Alina’s First Pub Night

My very first Pub Night with the INTERNeX family!

Yesterday was my first time at Pub Night and I still can’t believe how many of you INTERNeXers were there. First of all, I want to thank you for such a warm welcome! Obviously I didn’t get the chance to talk to everyone, but I’m pretty sure I will get to know all of you shortly and I can’t wait! When I tried to take a group picture, I realized I had to take two, from each end of the table, because I couldn’t get everyone into one. 😀

So last night we went to the Beaver. It’s a really nice Pub on Granville Street, which I was told is THE street downtown to go out. And actually I was pretty impressed by how much was going on there on a Wednesday night, because where I come from it’s not common that a street is still so crowded late on a weekday. We started our evening with some food and drinks and because we became more and more people over time the waitresses had to add another table again and again.

Later at night we played bingo. I was really excited because it was a music bingo and I haven’t played it before and some of you couldn’t even wait for it to start. It was so much fun even though I didn’t even know most of the titles of the songs but others did and then we just helped each other. Great team work guys! Three of us even won a price. They got a pitcher and a shot for free. Lucky you! I definitely want to come back to the Beaver because I really want to win too. 🙂

After that a part of the group continued their night and went somewhere else afterwards, but others just headed home since they had to get up early this morning.
So a couple of us could take the same skytrain back home and this ride was a little adventure for itself. We were standing there and all of a sudden the train made an emergency stop. It was actually fun because we fell onto each other kind of like dominos. And even the door opened a little, but fortunately nothing happened and we just stopped for about a minute and then we could continue our ride. We just didn’t expect it at all. 😀
All in all I had a really fun night and I’m even more looking forward to the other Pub Nights and of course our trips on the weekends.
Furthermore, I can’t wait to get to know all of you more and spend lots of time with you guys!

So have a great day and see you soon!

Cheers,

– Alina

PuB NiGHT Review: The Two Parrots

What a night. The Two Parrots, awesome INTERNeX gang, the Yale Saloon, pool and some line dancing; what else do you need to make a boring Wednesday night into a great party night? Nothing!dav

As mentioned above we started the night gathering up at the Two Parrots which is located at Granville. Once again a lot of people showed up and we were even having some struggles fitting our huge group to the tables reserved for us. This wasn’t really a problem for us since we are not afraid to squeeze in and make some room for more people. I think there were around 20 of us all together.

When the night was coming closer to midnight our group moved the party one block away to the Yale Saloon. This time there was a pretty big group of us still at the Yale. Sadly for us the legendary bull was not in use ☹ We still managed to find out other things to do. We were playing pool and at some point there was a line dancing course happening at the dance floor. For most of us it was the first time learning line dancing but I bet we will be pros in that in the end of the summer!

Once again it was nice to hang at the Yale since our group was basically the only one present. It almost felt like a private party. I feel like Yale is becoming a tradition for the INTERNeX gang on Wednesdays. We will see what happens. Although the night was awesome and everyone had fun it was time to say goodbye to Jesper since this pub night was his last one. We will miss you Jesper!

Tomorrow is Game Night time! Make sure to show up to the office at 6pm to join for some fun games ☺

PuB NiGHT Review: The Beaver Bar

As always, Wednesday nights are PuB NiGHTs with INTERNeX. And as always, we had a good time with our candidates. But, what exactly were we up to? Well, we went to the Beaver Bar at Granville once more.

If you have never been to the Beaver Bar, here are some basic facts:

  • It’s part of the Samesun Hostel
  • It has cheap beers and good food
  • The service is great
  • Wednesday night = Bingo night!

So yes, we played Bingo once more! And the Beaver Bar does not just have the basic and normal Bingo with numbers. No. They have music Bingo! From Darude’s Sandstorm to Jason Derulo’s Whatcha Say, we heard it all. It’s quite a nice mix of old and new songs. But sometimes, 99% of the candidates didn’t know a song at all. In those moments, we looked at Matt with big eyes, the candidate who never left Vancouver. He’s a big music fan, so he knows all of the songs. And so, we played several round of this music Bingo. And people, you won’t believe this, BUT: the INTERNeX crew won 3 times! Yes, you read that right! After all the PuB NiGHTs with not a single Bingo winner, we can proudly name 3 candidates as winners. So, congratulations Liam, Samuel and Antonia! I hope you enjoyed your shot and pitchers of beer.

Around 11:30pm, most candidates decided it’s best to go home. They are responsible young adults that need a good rest in order to work well the next day. How I admire that, especially since I was in bed at 2am.

It was great to see you all there! I’m looking forward to see some of you again this Friday at the baseball game!

Fun Fact Friday

Hello and welcome to another blog post of Fun Fact Friday! This is the time when we share facts with you that you (hopefully) do not know yet about Vancouver. Personally, I’ve been here for 3 months and I did not know many basic facts about Vancouver. Until now! I’ve googled myself smart and would like to share the most interesting and fun facts I found with you.

The lovely city we are living in is named after the British explorer Captain George Vancouver. He sailed into this area in 1792 and he – surprisingly – hated it here when he first arrived. I could not figure out why he did so, but I’m quite sure he would love the Vancouver we are living in today! (How could he not, am I right?!). And although Vancouver was discovered in 1792, it was incorporated only in 1886. This makes it a very young city. 123-year-old, to be exact. 1886 is actually the same year that Coca-Cola was founded in. Funny, huh? And Canada was the first country outside the United States where Coca-Cola was bottled in.

But here’s the twist with the name: before 1886, so in the 1870’s, Vancouver was actually called Granville. Crazy, right? So, during the incorporation they chose the name Vancouver to honour it’s discoverer George Vancouver.

But that is not the only city that had a change with the name. North Vancouver was not always North Vancouver. It used to be called Moodyville. Not a very attractive name, I must say. But it was named after Sewell Moody who established the Moodyville Sawmill in 1865. He also helped creating the first European settlement on Burrard Inlet.

I hope you enjoyed my new found wisdom. Have a great weekend!

PuB NiGHT Review: The Bottleneck

‘How many Oscars won the film The Shape of Water?’ No clue? Neither did we. With this and more difficult questions, we had to deal yesterday night during our pub night at The Bottleneck. So today, we are a bit smarter than yesterday.

The Bottleneck is a small bar in the middle of the entertainment street Granville. It is quite hidden, so you have to watch out to find the entrance. Suddenly, the pub was quickly filled with motivated players for the ‘Get Smarty Trivia’, which is hosted every Wednesday at the Bottleneck. Even though we tried to figure out the answers in teamwork, it was really hard! Many of them were American focused, but at least we could proudly name the neighbour countries of Luxembourg. All in all, the trivia was a fun mix of film, music, history and cultural questions.

After all the questions were asked, we handed our creative answers to our neighbours and we got to know the solutions. And we won a prize! For being the second last, but a prize is a prize, so we were happy about it. Until we tried our free winner drinks … We all had never seen a drink like this before. A Canadian speciality called ‘Bloody Caesar’ includes vodka, clamato juice, Worcestershire and Tabasco. And because this combination is not weird enough, you get pickled asparagus, celery, chirozo, prawn and beet on top! We had quite a hard time to finish those drinks. Respect, Canadians!

Oh and by the way, The Shape of Water won 4 Oscars 😉

See you on Sunday for a relaxed stroll on Granville Island!
