How was the weekend?

As you might have noticed, there were a lot of people in costumes around Downtown this weekend and you wonder, why? Simple, the Canada Sevens (Rugby) took place in Vancouver this weekend. A game lasts two halves of 7 minutes and each team has 7 players on the field (hence the name). It’s very fast, intense and a lot of fun to watch with many entertainment sections in-between the games. INTERNeX went to check it out and although we weren’t experts in the sport we had a lot of fun. One reason might’ve been the drinks we had beforehand. 😀 Some of the girls also enjoyed watching the sidelines where the players warmed up more than the actual game, if you know what I’m talking about. 😉 I really liked dressing up, having the stadium experience and feel connected with the rest of the audience when we were cheering for the Canadians in the last game of the night. Have you ever been to a Rugby game? Would you go?

Saturday some of the girls met up for a movie night! Can you guess what movie? 😉 We went to see Magic Mike – The Last Dance and from what I could see we all enjoyed it. ;D Before the movie started we equipped ourselves with some fresh, warm, buttered popcorn and drinks from Starbucks. I was surprised to see one in the movie theatre but I gotta say I love it! Call me weird, but I think it’s a genius combination – having a hot coffee at the movies with your popcorn, especially because popcorn here is salty, so the sweet drink balances the flavours out perfectly. Another exciting event I attended this weekend was the BC Bike Show that – to my surprise – also had lots of booths about travel and adventure activities all over the globe, but mainly in BC, or the West of North America. It gave me some cool inspirations for some INTERNeX events in the future so stay tuned. 😉 Not only professionally, but also personally it was an awesome event with lots of discounts, for example for a diving course, and chances to win great prizes, big and small. My favourite was a bear bell that I won by spinning a wheel. It makes it safer to go on hikes in the summer warning bears that humans are around, so they keep their distance. 🙂 I also tried out sitting in a paraglider. They almost got me to attend a class even though I’m afraid of heights and you can only operate it by yourself, so you need a lot of trust. 😀 The thought of gliding in the air is very tempting though, plus it would be a great challenge to overcome a fear! How about you, would you do it?

What to do on the weekend?

Even though I’m not the biggest sports fan I’m quite excited for this event! INTERNeX is going to watch the Canada Sevens today! For all of those who don’t know, I’m talking about Rugby. It’s a major sports event but more than that it’s also a big party where people dress up and celebrate all day long. That’s really the part I’m looking forward to. 😉 Friday the tickets are much cheaper than the rest of the weekend which makes it the perfect day to go for a broke international student. If you can’t go with us on Friday, or are more interested in the big final on Sunday there’s still a chance for you to order tickets online. If you need a costume, just let us know and we’ll find something for you. 😉 Either way don’t be surprised if you see weirdly dressed people on the Skytrain or around Downtown this weekend. 😀

If you’re looking for something more cultural to do, I have the perfect event for you: The 16th Annual Coastal Dance Festival in New Westminster. Use the day to go for a walk, explore this area of Metro Vancouver and finish at the festival. Want to travel around Canada, but have no money? No problem! Why don’t you try ‘FlyOver Canada’? With advanced technology to showcase thrilling captures and authentic footage of real locations, you’ll experience those places as they truly are. On top of that special effects like wind, mist and scents make it seem even more realistic. There’s flight motion seats, the floor will disappear underneath you, so your feet are hanging in the air and the wraparound screen gives you amazing views wherever you look. I did it once and thought it was absolutely crazy! I enjoyed it a lot despite the weird feeling it gave me for like 30 seconds because I’m very sensitive to motion sickness. 😀 The ride is relatively short but definitely a cool experience and a great way to explore Canada without actually leaving Vancouver. 😉 The cost is affordable with about $35. At the moment they also offer ‘Hawaii from above’, in case you’re sick of this rainy weather and would like to escape for just a moment. 🙂

Halloween-Party Review

Weeks of preparation have come to an end! The big night was finally here, all these hours of costume shopping and watching of make-up tutorials truly paid off. We looked stunning, guys! And I just want to make a big shout out to the Blarney Stone. Decorations, drinks, food and the party vibe were on point!

As our night started, we first got some food to be prepared for everything else happening afterwards. Apparently the Poutine is one of the best you can get in town and as we all know definitely a must try! Alongside the food and drinks, everybody was chatting and laughing, having a good time reviewing the highlights of the past week. As we got distracted by the live band starting off with some good hits. Clearly nobody could sit still for a very long time, so we got up and hit the dance floor. The band didn’t just have a great choice of songs, but also a pretty unique interpretation of it, which I loved. Therefore you just had to get up, jump, dance and go wild! Pub and dance-floor were crowded and pretty much everybody within the pub dressed up like crazy. I have never seen such inspiring and funny costumes before. I think my personal favourite  was a guy dressed as a taco. 

As is got later, we decided to change the location. And I am pretty sure you can guess, were we headed to?! Right, the Yale Saloon, what else could it be. But to be honest, for me it was the first time there, so I was really excited to see the INTERNeXer’s favourite location myself. And what should I say? –  I was riding that bull. To be fair, not really good, but something tells me everyone else had a little bit more time to practice. So I am trying not to be too hard on myself here. Anyways, I am pretty sure I’ll get some more time to practise and one day I might even beat you guys, who know’s ;-).

HOW WAS YOUR WEEKEND?

One of the most exciting events is already knocking on the door. In case you haven’t realized all the decorated houses yet: Halloween is coming up! 

Since we all want to get to know the Canadian spirit, we started to get ourselves ready.  

And what is needed for the perfect Halloween Party after all? Right, an outstanding costume. So even though it was pouring rain, we got together and went all the way to Broadway to visit one of the places to get Halloween supplies. 

But calling it a store wouldn’t be fair after all. This was a Halloween-wonderland filled with everything you can imagine and even more.  

So we got to know each others different faces, literally! In a paradise of wigs, masks, decoration, fake blood and monsters we had so much fun trying on everything that came into our hands. Some of us even discovered new matching hair colours for themselves ;-). Every time you turned around and/or entered a different aisle, new stuff was waiting to be discovered. Time just flew by and our bunch of happy, exhausted people got to leave this magical and scary place after quite a long time. Therefore it just seemed to be the right thing to recover with a coffee and some delicious snacks near by. We got the chance to have some nice chats and actually discovered many differences of how we are usually spending Halloween back in Europe. Wouldn’t it be great to discover the Canadian way all together? I am glad you asked ;-). We do have something prepared, which we are already very excited about. 

We are happy to announce the upcoming Halloween Party on October 31st. We’ll get together at the Blarney Stone! You’ll find all necessary information on our Facebook page as usual. And don’t forget to wear your costumes! 

For those of you who just can’t get enough, and those who need to get more Halloween injected and obviously those who just love having a good time …. so basically all of you guys: We also have the visit in a haunted house scheduled next weekend. HALLOWEEN CLUB CRAWL REVIEW

Last Saturday was Halloween and nearly everyone went crazy. Actually that’s not surprising; I mean it’s one of the most popular events in North America. You could see many people who were dressed as a Minion. At least just as many wore a Super Mario or Luigi costume. Consequently the costume of my roommate and me perfectly fitted since, as I mentioned in one of my last blog posts, I was dressed as Mario and she was my “brother” Luigi.

For my first real Halloween party in Canada I certainly had big expectations and they were more than fulfilled last Saturday! Actually they were exceeded. Hundreds of people wearing Halloween costumes and went absolutely crazy.

 

After around 10pm the entire Granville Street was closed for cars. So Granville was just opened for all the party people and therefor the street was really crowded. The line-ups in front of the clubs were quite long. That’s why people partied even on the street.

First we had some difficulties at in the beginning but then we started our crazy night at the Harbour Event Center near BC Place. Shortly after we entered the club the first bus left to take us to our second party location. We went from party to party with a typical American school bus, which was absolutely amazing. I always wanted to take a bus like that. The atmosphere during the bus ride was incredible since the people turned the bus into a party bus. Probably most of them were already drunk at this time but they didn’t care after all it was Halloween. The bus driver let us off on Granville Street where all the fancy clubs are located.

It was the first time I celebrated Halloween in such a big way and it was a great to be part of it.
