INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday ‘The East Van Cross’

Hello readers!

Today I want to share the story behind a famous sign in Vancouver.
I try to learn a lot about Vancouver when I’m here. Sometimes after work I take a bit of a detour with my bike to see some neighborhoods of this awesome city..

East-Van-CrossLast week I spotted the East Van Cross while cycling after work. I was really impressed by this massive piece of art so I looked up the story behind.

So this sign can be found at the corner of Great Northern Way and Clark Drive. As you can see on the picture it’s a big cross filled with letters.. Written vertically in massive letters is the word East.  Intersecting that horizontally is the word Van. (from Vancouver)

This iconic cross dates all the way back to the 50’s. At the time Ken Lum designed the cross. He reflected the art on the large Catholic population in East Vancouver at that time. But around the 60’s people from the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ adopted the sign as a symbol for there graffiti and gang style..

East%20Van%20Collage%20copyNowadays the sign has become an important symbol of East Vancouver.  According to a lot of writers the cultural part of Vancouver has officially moved from west of Cambie Street to east of Cambie Street.  East Van is home to some of the city’s most exciting new districts like Chinatown and Main Street, with all her eateries and restaurants.

You can take a really cool picture from the sign with downtown in the background..
And maybe you know some interesting spots, art etc. in the city as well? You can always share it in leaving a comment!

Have a great weekend,

Jelle

INTERNeX Canada: PuB NiGHT Review!

Last night we had our weekly pub night at the Lamplighter Public House, the city’s busiest pub for good reason: friendly service, cozy design and a large selection of drinks.

Lamplighter is also a very popular place because they usually show a variety of sports; so yeah, for those who want to watch soccer, this is the right place!

We had an awesome time there: We were drinking while watching hockey. (Vancouver vs San Jose).

The match was really intense, and for those who love hockey (mostly 95% of the pub) the atmosphere became really tense when Canucks lost (I know, too bad…but guys, keep in mind this is the first game, so Canucks will have more opportunities).

By the way, the place and the service were awesome, and we had a free bingo during the intermissions. Unfortunately we didn’t win, but next time we’ll do it for sure!

And the most important thing: it wasn’t pricey! 5$ Wings and $4,25 featured Phillips beer. Sounds good, eh ?

It was such an amazing night !!

I hope to see you soon and thank you all for coming!

Best,

Mercedes

INTERNeX Canada: Expose of the week ft Torben

Our expose of the week is Torben Kulasingam, a Danish guy from Aarhus, who came here to Vancouver for 5 months to do his internship.

Why did you go to Canada?
I got this golden opportunity to do my internship in Canada and I chose to take it because it automatically bought some challenges and experiences with it. A placement in Vancouver also bought a chance to explore an other part of the world where I haven’t been.

What kind of internship are you doing?
My internship is a part of my studies. I am an Architectural Engineering student and I am working at a Spanish engineering company downtown. Here I get the chance to share my knowledgde but also to gain a lot of experience.

Is your internship useful?
Yes , because as an engineer student , it’s important to feel the “real world” before you enter engineering branch. I’m participating in many kinds of projects and this is useful for my studies. Besides this I also get to know all of the English terms within this branch.

What kind of tasks are you responsible for on daily basis?
Right now I’m doing a lot work within sustainability solutions for a hospital project we want to make a bid on.  My architectural background contributes in the designing phase where my colleagues doesn’t have that same knowledge.

What was the best thing about your internship?
My internship is not finished, but so far has it been great to work with engineers and gain a lot new knowledge and to participate in conversations where your opinion actually will be heard.
I also got the chance to work with people from different parts of the world so e.g is my Spanish getting better because I read Spanish every day.

What do you like most about Canada and Vancouver?
I like Canada because it’s a “light” version of USA , it’s a country where people are friendly and open .Vancouver got the whole package which I like , you can go the moutains to ski and to the beach to swim the same day. Besides this I like that every parts of the world are represented here.

What trips did you do in your free time, also organized by INTERNeX?
I went to Grouse Mountain , Tsawwassen, Whytecliff , Lighthouse park, Stanley Park to cycle, Lynn Valley with INTERNeX.

Do you attend the weekly Pub-Night organized by INTERNeX and do you think this is a good way to meet new people?
Yes I attend to the weekly Pub- Night and this is the place to be if you want to start a friendship and create bonds.

Why did you choose INTERNeX International Exchange?
Because it’s a huge opportunity to create friendships across continents .

What’s the best thing about INTERNeX International Exchange?
The best thing is that they arrange something all the time so you won’t feel bored and want to go home.

How did you find a place to stay?
INTERNeX helped me find a homestay and the international student house.

Would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange?
Yes, I’ve already recommended to my friends and fellow students in Denmark.

Thank you so much to share your experience with us Torben.

We wish you luck for the rest of the internship and see you soon!

Cheers,

Irene
