PuB NiGHT Review: Dublin Calling Rooftop

‘Come sit on the roof with me – the drinks are cold and the friends are free’. Those words are written on a sign at Dublin Calling Rooftop, the location of yesterday’s pub night.

Dublin Calling Rooftop is definitely the place to be for a sunny night like yesterday. What a cozy atmosphere and lovely decoration in this pub located in the middle of busy Granville Street! Soon after our official start at 8pm, more and more of you found their way to our tables. Main topic of the night – next to the world cup, of course – was the upcoming camping trip. Everybody is excited for the big adventure on Vargas Island this weekend.

For some it was the first, for others the last pub night. So, we signed some Canadian flags with lovely goodbye words and talked about all the Canadian adventures of the past months. Good chance for all newcomers to get some ideas for the upcoming weeks.

Signing Canadian flags is one tradition. The other one is called karaoke. So, after the glasses were emptied, some of us got on their way to Gastown. The (leftover) INTERNeX gang performed ‘500 miles’, Samuel finally got introduced to our way of karaoke and Rebecka said goodbye to the Met. That was another great Wednesday.

Goodbye for now

All good things must come to an end they say, and that also means my wonderful journey here in Vancouver must come to an end… And that end is here.

My life changing journey started 7 months ago at the airport in Amsterdam. It was going to be the first time for me flying alone and living on my own and boy I was scared. I remember crying and being really sad to leave my friends and family even telling them that I was not sure if I could do this. I’m really happy and proud that I can tell the Mandy of 7 months ago that she had nothing to worry about and that a beautiful journey was waiting for her.

I call it a journey and not a destination or simply a stay since I have been through so much. I have learned a lot about myself and who I am all with the help of INTERNeX and without them I would not be the person I am today. 

It all started 2 days after I arrived here in Vancouver with the amazing Rocky Mountains trip. It was so amazing to see the beautiful nature that Canada has to offer and the beautiful blue lakes. Not only the nature was amazing but all the people that I met were wonderful.

But that was not it, as a PR-Coordinator for INTERNeX I had the opportunity to travel to Whistler, Victoria, Salt Spring Island and my biggest dream Seattle. I even had the opportunity to take a trip to Los Angeles, a city I have always dreamed of visiting. We also went to amazing events like Halloween, New Year’s Eve, the Canucks games and of course all the nice and fun PuB NiGHTS. I even celebrated Thanksgiving for the first time in my life and went Black Friday Shopping in Seattle.

But for me it does not matter how many places I visited or how many things I did, the most important thing for me is that I was able to do that with all of you! Without any of you, my journey here in Canada would not have been the same and I want to thank you for that from the bottom of my heart.

Now that it is only days away from saying goodbye I am having mixed feelings about leaving. I am really looking forward to seeing my friends and family again and to hug my sweet Labrador dog. I am looking forward to tasting my favorite Dutch dishes again but I know that my life back home will never be the same again since a piece of my heart will always stay here in Vancouver and another piece will stay with the people I have met here.
Again I wanted to thank every single one of you that have been there for me and have made my stay here unforgettable. I would also like to thank Tim and Simon for even giving me this opportunity since without them I would not have been able to experience all of these things.
For anyone reading this who is doubting whether to go away from home for such a long time I can only give you one advice…. Just do it! Trust me it will only make your life much more richer with all the life lessons you take with you when being on your own.

This is not a goodbye but a see you later! I am looking forward to seeing some of you in Sweden later this year and for the rest, we will meet each other again somewhere in the world!

PuB NiGHT Review: The Lamplighter

“But I would walk 500 miles and I would walk 500 more, just to be the man who walks a thousand miles to fall down at your door …“ I still had these lyrics in mind when waking up this morning. Why this song? Of course, one of our favourite karaoke songs at PuB NiGHT!

Before all the crazy singing started, we spent a few hours in The Lamplighter, a pub in Gastown. They offer a broad range of drinks, so everybody could choose their favourite one. Everybody just settled in, when we heard a famous voice again “It’s time for some Bourbon Bingo!”. So, everybody got sheets and daubers (really cool pens to mark your numbers) and we played some rounds. This time, I was the lucky one who managed to get a round of shots for the INTERNeX gang.

The time passed by quickly while telling stories about Salt Spring Island, but also future plans were discussed. I am always happy to see some new faces at our table, as it was the case yesterday. No matter, if someone arrived yesterday or six months ago, there are always good talks. Since half of our PR-Team is leaving soon, many of you signed the Canadian flags of Mandy and Bart. What a nice souvenir for them!

A few hours later, it was time to say hello to our well-known karaoke DJ at the Met. The papers for desired songs were filled in fast and soon old and new teams had the chance to grab the microphone. As it was Bart’s last pub night, he gave again the best to entertain the pub with his all-time favourites. I am sure your heart will go on in Vancouver, even if you cannot sing in the Met in the next weeks.

A good bye

That’s it. It started with a simple hello but now it ends with a complicated goodbye. What a great choice I made more than a year ago to come to Vancouver. The journey started in August when I arrived in this beautiful country. It seems like a couple of weeks ago, I can’t believe it is already over. Time flies by when you are having fun. I had definitely the time of my life. That’s why I am not sad because I am leaving, but I smile because it happened. I am very thankful for the great people I could experience this adventure with. Without them it wouldn’t be the same. Now it’s already time to look back at my time in Canada. And I can tell you, it was a good one.

Thanks to INTERNeX I could already spent my first weekend in the Rocky Mountains. I met such wonderful people and many friendships were made. I knew it would be beautiful, but I never expected to see such views. Wauw! The parties, campfires, the BEAUTIFUL sunset and the swims made this trip complete. After the trip I realized Canada was not my destination, but it was just the beginning of my journey.

Besides the Rockies I did many other trips and discovered a lot of new places I never heard of before. Whistler, where I did my first bungee jump ever. Victoria, where we drove on scooters to the top of the island. Seattle, where I saw its underground world and tasted the gum wall. Christmas in the Rocky Mountains. Kelowna, where we could snowboard in the sun with blue skies. And Salt Spring Island, where we partied the weekend away in our own villa. On all these trips I made so many good memories I will never forget.

The question for the upcoming Wednesdays will be: What should I do? I will definitely miss the great evenings we had every week at PuB NiGHTs. Of course the fun stories and the laughs, but what I will miss the most is the karaoke bar. I don’t know when it started, but ‘Bart’s surprise act’ was becoming a thing. You didn’t think I choose to sing Scatman, the guacamole song and Celine Dion myself, did you?

I am very happy I could work for a company like INTERNeX. Besides all the fun we had in the office, they always supported and helped me. I’ve learned a lot and my network is way bigger than 7 months ago. The best part of the job was not the part where you organize these activities, but the faces and grateful responses you get back. These activities were not so great because of the things we did, but because of the people you did those things with.

And now the time has come to say goodbye and go back to the Netherlands. I am looking forward to see my family and friends again after such a long time. But that would also mean I have to say bye to the friends (that also became family) I met here. Luckily, I don’t have to say goodbye to everyone, a simple ‘see you later’ is enough for now. Thanks to everybody who made this adventure as good as it was, Tim, Simon, the PR-guys, candidates and friends. I am very lucky I got to know people to who saying goodbye to now is so hard. I will miss all of you and I promise I will remember all the fun things we did here together. See you somewhere else in the world!

Highlights of the Year: July, August and September

July
