How was your Weekend?

I hope all of you had a good weekend – I for sure had (thanks for asking ;-)) On Saturday the INTERNeX-family went to Granville island and we were actually quite lucky with the weather as we had sunshine most of the time.

We met at Yaletown-Roundhouse Station, from where we walked to the aquabus dock. I already guessed before we even started our trip that our ride with the aquabus is going to be exciting and now I can confirm my statement. We had such a good view on the skyline and Granville Island. We got picked up at the dock by a little colourful boat and it took us only approximately 7 minutes to get to the island. So this was a really good start for our trip.

img_5629Once we got there we walked straight into the public market, where lots of food was waiting for us. It was overwhelming. There was one stand next to the other and they had such a variety of food – cheese, fish, meat, fruits, vegetables, ice-cream,… One thing for sure, no one has to starve in there and will find something to eat or drink.

img_5632But we actually weren’t too hungry so there was just one thing we tried out. I already got the hint from Tim in advance that we HAVE to try out “salmon candy”. It’s a smoked salmon lacquered with maple syrup. You might be thinking, that it sounds really really weird and well, all of us thought exactly the same 😀 But we could bring ourselves to try it out and to be fair, it wasn’t too bad. It just tasted like salmon and while chewing you get this kinda sweet taste. So we’re glad we tried it!

Besides all that food there were so many more shops to look at. We wandered through some souvenir shops and a chocolate one (which I wanted to check out mostly because I was hoping for some free samples to try but I got disappointed. At least it smelled yummy!).

Afterwards we walked along the waterfront and made an enforced stop under a roof since it started raining/snowing (can’t tell what exactly it was) all of a sudden. So we sat down at a table and had a really nice chat.

All in all we had a fun day with loads of food and great views! Thanks for coming!

New “Kid” and PR Coordinator on the Blog!

This week there’s one new “kid” joining the INTERNeX family and it’s me, Alina. I’m going to be the new PR Coordinator for INTERNeX. I’m so happy to finally be here in Vancouver and already had a really warm welcome.

My studies brought me to Canada because we get the chance to do a practicum for 5 months. As I’m studying tourism and travel management, I thought it would be a great opportunity to complete it in a different country. In addition to that I was already able to gain amazing experiences abroad while working as an AuPair in New Zealand 3 years ago. IMG_0745

I chose Canada as a destination because I’ve never been to North America before and I’ve already heard and seen so much about it, so I wanted to convince myself of it’s inherent natural beauty.

I can’t wait to organize Pub Nights and all other exciting events and trips. As probably all of you, I’m really looking forward to discover Canada’s nature and I’m most excited for the Rocky Mountains. Another thing on my to-do list is watching a hockey match, since I have been playing field hockey back in Germany.

I’m pretty sure we’re all having an unforgettable and amazing time here together and I can’t wait to get to know you guys and see what’s on your travel bucket list.

So I hope to see you all for Pub Night at the Beaver on Wednesday! 🙂

Cheers,

– Alina

New “Kids” on the Blog

It’s amazing to see so many new candidates arriving at the beginning of the year – this week we welcome Laura and Merle from Germany to the INTERNeX community. Great to have you both here with us!!

Laura, who is 22 and studies Business Law in good old Germany, came to Vancouver because of friend’s recommendations. She is part of our Practicum Program and excited for gaining international experience in her field of interest. Besides that, her goal is to improve her English skills by simply having to speak in English at her placement. In terms of travelling, Laura, wants to discover Vancouver Island and Seattle.IMG_0701Merle, who is 18 and from the high North of Germany is also part of our Practicum program and just graduated from High School. It was important to her, just like all her friends, to travel abroad for some time, but especially doing this on her own. She is fascinated by Canada and its nature and therefore, no surprise that the Rocky Mountains are on top of her travel bucket list. But also Vancouver Island and the great combination of Vancouver’s beaches and mountains is something she would like to explore. Apart from that, Merle also wants to talk a lot of English to improve her skills.

Great times ahead of you guys, have a wonderful start here in Vancouver and we’d love to see you at tomorrow’s Pub Night at the Stanley Park Brewery. I’m stoked^^.

Cheers,

– Felicitas

New “Kids” on the Blog

We are happy to announce many more Newcomers this week: Welcome Anne-Sophie, Nina, Niels and Marco!!

Anne-Sophie made all her way from Belgium to us. As a marketing student, she is looking forward to her marketing practicum and her time in Canada, a country that was recommended to her by friends and her university. For she is already an expert in Dutch and French, she’s in the perfect spot to perfect her English skills. But of course she is also excited for all the great nature this beautiful country has to offer and would like to travel to Vancouver Island, go snowboarding and see some Hockey games. Not to forget Anne-Sophie is super excited to meet lots of internationals – well, this is the best city to do that Anne-Sophie!

Niels, also from Belgium, is from the same university as Anne-Sophie and became interested in Vancouver during a Botswana trip. When he spent some time with internationals during his trip, he asked in the group what the greatest city was they ever went to and 6 of them replied: “Vancouver!” :D. So an easy choice for Niels who is also here for a practicum and is interested in travelling to the Rocky Mountains (he definitely wants to see a bear during his time here) and spend some time whale watching. Just like Anne-Sophie he is excited for snowboarding and watching Hockey games. Not to forget, he’d like to visit Stanley Park and compare the scenery of today to the pictures of when he was three years old and visiting the park with his family. Sounds like a great endeavour with lots to explore.

Another one of our newcomers is Nina from Germany. She’s staying in a homestay in Surrey where she is volunteering there in an animal shelter. Being concerned with Canada as her dream destination, she was especially motivated to come here because of the mentality of the people, but also for working on her English skills. As a biology student, she’s going to have a great time at the shelter in Surrey, which focuses on scientific approaches analysing and monitoring animal behaviour. Nina would also like to travel to the Rocky Mountains and see Banff National Park, Seattle and – of course – some Hockey games.

Last but not least, we welcomed Marco from Austria this week. He is also volunteering in the same domestic animal shelter as Nina in Surrey and will also be based there in a host family. He mentioned that he had always been amazed by Canada and the vast nature our beautiful country has to offer, which made him come here eventually. Just like the others, he is also excited to travel around and, how could it be any different, watch Hockey games. Seems like you guys should make some plans for that right away. 🙂

Great to welcome you all, have a wonderful start here in Vancouver and we’d love to see you at tonight’s Pub Night at Malone’s Social Lounge and Taphouse!!

Cheers,

– Felicitas

New “Kid” on the Blog

Another week, another new candidate arrived:

Welcome Louise!!

Louise flew all the way into Vancouver last Saturday from Denmark. She is 21 years old and aspires to become a vet. Before diving deep into her studies, she decided to spend 6 months in Canada and gain some experience in domestic – but also wildlife rescue and rehabilitation with two of our stations in Surrey, as well as on beautiful Vancouver Island. It’s her greatest passion to work with animals and she couldn’t be more excited to start her volunteering experience with us.
IMG_0494
For she has family located in Surrey, and is convinced that Canada is the place that she
fits in best apart from her home country, it was an easy choice for her to come here. Louise is interested in travelling around and experiencing the stunning nature that BC has to offer. Yet, she has no concrete plans yet. I am sure, however, you guys can team up with her to make some plans. 😉

Great to have you with us Louise, let the fun begin!!

Have a great week and hope to see y’all for Pub Night at the Old Spaghetti Factory tomorrow! ☺

Cheers!

– Felicitas
