INTERNeX Canada: PuB NiGHT Review!

Have you ever tried playing Jenga at a pub? Well neither have I…that is until last night when we all gathered at Doolin’s Irish pub for our weekly meeting 😉  Do you know how nerve-racking it is playing Jenga?! It was still really fun though!

Probably the best part of the night was when we were playing Battle of the Sexes! It was so much fun, except for the fact that there weren’t enough girls so some of the guys had to join the girls team. Unfortunately in the end, the guys team won. But I want a REMATCH. Where are all the girls when you need them? C’mon! There was a question that was asked, “where is the forbidden city located?” to which I answered ‘Vegas’….but the real answer was ‘Beijing’…oops! And now everyone is after me!

And also throughout the night, people kept guessing the amount of chocolate eggs in the jar. Some people went far as to coming up with math formulas and calculations and all that stuff. But the winner in the end was…*drumroll*…Rie! She guessed 220 and the actual amount was 222 (just two numbers off!). I wish I could have guessed.

You all know how much I love the Morrissey pub, but I actually didn’t mind trying a new place this week. And I got to say, Doolin’s Irish Pub was pretty awesome! It  has a very welcoming atmosphere and the music wasn’t too loud so we could talk. And of course the waitresses were friendly as well. But if you’re going to order food there, do NOT order their cheesy bread.

That’s it for now! If you didn’t make it last night, don’t miss out next week for even more awesome games and prizes! For those of you going to the Rockies next week, you should definitely come out because we will be going over some important information about the trip! 🙂

Important Notice

As some of you may know, an incident occurred at one of our partner’s staff residences in Jasper, Alberta on Saturday, July 17, 2010.

On Saturday evening at 11:20 p.m. the employee house exploded, causing all 10 people in the residence to be injured. The cause of the explosion is still under investigation but it is suspected that the cause was a gas or propane leak. Unfortunately, two INTERNeX program participants were working and residing at this location at the time, both of which were hospitalized.

One of our participants was released on Monday with relatively minor injuries, while the other remains in hospital with non-life threatening injuries; she has a good prognosis. INTERNeX, our partner organization, the hotel and the consulate are all working together to manage the situation as best we can.

We ask you all to give your thoughts and best wishes to all of the injured and wish all of our candidates a safe stay in Canada.

Candidate Exposé

Meet Gudrun, a young mind from Germany who is ready to conquer anything Canada throws her way. I first met Gudrun at the INTERNeX office a few weeks ago, and then again at INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! We chatted for awhile about her internship and how she was enjoying her time spent in Canada. She was so interesting to talk to, I thought I would ask her to share more about her experiences so far.

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Canada was my destination of choice as I decided I would like to spend time in an English speaking country and Vancouver has a reputation for being innovative and very keen on sports. I think living and working overseas is an important learning/life experience and in today’s global society, it is getting more and more important to gain a more international perspective.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
INTERNeX is in collaboration with my German organization, which arranged everything for me.

What program are you currently participating in?
I’m doing an unpaid internship!

Do you like program offered by INTERNeX?
Yes, I think they offer many different kinds of options, so anybody will find the right program.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy learning a lot about the structure and work processes within the company. It’s great to have the opportunity to work unsupervised and to display initiative.

What skills do you use at work?
I use my computer skills along with my verbal and written English language skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
You have to experience Canada yourself, but I would recommend Canada to anybody. It seems to be a country with lots of international influences and many opportunities, regarding sports, culture, nature, shopping and sightseeing… and the Canadians are all very friendly and open-minded.

Can you sum up your experience in 10 words or less?
Vancouver is awesome, I’ve enjoyed every minute so far!

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
There is still so much to do, but I’ve been to Seattle already, I also enjoyed Stanley Park and the Aquarium, Granville Island, The Capilano Suspension Bridge and of course some pubs in Downtown.

What are your plans for the future?
After my internship I want to travel first before I’m going back to Germany. Afterwards I will either apply for a new job or doing my PhD. I haven’t decided yet.

Not sure which program is for you? Visit for more information on how INTERNeX can make your trip to Canada happen!
