase a 10-visit pass for $48.80. You get 25% off the regular price, when you show up with a group of 10+ people. So, time to gather your friends and save some money!

14583004328_d24ee0c590_nWhy spend the evening in the gym when you can also work out in the fresh air? Just dance the night away during free Zumba classes. Canada Place is again the place-to-be for this activity. The one-hour classes take place every Monday until August 27 and start at 5.30pm. And no worries – you don’t have to be a dance pro. Everyone is welcome to join the fun workout with a view.

Next to Zumba, you can also enjoy free Yoga classes. Mat Collective Yoga offers outdoor classes at diverse great locations in Vancouver. You can either join a class downtown in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, in East Van, at Kits Beach or even on Granville Island. Different kinds of classes are offered every day until the end of August. So you could even go daily without even spending a loonie. Check out the live schedule here. Keep in mind that you need to sign a waiver before you join a class. However, you don’t need to sign up, just get in your sport clothes and take part in the class at unique locations!

I hope I could help you save some money! See you tonight at The Relish – where you get a beer for $3, by the way ;-).

What to do on the weekend?

Before I tell you about any potential plans for the weekend, I would like to share the best news with you: WE HAVE A THREE-DAY-WEEKEND AHEAD! 🎉 Since Canada Day is on a Sunday this year, the Canadians decided to have the Monday off. Isn’t that amazing? 😀 So, I now have to cover three days of free time. 7510330800_fdb23aed9e_n

Starting off with Saturday:
Just looking at the forecast, this seems to be quite a grey day. But nevertheless, fun activities can definitely be found in Vancouver. Did you think about going to the cinema? There are a lot of good movies to watch right now:

• Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Science Fiction/Action/Adventure)
• The Incredibles 2 (Superhero Fiction/Adventure/Comedy)
• Deadpool 2 (Fantasy/Science Fiction/Superhero/Action)
• I Feel Pretty (Comedy)
• Despicable Me 3 (Science Fiction/Adventure/Comedy)
• Darken (Fantasy/Science Fiction)
• Overboard (Romance/Comedy)
• The First Purge (Fantasy/Crime/Science Fiction/Horror)

You don’t feel like going to the cinema and want some action for yourself instead? What about Go-Karting? Speed along the race course and compete against your friends. The indoor place can be found here and has a lot more fun games to offer besides go-karting. In case you want to get even more active, you could head to a climbing gym and get your adrenaline pumping while reaching the top. In The Hive you can get to your limit – no matter if you are a newbie, expert or somewhere in between.

Sunday:
I do not have to tell you what to do on this precious day! Each and every year, since 1917, we celebrate the Birth of Canada in 1867. 🇨🇦️ This year it’s the 151th birthday and all of you should participate. There is a lot to celebrate: Aren’t you happy to be here? Aren’t you pleased by this beautiful country? Aren’t you embracing the easy, yet exciting lifestyle over here? I bet you are. But where to celebrate it best? The biggest celebration will take place at Canada Place. 🎆 But you will find smaller events on Granville Island, in Burnaby, in Surrey and basically all over Vancouver.

Monday:
8262151914_5eea36c8ea_nIt’s the last day of the weekend already and I’d advise you to take it slow and relax a little. Fortunately, not everyone is as lazy as I am, so for those active among you, here are some tips for the perfect ending of the long weekend: How about some more action at a Paintball combat with your friends? Grab them and head out to North Vancouver where you can get another adrenaline-kick. If you want the rather “light” version, you can play Archery Tag in Richmond. You won’t get hurt, but it’s the same amount of fun!

Have the greatest weekend, guys. I’m looking forward to seeing you on Sunday for the Canada Day celebration at Canada Place!

How was your weekend?

Although it has been a slightly cold weekend, I had a lot of fun. Let me tell you all about it!

Cinema June 1st 2018On Friday, I left the office at 6pm, as usual. This time, I did not take the bus home right away. Instead, Kerstin, Nadine, Nadja and I went out for sushi at a place called ‘Momo Sushi’. Unexpectedly, our sushi was served within approximately 10 minutes after the waitress took our order. It is safe to say that the service was amazing. Just like our sushi. Our favourite: the avocado roll. And personally, I love the yam and vegetable tempura as well. The plan was to go to the cinema after dinner, however, the movie did not start until 9:35pm, so we decided to play Rummikub at 131 Water for a while. A few rounds of losing later, it was time to watch ‘I Feel Pretty’ at the cinema. A hilarious feel-good movie with an amazing message. I definitely recommend watching it. At 11:30pm, the movie ended and it was time to head home.

41842966624_2de5485e03_nI did not do anything special on Saturday, so let’s move on to my Sunday. On this day, I spent my morning sleeping in for the first time in weeks. When I was ready to say goodbye to my bed, I FaceTimed with one of my Dutch friends for a few hours. At 3.15pm, it was time to leave the house and go to the Extreme Air Park. Time for this week’s INTERNeX event! We spent the early evening jumping from trampoline to trampoline, playing dodgeball and basketball and jumping into foam pits. We even got to wear special glow-in-the-dark socks. I wouldn’t call it fashion, but they ensured our safety and whenever the lights went off, the socks were the only clothing items that remained visible. We jumped around for an hour and since we were all very sweaty, it was time to go home and have a shower. I spent the rest of the evening watching a movie and then it was time to call it a night.

I hope you all had a great weekend! See you on Wednesday at The Relish for PuB NiGHT!

How was your weekend?

Wake up at 7:30am, check. Have a shower, check. Make breakfast, check. Get ready to go to work, check. As hard as it is to say goodbye to the weekend, we wouldn’t be enjoying weekends if Mondays didn’t exist. So let’s appreciate Mondays for once. But before we do that, let me tell you about my weekend!

40145500675_81bf2c797c_n

As the weather forecast predicted, Friday consisted of rain, rain and, wait for it… rain. Therefore, some of us decided to stay in and watch the newly released movie Love, Simon, at the cinema (definitely a must-see!). If you haven’t been to the cinema here yet, I recommend you to do so because it’s an experience before the movie even started! When buying a drink, you can choose between the normal version, zero-sugar, light, lemon/lime/cherry etc. And if that wasn’t exciting enough for you, wait till you sit down on your seat and discover that you can lean back! As you might guess, I had a great night!

40328178154_ca8bcd91bd_n

On Saturday I went to explore the city a little more with a friend I met at the hostel I used to stay at. Considering the weather wasn’t fantastic, we decided to turn it into a shopping day! So I can’t complain, really. Besides that I watched a livestream of the March For Our Lives, a march that took place in Washington (and all over the world), where over a million people fought for gun control in the US.

Since Sundays are meant for relaxing and taking a break from the busy work week, I decided to take the ferry to Granville Island. And guess what, it was SUNNY. The forecast made us think we would have to stay inside watching Netflix all weekend, but thankfully Vancouver decided to surprise us. I strolled down the public market where I could find the most delicious food. We also had free entertainment! There was live music and a busker who juggled with machetes. . I’d like to add: don’t try this at home!

I hope you all had a great weekend despite the rainy weather!

See you all at Malone’s for PuB NiGHT!

What to do in the weekend?

Oh look, it’s already Friday again. This means that two days of not doing much are ahead of us. Wait, not doing much? No way! I’m more than just sure that Vancouver has a lot to offer this weekend, so let’s check it out.

24801690495_6902a10531_nAs we all know, the Chinese New Year started just a week ago. And because of this celebration, you have the chance to experience the Chinese Lantern Festival. Today, tomorrow and on Sunday (and even next weekend), you can go from 5pm to 10pm to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden at Carrall Street and be fascinated by the colourful lanterns. Besides this, you can participate in fun activities or you can enjoy delicious food. This fun requires only an entrance fee of $15.

On Saturday morning at 11am, you can go to your local Cineplex to see the Family Favourites film. Every week, it is another movie and this week it is ‘Wonder’. And because it is the Family Favourite film, the ticket price is 2.99$ only, yay!

Oh and people, this is your last chance to ice skate on the outdoor rink at Robson Square during the weekend! The skating rink is closing on February 28. So, grab your skates or take $5 cash with you (for rental skates) and do some rounds on the ice! You can do so today and tomorrow from 9am until 11pm and on Sunday from 9am until 9pm.

If all those suggestions aren’t that appealing to you, then you’re lucky that the weather is going to be good this weekend. The sun is going to shine and this give you the opportunity to walk through Vancouver downtown or to visit one of the many parks. Time to take some beautiful photos to update your Instagram or Facebook page.

Have a great and exciting weekend!

HOW WAS YOUR WEEKEND? + FlyOver CANADA REVIEW

Yesterday we went to the pretty popular FlyOver Canada to enjoin “The Ultimate Flying Ride” across the most gorgeous places Canada has to offer.DSC00708 It was quite an amazing experience and everyone was excited!

Luckily it wasn’t raining since we met up outside at Canada Place there where you can buy the tickets. During the short time we waited for everyone to arrive we could see a lot of seaplanes landing on the water near Canada Place. Lisa, one of our interns, told us about her awesome experience flying with one of those seaplanes. Accidentally we met another intern with his girlfriend. They also planned to go to the FlyOver Canada and so they summarily decided to join us. We were a group of 8 people that heade down to the entrance of FlyOver Canada. Surprisingly there was no line up and we quickly could enter the room where you get introduced in special personal views of Canada. You got so many different impressions and actually you didn’t even know where to look at but I definitely mean it in a positive way though.FullSizeRender I guess everyone who already did the FlyOver Canada knows what I am talking about. After that kind of introduction we finally got seated in the chairs, the floor underneath the chairs was being rolled back and we could see the full size of the giant screen: We were ready to take off.

To make that experience even more realistic the chairs were moving around, a bit of wind and water was blown into our faces, and of course we could also hear the sound of the helicopter. We truly believe that this was just amazing and they really did a great job shooting all these gorgeous locations and putting together such a memorable fly.

This experience can definitively be recommended to those of you who couldn’t join yesterday. Bring a couple of friends, and for sure you won’t get bored.

After that great event we could watch how a huge cruise liner left the harbour. Since it was already quite cold yesterday evening we decided to go for having a hot chocolate/coffee at Tim Hortons at the Pacific Center. We sat there till the security staff asked us to leave considering that they wanted to finish work.

Besides that, a friend and I went to the cinema but not for seeing the new James Bond movie, as I suggested in my last post, but rather for seeing “The intern” which was a pretty funny movie. At the beginning I was a kind of afraid of not understanding what the movie is about or what they are talking about. Therefore I was even more proud of myself that I was able to understand nearly everything. Next time I really have to see “Spectre”, maybe some of you guys would like to join me?
