What to do on the weekend ?

Hello boys and girls!

Another week is over, so we will check out what is going on in Vancouver this weekend. It seems that the weather will not be so good (Saturday cloudy/sunny, Sunday rain), but this would not stop our activities.

All of you should know, that there is the Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival from Friday, June 21 to Sunday, June 23. The huge three-day event will take place around the creek at Concord Pacific Place, Creekside, and of course, in the waters.  The city´s biggest Dragon Boat celebration will also feature live music, entertainment, food, shopping, family fun, and local artisans.  It is definitely worth a visit! There will be no entry fee.

In addition to that the International Jazz Festival 2019 takes place this weekend in Downtown Vancouver. If you are interested in Jazz music, you should come to the Robson Square. The festival lasts two days, namely on the 22nd and 23rd June. You don´t have to pay for a lot of concerts. On both days different musicians are going to perform between 12pm and 9pm. To see the exact entry-free concert program, look at the website www.vancouversbestplaces.com .

Finally I want to remind you of our INTERNeX event on Sunday. We have planned a Barbecue at the Spanish Banks Beach. If you look at the current weather report, there will be rain on Sunday. And a Barbecue in the rain is definitely not fun.

Due to that we will go out for Burger eating all together. We reserved a table on Sunday, the 23rd June at the White Spot (405 Dunsmuir St, Vancouver, BC V6B 1X4) at 6pm.

We would be very happy if a lot of you come along for eating burgers with us. 48002939878_390603280c_o.jpeg

Those who have already paid for the BBQ can either pick up their money in the INTERNeX office or get it back at the dinner on Sunday.

Enjoy your weekend☺

Reminder: International Dinner

The international dinner will take place on Saturday the 5th of April in the INTERNeX office at 7:00pm and we hope you all will join us. We are located in 88 West Pender Street at the International Mall. You have enough from Fries and Burgers and all the american food? Than cook or bake a traditional food from your home country and share it with us. The idea from the international dinner is that we can taste food from different countries. We don’t expect that you cook a hole meal just something simple. If you could bring $1 this night, we can provide you with plates, cutlery and etc.. Since we are located in the Mall, we are not allowed to drink alcoholic drinks but we can go afterwards to a after-dinner-drink somewhere else.

If you want to taste my german Kaiserschmarn than click here to join the event.

See you all on Wednesday for our PuB NiGHT @the Pint at 7:00pm!

INTERNeX Canada: Have you ever tried a POUTINE?

Canada doesn’t have an official national food, but our famous “poutine” is a strong contender for this title! What is it? A poutine consists of three main ingredients: fries, gravy and cheese curds.

Yup, basically a dish full of grease and calories and probably shouldn’t be eaten, but it is the most delicious thing ever. This is the best thing when you are freezing cold or if you are taking a break from skiing on the slopes.

Cheese curds, which is basically unprocessed cheese that should be eaten when fresh, was invented when dairy farmers in Quebec wanted to save excess production. It has a soft chewy texture with little taste and makes a squeaky sound when you bite into it.

Quebec is also where poutine has originated. Many Quebecois communities such as Drummondville and Warwick claim to be the birthplace of this dish in the late 1950s, but nobody really knows who or where this trend really started.

Now, poutine has become popular all over Canada and in the United States especially in New York and New Jersey. There are many variations to the basic gravy, cheese and fries with additional ingredients such as other cheeses, pulled pork, beans and barbecue sauces. Basically like a nacho, anything goes!

You might have to go to Montreal to find the best and most original kind of poutine, but here are some really good and cheap places in Vancouver to try this dish:

  • La Belle Province (1215 Davie St. & Robson St.): This is where you are going to find the most authentic version as it serves traditional Quebecius cuisine.
  • Fritz European Fry House (718 Davie Street & Granville St.): As the name hints, Fritz specializes in fries. That’s pretty much all they sell there with a whole bunch of poutine toppings and sauces to try.
  • Costco Food Court (605 Expo Boulevard, right across Rogers Arena): This might be an unusual place for poutine as Costco is a warehouse that sells goods in bulk. (Psst, this is a special Smart Saver Vancouver for those of you who got this far in the post!) Their huge poutine goes for about $4.50 and everything on the menu is very cheap. While you need a membership card to purchase anything else in the store, their food court is open to anyone!

You must try this Canadian cuisine while you are living here! It might look kind of gross, but trust me, you’ll fall in love!

Cheers,

Queenie

INTERNeX Canada: Smart Saver Vancouver – The Famous Warehouse!

Want cheap food, but are too lazy to cook at home? The Famous Warehouse is one of my favorite places to grab a quick bite and is often frequented by INTERNeX-ers. First of all, you can’t really go wrong with pub food.

Secondly, everything on the menu is $4.95 – burgers with fries or soup, salads, wings in many flavours, fish tacos, spaghetti with meat sauce and more! You name it and its $4.95.

Well, technically $5.54 with tax (and I know this because Irene and I just went yesterday for lunch!) and $6 with tip.

I don’t think you can do better than this, unless you go to Mcdonald’s, but that’s kind of boring and you can’t have a beer to go with your burger!

Even better on Wednesday’s, they have $0.30 wings and Tuesday is all you can eat tacos for $7!

They have decent portions and though it is not the most luxurious food, you cannot beat the price.

Seeing their original location at Granville is always, always busy with line-ups, they just recently opened a new one on Hastings. So go check it out next time you are craving some delicious greasy food and let me know what you think!
