Summer has arrived, so it is time to go outside and do some fun activities. Good news is that you don’t have to spend (too much) money to join the fun. Here are some ideas for your free time.

I am sure you have already heard about the famous outdoor cinema, which takes place every Tuesday at Second Beach in Stanley Park. We just went there yesterday and watched The Lion King, it was a lot of fun! Next week, Mean Girls is on the program. Just take a blanket and some snacks with you and enjoy the movie.

37298454_1806962999396722_1371304262142787584_nDo you always have plans on Tuesday nights? No problem, you can also watch an outdoor movie on Thursdays at the Waterfront Cinema at Canada Place. Movies are shown until the end of August. Tomorrow, from 9.10pm on, the movie COCO will be on the screen. You can find the entire movie line-up here. Make sure you arrive early to reserve yourself a good spot.

Another great activity for hot summer days is of course swimming or at least splashing. You can cool down in one of the five outdoor swimming pools that are spread over the city:

  • Kitsilano Pool
  • Maple Groove Pool (South Vancouver)
  • Hillcrest Aquatic Centre (close to Queen Elisabeth Park)
  • New Brighton Pool
  • Second Beach Pool (Stanley Park)

You can check out all location details and opening hours here. Admission fee for one visit is $6.10, except for Maple Grove Pool – only $3 for this one. If you are planning to go more often, you can also purchase a 10-visit pass for $48.80. You get 25% off the regular price, when you show up with a group of 10+ people. So, time to gather your friends and save some money!

14583004328_d24ee0c590_nWhy spend the evening in the gym when you can also work out in the fresh air? Just dance the night away during free Zumba classes. Canada Place is again the place-to-be for this activity. The one-hour classes take place every Monday until August 27 and start at 5.30pm. And no worries – you don’t have to be a dance pro. Everyone is welcome to join the fun workout with a view.

Next to Zumba, you can also enjoy free Yoga classes. Mat Collective Yoga offers outdoor classes at diverse great locations in Vancouver. You can either join a class downtown in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, in East Van, at Kits Beach or even on Granville Island. Different kinds of classes are offered every day until the end of August. So you could even go daily without even spending a loonie. Check out the live schedule here. Keep in mind that you need to sign a waiver before you join a class. However, you don’t need to sign up, just get in your sport clothes and take part in the class at unique locations!

I hope I could help you save some money! See you tonight at The Relish – where you get a beer for $3, by the way ;-).

What could be more refreshing than a cold drink? Especially since the past few days it’s become warmer and warmer in Vancity. So how can we compensate this “intense” heat?

Just wait for the 11th of July. On this day, 7-eleven is giving out free Slurpees. This day is also understood as the birthday of 7-eleven. Quite clever, huh? 😉 Back to the Slurpee. You never heard of a Slurpee before? One more reason to go for it on the 11th of July. But for those that want to know before they go, I will give a short briefing: A Slurpee is basically really fine, crushed ice, mixed with a flavour of your choice. The range of flavours is big: from Coca-Cola to Mountain Dew and fruits like lime, grape, orange or banana. Mouth-watering, isn’t it? 😋 My advice: If you fall in love with the Slurpee, get a loyalty card and every 7th drink will be for free for you! So, go ahead and get slurping. 🥤

BUT, the Slurpee is not the only drink you can get for free the upcoming days. The 14th of July is Root Beer Day at A&W. Ever tried this non-alcoholic beer? To be honest, it does not really have anything in common with regular beer, except for the foam when freshly poured in a glass. It has an incomparable taste and is very refreshing. Go for it and give it a try. At A&W it is produced using all natural ingredients, so don’t worry, nothing artificial about this one! My advice: Sign up for coupons on the A&W website. With these coupons, you will get top-ups on your orders or a free side to your order. Who does not love free pancakes or an upgrade to sweet potato fries?

14044809449_059fb00c74_nAre all those sweet drinks not really for you? I do have an alternative. It also includes a drink (Bubble Tea or Thai Ice Tea) and a healthy Poké bowl. 🍲 And this for only $5. Where you can get this amazing offer? It’s at the Poké and Sushi Restaurant “Daddy’s Kitchen” (2586 Commercial Drive). That’s not even a minute walk from the Expo Line station Commercial-Broadway.

I hope you’ll have the time to check out some of the offers and maybe find your new favourite drink! 👍

See you tonight at the Dublin Calling Rooftop!

The past couple of days, it has been over 25 degrees Celsius in Vancouver. AKA: Summer is coming! Therefore, I thought it would be the perfect time to tell you about some great, affordable summer activities you can do during this time of year.

Kayaking Bowen Island May 2018Do you enjoy being on the water? Summer is the perfect season to go kayaking in False Creek! Groupon currently offers a 40% discount on two-hour single kayaks and a 44% discount on tandem kayaks. This means you can enjoy the beautiful view from the water, the calming sound of the waves and of course, improve your kayak skills, for only $24! The promotional value expires August 31st.

Would you like to do something less standard? Go paddle boarding! You can do this at Kitsilano Beach as well as Granville Island. From Granville Island, you can paddle down to False Creek or to English Bay and enjoy the beautiful views you will pass by on your way. If you’re lucky, you might even see some seals! Groupon offers a discount for this activity as well: two hours of paddle boarding on a weekday will cost you $17 instead of $33 and two hours of paddle boarding on any day will cost you $21. Tip: bring a friend and rent a paddle board for two people. Why? Well, Groupon offers a 51% discount, meaning you and your friend only have to pay $33 in total! This promotional value expires September 5th.

6054509692_718b4d44d3_mNot into water activities? No need to worry! If you enjoy movies and being surrounded by nature, I have the perfect activity for you: watch an outdoor movie at Stanley Park! Every Tuesday, between July 3rd and August 21st, you can wrap yourself in a warm blanket, eat popcorn and watch your favourite throwback movies, all while breathing in fresh air. The best part: it’s completely free! You can find the line-up here.

If you would just like to do something simple; organize a barbecue with your friends and divide the preparation among the people who join. A fun day guaranteed! I hope the weather stays nice enough for you to do all these activities. If it does: don’t forget to wear sunscreen and take water with you!

See you all tonight at the Lamplighter for PuB NiGHT!

Hands up, who starts the day with a freshly brewed coffee? If you are a coffee lover, then Vancouver is certainly a paradise for you! Coffee places are literally at every corner. Even if you wouldn’t mention coffee as your favourite drink, a coffee place is an awesome place to meet people, clear your mind or even take your laptop and get some work done. The downside of all those visits is of course the costs. So here are some tips to lower your coffee place expenses!

34628291_1746856278740728_6024587850580754432_nFirst of all, you can save some money if you order a regular coffee instead of a fancy latte. Just pimp the simple coffee yourself with as much milk, sugar, cinnamon or cacao as you want. All these extras are usually available for free here, so just be your own barista!

Starbucks is one of the most famous coffee brands in the world and they are just everywhere in Vancouver. At Starbucks, you can already receive a small discount if you bring your own mug. It does not only help the environment, but you also have to pay ten cents less for your drink. Doesn’t seem like a lot, I know, but if you do that ten times you already saved a loonie for your next coffee. 😉

You can easily join the Starbucks Rewards program. All you need to do is register a physical Starbucks Card, Teavana Card, Evolution Fresh Card or Starbucks Card eGift online and create an account. Once you have registered, you collect stars for every dollar you spent, which you can redeem for free food and drinks. Also, you can profit from monthly special offers. Last month for example, we enjoyed cheap, delicious Frappuccino’s at the office. Next to that, you get a reward for your birthday and free in-store refills. You can check it out here.

There are also plenty of delicious non-coffee drinks available at coffee places. Blenz is currently offering a special to celebrate the start of the summer season. Bring your friends and enjoy one of their Iced Tea Lemonades. The flavours sound delicious: mango ginger, strawberry cucumber and melon berry. You pay one and get the second lemonade for free! This offer is valid from June 5 to June 18 between 2 – 5pm at all Blenz Coffee locations.

I hope you enjoy some good coffees and lemonades, guys!

See you tonight at The Relish!

Is it difficult for you to get used to the high amount of money you have to pay whenever you go grocery shopping? Are you scared to look at your bank account because you lost track of how much money you’ve spent? Or are you OK, but you would like to save money anyway? Then continue reading! Just for you, we have found two useful apps to download that will help you get the most out of your money.

Checkout 51: Checkout 51 is an app that provides free discounts on selected items. The only thing you have to do is create an account and you will find the discounts of the week. Then, you just have to buy the item at any supermarket or drug store, take a receipt with you and scan 7564230112_764338094e_nit onto the app. Easy peasy. The amount of discount you receive depends on the price of the product itself. You might get $1 discount on various types of food, but $5 on alcoholic beverages, such as vodka and whisky (they are actually on offer right now, so this is your chance to download the app!). The app is available for IOS (8 and higher) and Android and there is Checkout 51 website as well.

Ebates: To the ones who enjoy online shopping on their days off, I got you! Just create an account on Ebates and select the website where you would like to do some shopping. Then, you’ll be redirected to that site and once you have ordered an item, you will earn a percentage of your money back within a few months. It might take a while, but look at it this way: soon you’ll forget about it and when the money you earned back is in your account, it will be a surprise! The percentage you will receive back depends on the shop, but even if you only save 5%, it’s better than none and in expensive Vancouver, every loony counts!

I hope this will save you all some money!

See you all at PuB NiGHT tonight at The Portside Pub!
