ABOUT INTERNeX: The INTERNeX Team!

What’s so special about participating in one of our programs in Canada is that you will meet people from all over the world who have had unique experiences and backgrounds! There is never a dull moment because you are constantly immersed in and learning about different cultures and ways of life.

Just like you, our INTERNeX team in Vancouver have come from various parts of the world! Most of us have fallen deeply in love with this city and have settled down here, while others are just soaking it all up for a couple of months. The differences in each person are what make us all unique, but are crucial to helping us to understand YOU- our candidates – better. We pride ourselves in having the opportunity to experience the international community, and in turn, providing this experience to our candidates.

Not sure who we are or where we are from? We took a new photo of the current INTERNeX team in Vancouver and thought it would be nice to share it with everyone!

From the left we have Mayuko – our administrator (originally from Japan), Barbara – our Placement Manager (from Canada), Mina – our Program Director (originally from Korea), Tim – the President (from Canada), Marianne (from Germany) and Queenie (originally from Hong Kong) – two of our Public Relations Coordinator and Patrick – our Volunteer Program Manager (originally from the Netherlands).

Baring in mind that Martina – our program manager (who originally from and is currently away in Germany), Simon– our IT and PR manager (also from Germany) and Irene, another one of our public relations coordinator (from Spain) is missing from this picture!

We aren’t so scary, are we now? We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have so don’t be afraid to email, call or come find us! Feeling homesick or lost? Just come for a chat! We love working with you and are looking forward to getting to know each one of you better.

Cheers,

Queenie

Tonight is PuBNiGHT!

PuBNiGHT!

Yah it’s Wednesday again – and you know what that means! It’s time for the weekly INTERNeX and Global Work and Travel PuBNiGHT! Last week we had a big, crazy bunch of people attending, let’s see if we can top that this week. So bring all your friends and come to the Blarney Stone. If you are new in town or never been to the PuBNiGHT before, what better thing is there to do on a Wednesday night then to go out and get to know some new friends over a beer.  We promise you will have a good time, and some laughs 😉

Tonight is going to be an extra special night: West Trek and Moose are coming to the PuBNiGHT and are giving away some awesome prizes. Last week West Trek gave away a trip to Whistler, so who knows what they will give away this time. It will be Moose’s first time to our PuBNiGHT, and we’re looking forward to having them both there with us!

As some of you might know INTERNeX is partnering up with Global Work and Travel at the PuBNiGHTS. Global Work and Travel Co. is company that helps Australians come to Canada to work and have fun. Last week we had some of their Staff coming out and tonight hopefully we will have some of their travelers coming out too, so Anna (our only Australian these days) may not be the only Aussie there!

This week we sadly have a few people leaving Canada to go back to Germany, but luckily we also have a few new people coming out. We will do our best to make everyone feel welcome and make sure that everyone has a great time!

We will be at the Blarney Stone at 8.30 pm. See you there!

Candidate Exposé

Meet Gudrun, a young mind from Germany who is ready to conquer anything Canada throws her way. I first met Gudrun at the INTERNeX office a few weeks ago, and then again at INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! We chatted for awhile about her internship and how she was enjoying her time spent in Canada. She was so interesting to talk to, I thought I would ask her to share more about her experiences so far.

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Canada was my destination of choice as I decided I would like to spend time in an English speaking country and Vancouver has a reputation for being innovative and very keen on sports. I think living and working overseas is an important learning/life experience and in today’s global society, it is getting more and more important to gain a more international perspective.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
INTERNeX is in collaboration with my German organization, which arranged everything for me.

What program are you currently participating in?
I’m doing an unpaid internship!

Do you like program offered by INTERNeX?
Yes, I think they offer many different kinds of options, so anybody will find the right program.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy learning a lot about the structure and work processes within the company. It’s great to have the opportunity to work unsupervised and to display initiative.

What skills do you use at work?
I use my computer skills along with my verbal and written English language skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
You have to experience Canada yourself, but I would recommend Canada to anybody. It seems to be a country with lots of international influences and many opportunities, regarding sports, culture, nature, shopping and sightseeing… and the Canadians are all very friendly and open-minded.

Can you sum up your experience in 10 words or less?
Vancouver is awesome, I’ve enjoyed every minute so far!

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
There is still so much to do, but I’ve been to Seattle already, I also enjoyed Stanley Park and the Aquarium, Granville Island, The Capilano Suspension Bridge and of course some pubs in Downtown.

What are your plans for the future?
After my internship I want to travel first before I’m going back to Germany. Afterwards I will either apply for a new job or doing my PhD. I haven’t decided yet.

Not sure which program is for you? Visit http://www.internexcanada.com for more information on how INTERNeX can make your trip to Canada happen!

INTERNeX PuB NiGHT

Ummm so snow in the forecast!? In the middle of march!? Can anyone say global warming lol. It’s strange how winter seems to becoming in so late i feel like i should be going into hibernation soon. I’m more of a summer girl so I’m not down with snow. But there is something to look forward too…1)INTERNeX PuB NiGHT at The Blarney Stone and 2) St. Paddy’s Day woohoo. So this annual festival celebrates Saint Patrick, one of the most commonly recognized of the patron of saints of Ireland. This event is generally celebrated on the 17th of March and even though it is widely celebrated world wide and is considered to be a national holiday of Ireland, we wont be getting a day off from work for this one. Too bad i know! But that doesn’t you have to miss out on the festivities. You can start the week off right by joining us at the Blarney Stone (216 Carrall Street, Gastown) where you can eat, drink and party like the Irish! Home to one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the city, you can enjoy the festive joys of green beer, a full Irish menu and Irish dancers both day and night. So originally the color associated with St. Patrick was actually blue, not green. However, over the years the color green and its association with this day has grown so let’s do it like the Irish and at least wear one green item…but the more the better really! So gotta run but I really hope to see you all out next Monday night at 8pm at the Blarney Stone Irish PuB.

INTERNeX Family Interview #4

What is your first name?
Patrick.

Where are you from?
I am from the Netherlands. More specifically it’s actually an Island in the South West, known as Zuid Beveland.

What languages do you speak fluently other than English?
Fluently?…just Dutch.

What position do you hold at INTERNeX? And for how long have you been working here?
I am the placement manager for the Paid Vancouver Placements and also a marketing coordinator. I have been holding this position for the past three years now.

What made you want to become involved with INTERNeX in the first place?
Well I started off as an intern actually and then I was offered a more permanent position once my internship had ended.

In what ways do you think INTERNeX is unique from other international placement agencies? What does INTERNeX specifically offer that no other company can?
Our motto actually highlights why we are unique; it says “Undersell and over deliver”. Yes we are a company that strives for profit; however, monetary gains are not our main driving force. Our entire team is dedicated to making our candidates better global citizens, so first and foremost we are all about our candidates. Secondly, I wholeheartedly believe that INTERNeX is always ahead of the market so we truly set the standard for this industry. We have led the way for other companies to realize that the path to true success is to customize the programs to the candidate not the other way around.

What changes within INTERNeX have you personally witnessed since you have joined the team?
Even though I have only been a part of this company for the past three years I have seen an innumerous amount of changes. However, I will highlight the ones that I see as the most important. First and foremost, our company, our systems, and our staff have become more professional. Since our expansion in terms of our international reach our work load and ultimately work hours have extended so no more leaving the office early to catch the hockey game haha. Secondly, in terms of our candidates the amount of things that they can participate in besides from the program in which they are placed has exponentially increased. And with this increase in activities I have really witnessed the fostering of a true community amongst our INTERNeX clients.

Where would you like to see INTERNeX in the next 10 years? Do you have any New Year’s goals for the company?
Well I would like to see INTERNeX as a global brand for our industry. We can set the standard on a global level and introduce our personalized services to the rest of the world. I would also like to see us sending Canadians abroad so we address both sides of our international exchange markets. And on a more personal side I am really invested in expanding and successfully promoting our wildlife/environmental volunteer program.

Tell us one interesting thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
When I was twenty years old, my father, my uncle and I climbed a mountain in Africa. This mountain was called Mount Kilimanjaro and it’s actually the highest peak in Africa at 5,895 meters (19,341 ft). It took us seven days to climb this mountain because if we went any quicker we would have suffered from altitude sickness, which can actually result in death if you do not take the time to acclimatize.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
Hmm well there are many places that I would love to travel to but being a tourist in a country and being a resident are two very different experiences. But I would love to live in Pantanal, Brazil and open up my own eco resort.
