The New Kid on the Blog

Hey Friends!

I want to introduce myself to you: My name is Tino and I’m 20 years old. I live in a small village near Stuttgart in Germany. For the next two months I am a new member of the PR Department of the INTERNeX team for an internship for the next two months.

Right now I’m studying Business Administration with the focus on banking and finance. As part of my practical phases, I’m doing an internship here in Vancouver.

In my freetime I love making music like playing the trumpet at an orchestra, the guitar at a fireplace with some friends or making music with the DJ-Pad. I also love photographing and spending time in the nature! My biggest wish is to travel the world and I’m glad that I can make some experience of that here in Canada.

I decided to do an internship in Canada because the country and it’s culture impressed me.

“To travel is to take a journey into yourself” – Danny Kaye

My first impression of Vancouver was the combination of many things in many ways: On the one hand a big city with unlimited opportunities and on the other hand the beauty of nature around the town. On top of that the people in this city are so caring and friendly. This combo is breathtaking, trust me!

My biggest wish in Canada is to travel to Yukon to do some dogsledding and to (hopefully) see the northern lights!

I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to be part of INTERNeX and to get involved with new people. I’m so excited where the journey guides me. See you in Vancouver!

Cheers,

Tino

Candidate Exposé

For the past month, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Simone. She flew in from the Netherlands and came to explore Canada on October 15, 2009. I’ve gotten the chance to hang out and party with Simone while living at the INTERNeX staff house, and she is so full of character! It’s evident in her laugh that she’s been having a blast in Vancouver, and she recently got to show her family around town too while they came for a visit!

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Well, it was really hard to get a visa for the United States. Vancouver was the next closest thing and the Olympics were going to be held there so that’s what helped me make my decision.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
I found out about INTERNeX through a dutch organization called Travel Active.

What program are you currently participating in?
I am in the Hospitality program doing a city placement at Blenz.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I love working with other international people, some of which are my roommates and housemates.

What skills do you use at work?
I have to multi-task and have great social skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
It is beautiful – a lot like Europe. People are really nice here… almost too nice!

Can you sum up your experience in Canada?
It is an awesome time to get to know life and more about myself.

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
I’ve seen a lot of nature, been to the Rockies, and visited lots of areas within Vancouver such as Granville Island, Metrotown and many different beaches!

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to travel more all over the world, and maybe come back to Canada to work on a farm. Eventually though I would like to settle down back at home in the Netherlands.

Yesterday Lauren and I had the pleasure of meeting Ali, a 21-year-old student from Turkey. When he walked into the office smiling, we could immediately tell that he had a great personality! As he sat down to chat with us, his casually unbuttoned shirt defined his easy-going attitude and we could tell he was enjoying his time in Vancouver!

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
I came here to continue my education in filming! I moved here alone but also have a friend and cousin living in Canada.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
I attended a language school and they referred INTERNeX for a work placement.

What program are you currently participating in?
I am in the Hospitality program, and I work at Blenz as a Junior Barista and have been employed there for six months.

Do you like Hospitality program offered by INTERNeX?
I do. I recommend it because it’s better than finding a job by yourself, they give support and offer guidance.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I get to meet new people every day.

What skills do you use at work?
I interact with people daily so I must have great personal skills and also I have to be able to focus and multi-task.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
I would say that this country is a mix of Europe and America, it is a beautiful country. This is my first time in Canada and I love it because it’s very organized. Everything is safe, people obey the rules.  Explore a new country as soon as possible, it’s very different! There’s lots of new culture and language.

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
I’ve been snowboarding, to Whistler and to Stanley Park!

What are your plans for the future?
I plan on living in Canada for awhile and attending university for communications and filming.

Meet a New Staff Member

So it has been a few weeks since we had our last INTERNeX staff member introduction. Life here in the office has been pretty crazy and I’ve had a few bumps along the rode so i hope you enjoy one of the few remaining expose’s. This week you will gain a glimpse into Marien one of our lovely staff members who has a lot to offer to both INTERNeX and you…

What is your first name?
Marien

Where are you from?
Mexico City

What languages do you speak fluently other than English?
Spanish and I used to be fluent in Italian because I used to live there back in 1991-1992, but not anymore

What position do you hold at INTERNeX? And for how long have you been working here?
I am the program manager for hospitality and I have been working in/at INTERNeX for the past two years and a half

What made you want to become involved with INTERNeX in the first place?
Years ago I was working in an international programs office at one of the main private universities in Mexico City. I was primarily responsible for student placements within their field of study and INTERNeX was actually one of our partners and that is how I came to meet Tim.

In what ways do you think INTERNeX is unique from other international placement agencies? What does INTERNeX specifically offer that no other company can?
First and foremost our tailor made placements. In this process we are focusing primarily on the participants and their personal goals and from there we find a suitable position for them. Another important and unique aspect of our company is our international team and work environment. We are all highly committed to this companies missions and values and we appreciate the fact that even though we have a substantial amount of systems and procedures in place, we are granted a considerable amount of freedom in which we can truly flourish. Given this room for innovation INTERNeX can always be one step ahead

What changes within INTERNeX have you personally witnessed since you have joined the team?
The city placement program has grown and developed on an exponential level. And we now have INTERNeX New Zealand

Where would you like to see INTERNeX in the next 10 years? Do you have any New Year’s goals for the company?
As other staff members have mentioned previously, I too would like to see at least one INTERNeX office, both for in and outbound, in each continent all around the world. Now what I mean by in and out bound is that we will cater to both international clients wanting to come into Canada and Canadians interested in travelling/working abroad

Tell us one interesting thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
As most of my candidates I took a gap year myself back in high school. I lived, worked and traveled in Europe for a year and a half. I studied English, worked as an au-pair and even as a cleaner so I can truly relate with all of the participants of our hospitality program.

Oh and another thing is that when I was young I wanted to be an Olympic gymnast. At age 6 I was already training 4 hrs a day, but then my family and I moved to a smaller city where there were no Olympic trainers so I unfortunately had to find a new dream.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Well surprise surprise I have to say Vancouver. Coming from Mexico, which is a highly commercialized area with lots of, Vancouver just seems like this evergreen oasis in comparison. It is by far one of the most beautiful cities in the world and everyday I continue to be taken aback by all that is has to offer. But open to new cities and experiences.
