INTERNeX Toronto: Fun Fact – Yonge Street

Have you ever asked, what is the longest street in the world? No? Well, me neither, but I was surprised to discover that this title belongs to Yonge Street in Toronto, Canada.

Yonge Street, pronounced “young”, was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest street in the world at 1,896 km, which is approximately the length of San Diego to Seattle. Crazy, right? Also known as Highway 11, Yonge Street links Toronto, the capital of Ontario, with northern parts of the region. It was fundamental in the establishment of western Upper Canada in the 1790s as a route for communication exchange.

Today, this street is like Main, Robson, Burrard and Granville Street in Vancouver, all put together.  It combines the financial district of Toronto with every kind of shopping, services, food and entertainment you can imagine. This includes the Eaton Center, one of the biggest malls in Canada, which boasts 230 stores and restaurants with over one million visitors per week.

Also located on Yonge street is the Yonge and Dundas Square. This square is an open public space that regularly hosts free concerts, events and film viewings. When a big name such as comedian Russell Peters comes to perform, people spill out into the actual intersection. Check out their website for what’s happening daily!

What’s really interesting about this square is that it holds the first pedestrian scramble, or scramble intersection, in the city. This is a crossing system that stops all traffic allowing pedestrians to cross at any direction of the intersection at the same time. I’m not sure how that works, but it sounds a bit confusing yet effective?

Toronto is an amazing city for many reasons, but Yonge Street is another reason why you should check it out!

Cheers,

Queenie
