INTERNeX Canada: Green Men

Now that the hockey season is back in full swing, what do you think? I personally find myself having something to look forward to every two days and it makes for better conversations.

If you’ve been watching the games, you might have noticed two men dressed in green spandex sitting, or more likely acting a little crazy, beside the penalty boxes.

Known as Force and Sully, the “Green Men” are mega fans of the Vancouver Canucks who attend every home game to entertain the fans and annoy the opposing players while they are in the penalty box. Some of their crazy antics have been doing handstands against the glass, signs with provocative sayings or using cutouts of celebrities.

The pair decided to wear green suits to a game after being inspired by the character Charlie Kelly wearing a similar suit in the television program, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Since then, they’ve become infamous not only in Vancouver, but also in the hockey world.

Amongst much recognition, they have been inducted into ESPN Hall of Fans last year, have even written their own book Behind the Green, documenting their journey into their new found fame and almost 200,000 likes on their Facebook page.

Force and Sully have said that they will be around to entertain the hockey world until the Canucks win the Stanley cup that is. Take a look at what they are all about!

Cheers,

Queenie

Lasertag and Karaoke Re-cap!

How did you spend your Labour Day? 12 INTERNeX candidates met up and had an amazing day playing Lasertag and singing their lungs out at Karaoke! Thanks everyone for coming out yesterday to our Lasertag and Karaoke night!

We arrived at Laserdome at 4.30 and we were able to start our Lasertag game. In total we played 3 games and had a lot of fun. Before each game we were divided into different groups and we were sent out to ‘kill’ as many people as possible.  Each of us had a vest on and a gun in our hands. The vest had several targets on them. They would light up a color (your team color) and you would have to shoot everyone that did not have the same color as you. There were some people (Adam!) that were really into it and they were even rolling around on the floor trying to shoot people. If you were shot than you were ‘dead’ for a few seconds and then you are back in the game again.  If you shot someone the gun would say:’ Good shot’ and you would earn 150 points for your team. If you got shot you would lose 75 points. You also had an individual score to see who was got the highest score of the group. For our group that was newcomer Youp! He just arrived in Vancouver and came out with us to meet new people.

After lasertag everyone was pretty hungry so we made our way back to Downtown and got a nice meal at Malone’s on West Pender Street. Most of us at a burger and fries, something I would totally recommend you to do!

After dinner it was time for Karaoke. We went to Fantacity, a Korean/Japanese style karaoke. This meant that we had our own room with a giant TV and two microphones. Everyone sung at least 2 songs and had a lot of fun doing it! We had songs ranging from Fame to the Real Slim Shady and some good, and some bad singers. Want to hear some of the songs we sang? Check Nathalie’s Facebook page for the video’s she posted online. On the INTERNeX Facebook site and our Flick Page you can view the pictures from the entire night!

Tomorrow is PuBNiGHT, a night that is also filled with music. But this time you don’t have to sing yourself. So meet us at the Blarney Stone at 8.30 pm for some games, laughs and beers!

Candidate Exposé

Meet Gudrun, a young mind from Germany who is ready to conquer anything Canada throws her way. I first met Gudrun at the INTERNeX office a few weeks ago, and then again at INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! We chatted for awhile about her internship and how she was enjoying her time spent in Canada. She was so interesting to talk to, I thought I would ask her to share more about her experiences so far.

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Canada was my destination of choice as I decided I would like to spend time in an English speaking country and Vancouver has a reputation for being innovative and very keen on sports. I think living and working overseas is an important learning/life experience and in today’s global society, it is getting more and more important to gain a more international perspective.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
INTERNeX is in collaboration with my German organization, which arranged everything for me.

What program are you currently participating in?
I’m doing an unpaid internship!

Do you like program offered by INTERNeX?
Yes, I think they offer many different kinds of options, so anybody will find the right program.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy learning a lot about the structure and work processes within the company. It’s great to have the opportunity to work unsupervised and to display initiative.

What skills do you use at work?
I use my computer skills along with my verbal and written English language skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
You have to experience Canada yourself, but I would recommend Canada to anybody. It seems to be a country with lots of international influences and many opportunities, regarding sports, culture, nature, shopping and sightseeing… and the Canadians are all very friendly and open-minded.

Can you sum up your experience in 10 words or less?
Vancouver is awesome, I’ve enjoyed every minute so far!

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
There is still so much to do, but I’ve been to Seattle already, I also enjoyed Stanley Park and the Aquarium, Granville Island, The Capilano Suspension Bridge and of course some pubs in Downtown.

What are your plans for the future?
After my internship I want to travel first before I’m going back to Germany. Afterwards I will either apply for a new job or doing my PhD. I haven’t decided yet.
