How was your weekend?

There it finally was: our big camping trip to lonely Vargas Island!

Vargas BlogIt started off Friday morning at Horseshoe Bay from where we took the ferry to Vancouver Island. After a short snack (or better schnack) break, we headed to Nanaimo located on the other side of the island. Even though it rained pretty hard when we arrived in Tofino, everyone was ready and excited for the adventure. So, we packed all our gear for the next two days on a small water taxi boat and after a 15-minute ride, we reached our destination: Vargas Island!

And there we were: 11 people with a bunch of gear standing on a beach on a lonely island, in the rain, watching the water taxi driver leave. Time to get active – building up tents, setting up a tarp and collecting firewood. Well, lighting up wet wood was not that easy. But our man of fire Euler was hungry and managed to get the fire started. Yeah, our barbecue was saved! Meanwhile, a crew of architects built up a tarp, so we had a place to stay without getting soaked. We spent the night staring at the campfire, eating our hotdogs and being proud of our constructions. But before everyone could crawl into the tents, we cleaned up our campsite. All food had to be stored in a food locker some metres away from the tents. This, to make our home as less attractive to wolves as possible. To be fair, the start of our trip has been a challenge, but our teamwork made it all work perfectly. Good job, guys!

I woke up on Saturday morning with the satisfying sound of someone smashing wood like crazy. Satisfying, because that sound meant there was a chance of dry wood, which meant an easy fire start and fire meant coffee. With a great team effort, our man of fire and some patience, we managed to get hot water for coffee and ‘tea wotah’ for our English man. Even Nutella was offered on the buffet – it was actually a glamping trip! As the weather forecast predicted, it stopped raining and we could finally see the neighbour islands. Really pretty!

The guys spent the morning in the island-gym, which included smashing wood in all kinds sdrof creative ways. Good side effect of this workout was that we didn’t have to worry about firewood for the night anymore. After lunch, it was time to explore the island. We left our home beach, hoping we could find a hiking trail. What seemed like a trail, made us end up at a cabin that looked like a horror movie scene. We continued our way along some animal traps, under fallen trees and over stones and reached some beautiful spots. After all photo shoots were done, we returned to our basecamp. The sun was out, so we played some games at the beach and the bravest ones of us even went swimming! Later on, we could spot some sea lions passing by our coast. Burgers and potatoes were on the menu for dinner, so we enjoyed those and the beautiful view.

The evening passed by quickly with games, s’mores (yes, glamping) and loads of laughs. Suddenly, someone came back from the ‘washroom’ and noticed ‘wow, there are lots of stars out here.’ And yes, he was right! I think I have never seen a sky like this before. So we were just standing at the beach, looking up to the sky and getting excited for every shooting star that we could spot. That was just a perfect ending of the day.

On Sunday, we woke up early to get our breakfast out of the food locker and to break
down our camp. Everything was packed just before the water taxi came to pick us up again. We enjoyed the sunny ride back to Tofino, where we packed all our stuff in the cars again. Then, we headed to the beach. Our instructors were already waiting for us, NOVATEK CAMERAready to introduce us to the world of surfing! During a three-hour lesson, we learned how to get on the board and catch the best waves. At the end, some even managed to stand on the board like they never did anything else before. It was really fun! After this exhausting morning, we enjoyed lunch in Tofino and evaluated the weekend. Everyone’s favorite moment? Difficult to say, because there were so many good ones. Then, it was already time to head back to Nanaimo, where we took the ferry back to Vancouver.

It was a great weekend – I enjoyed this adventure with an amazing group to the fullest! A big thanks to all of you who joined and especially to our drivers Rick and Matt.

Catch up on some sleep guys and I will see you on Wednesday at Malone’s!

PR-team Adventures

Bowen Island is a cute little island, which you can reach by ferry from the Horseshoe bay terminal. It is great for hiking, touring and for water activities. About two weeks ago I decided to go to Bowen Island again, as I already did a hike there, I decided to go on a little adventure on the water this time.

We went on a Tuesday, as kayaking is two for the price of one on this day. This is also the case for double kayaks, but then you are paying half the price. We didn’t look up the schedule, as I thought that the ferry would go every hour. However, the hour we arrived they had a break and skipped one hour, which meant that we had to wait for quite a while.

20597183_10209637728721006_5804068957476516703_nAs it was great weather, we decided to sit on the upper deck, so we could see all the surroundings during our journey to Bowen Island. I always like to be on a ferry, as it gives me a feeling that I am having a boat tour. Besides that, the views in Vancouver never get old.

Once we arrived at Bowen Island, we immediately went to the kayak rental. The first few minutes they explained us how to kayak and then we could finally start our adventure. I was really glad that my boyfriend already did kayaking beforehand, which was also the reason why he had to go on the spot in the back. Here you need to give all the directions to the kayak.

In the beginning my arms were hurting all the time, but after a while I got over the pain and could fully enjoy the activity and the surroundings. We went all the way to the top of the island and back. On our way we saw a lot of other people who did kayaking and also saw the ferry pass a few times.

As we got more comfortable with kayaking, we started singing together. Sometimes we embarrassed ourselves a bit, as we were singing some really bad songs. However, it made it way more fun. We already reached the top of the island pretty fast and therefore we took it a bit slower on our way back. In this way we could really take in the beautiful views that we had from our kayak.

After our adventure we tried to find a chocolate shop that my roommate recommended, but unfortunately all the shops at Bowen Island closes at 5 PM already and so was the chocolate shop. Then we decided to go back to Vancouver again.

I hope to talk to you about all your adventures from this weekend tonight at PuB NiGHT!

Review: Bowen Island Trip

Yesterday we went on our monthly trip to Bowen Island! We met up at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal at 9:30 AM, which was really early after the party the night before. We all bought our tickets and got on the boat to the island that would leave at 10 AM.

When we arrived on the island we first went to the visitor centre. It was a small cute house on the side of the road with lots of maps and business cards of businesses on the island. The woman that was there told us about hiking trails and beautiful places on the island to see.

18446992_10155296361297103_7988025318680079715_n.jpgAs some of us wanted to go on a scooter drive around the island they called the company and there were still scooters left! We walked one street up and waited for the woman to come and give us the scooters. We first got a whole demo on how to use a scooter, because one of us had never driven one before. After the demo, signing the waivers and paying we finally started our drive over the island. First we went to the lighthouse beach and relaxed there for a little while. Then we went to the golf club to see the other side of the island. After that we went to Killarney lake and made some beautiful pictures. As we had still time left on our scooters we followed the road further and saw the third side of the island. It was amazing to drive through the rainforest and see the whole island on the scooters.

18518404_10155296361302103_5384719679776982194_o.jpgThe other group decided to go for a hike to Killarney lake instead. As it did not take long to get to the lake and it was going so much faster than expected, we decided to go around the lake as well. The nature along the way was amazing. You could really see the rain forest climate back on the island, as it was wet everywhere and you could see so much green. After a while it was time to eat something, so we stopped along the way and found a nice spot next to the water. When we all filled our stomaches, we had enough energy to continue our journey and went to the next recommendation. We followed the Kallarney creek trail to the Bridal Falls and fish ladder, where we made some beautiful pictures. Our last stop on the hike was the rock next to the lagoon. Here you had a great viewing point over the lagoon and the island.

After hiking and driving the scooter we all met up close to the ferry terminal and had some rest on the grass. A few of us took the 4 PM boat back, as they still had to take the bus back from Horseshoe Bay for quite a long time. Others relaxed or had some food, and stayed for one more hour.

We had an amazing day and we hope you all did too! Thank you for joining us!

Experience IT Review – Lighthouse Park

Last weekend we went to Lighthouse Park! It was really beautiful and great to explore the park with you guys! Thank you!

Lighthouse Park is a park in West Vancouver. It is one of the most amazing scenic parks on the West Coast. There are lots of douglas firs and you can stand next to those giant trees. You can hike on lots of trails in the park and there are lots of amazing viewing points.

18361253_10209461065385627_85185842_n.jpgWe first started walking on one of the trails and got to a viewing point that showed us the sea and behind that the skyline of Vancouver. It was really amazing to see. Then we went to the lighthouse viewing point where we sat down. We had some lunch and enjoyed the great weather. After that we went on another trail trying to get closer to the lighthouse. We couldn’t get closer, but we did find a viewing point where we could see the whole lighthouse! We went on an adventure on the big rocks that were there and made some amazing pictures.

After 3 hours in the park we took the bus to Horseshoe Bay to get a coffee at Starbucks and enjoy the sun and view there.

I had an amazing day with all of you!! Hope to see you on the next PuB NiGHT!

Picture of the week

Hi everyone,

The picture of this week is made at Bowen Island. This is a small Island in Vancouver, 20 minutes away from Horseshoe Bay if you take the ferry. I went  with my sister to Bowen Island, to do some hiking! it is very beautiful and the people are very friendly!

Interesting facts:

– There live only 3,501 people on the Island.
– The main activities that you can do on the Island are Kayaking, Golfing, Hiking, and cycling.
– It is save to hike on the Island, because there are no bears!
– The people who live on the Island are always willing enough to pull over and pick up tourists who are hiking.
– At the Island are no lampposts, therefore the inhabitants use flashlights in the nights.

Do you have a great picture? Yes? You can send your picture to pr@internexcanada.com. The best picture will be posted as ‘picture of the week’ and the maker of this picture will win a great price!

Cheers, Lydia
