INTERNeX Canada: How was your weekend?

Hello guys,

Another work weeks begins today! So let’s discuss this amazing and sunny weekend! On Saturday we went together to the Celebration of Light at English Bay. This is one of the biggest firework festivals in America!

 

First we met at the Starbucks. We had some cool frappuccino’s and other drinks.. After that we went down to the beach. It was early, so there was not a big crowd yet! We found a great spot in the middle of the beach.

Because we had to wait a few hours there was enough time to buy some food, and enjoy the sun! There were already a lot of people, but it was nice and friendly.

Around 8 pm the sun was getting lower and lower.. As you can see on the picture a big boat pumped water up in the air! After 9 the sun was gone. The skies were pretty clear, great weather for a big firework show!

 

At 10 pm the show started. This was the first night of the event! It’s really worth the wait when you see the show. I never saw so much fireworks before. And there will be 2 more of these great nights!

INTERNeX PuB NiGHT @ The Cambie!

Oh yes, it’s time for another INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! This time, we’re heading over the Cambie Bar in Gastown!

The Cambie bar is part of the Cambie Hostel, which all began in 1887, when a new saloon on the bustling Cordova Street quickly established itself as a happening social centre for locals and travelers alike. When the Prohibition of the 1920’s was in full swing, bootleggers floated their forbidden wares through False Creek and delivered them straight to the Cambie storeroom through an extensive network of underground tunnels. The General Store & Bakery adjacent to the pub saw its share of excitement too, as a boxing ring where five cents would buy you hours of ringside entertainment. Although the hotel got a major facelift in 1997 to camouflage a century of drunken debauchery, the spirit of excitement and fun is still very much alive.

So join INTERNeX at the Cambie on Wednesday, July 7 at 300 Cambie Street in Gastown! 8 p.m. is our usual meeting time, so come around then! This time we’ll have a little trivia quiz so we can dish out some prizes. Make sure to be on time or miss out on some good stuff!

Summer Time is the Best Time!

I just absolutely love summertime. Fresh, cool air breezes through the city and brings with it the aroma of sizzling meat on the barbecue. In Vancouver, the groups of people clustered on Robson Street signal the latest in-store sales and product promotions. In Toronto, the  GO trains become packed with Blue Jays fans waiting to see Ricky Romero wind up on the pitcher’s mound. Ahhh, summer.

This past Saturday was a great summer day for myself and some friends. If you live in Vancouver and were anywhere near Gastown this past weekend, you know that the Vancouver International Jazz Festival was on. As we strolled down Water Street, the atmosphere surrounding us was uplifting. Magicians and jugglers lined the streets, welcoming any and all spectators. Nearby pubs were packed with jazz fans yearning for a pint. Lemonade stands and corn on the cob stations offered food to satisfy anyone’s taste buds and two different stages hosted the smooth, rhythmic beats of Jazz.

Looking around, I couldn’t help but really feel a part of something that day. People lucky enough to live in Gastown hung out their windows, watching the live performances from the comfort of their own home. The crowds watching the shows were both young and old, tourists and Vancouverites alike – all coming to enjoy the same genre of music. It was a great day!

If you didn’t get the chance to go out this past weekend – shame on you…buuuutt don’t worry. The Jazz festival will continue until July 4, 2010.  For more information on show times and locations, visit the website.

Olympic Highlight 2010-02-23

So as the rest of the world was watching the men’s hockey match between Germany & Canada I have to admit I was encaptured by the women’s figure skating short program. It was quite a long program running up to 3 hours but the highlight of the event came with the final 3 skaters. Long time rivals, South Korean Kim Yu-Na and Japanese Mao Asada battled it out with two very fierce routines. However, no one came quite close enough to Kim’s “bond girl” dance which landed her a new world record mark of 78.50 points, a 4.74 point lead on Asada. This world champion, at the young age of 19, has dominated the season and is a hot favorite both back home in South Korea and in Canada due to the fact that she has done considerable training over here. But she showed few signs of the enormous pressure on her shoulders and confidently nailed all of her jumps whilst still keeping a her energy levels high. However, the person that truly stole the spotlight for me was Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette, who just two days ago had sadly lost her mother to a sudden heart attack just shortly after arriving in Vancouver to support her daughter. Wearing a black costume, the world silver medallist skated cleanly to her tango short programme “La Cumparsita” to the cheers of the spectators who rose to their feet at the end of her two-and-half minute routine. She hit all of her elements and tearfully finished her routine which earned her a season’s best 71.36 points and the accolades of the 11,000-plus crowd. This was definitely be a moment that will go down in Olympic history and hopefully Rochette will be able to continue on her path to the podium…Canada is really rooting for you!
