How was the weekend?

This weekend was so amazing! Let me tell you what happened.

Let’s start with Friday. I went to another Vancouver Canucks game, this time they played against the Arizona Coyotes. The atmosphere and the people cheering for the Canucks were amazing. The team performed well in this game and won 4-0. One of the highlights was that the actress Cobie Smulders, who plays Robin Scherbatsky in the world famous sitcom “How I met your mother” was in the Rogers Arena to watch the game. When it comes to food I recommend the Nacho & Hotdog combination, trust me it’s so good! Hockey is a very special thing for Canadians, so be sure to check out one game while you’re here!

On Saturday, we had another great event for some of the Internexers. We went together in cooperation with Moose Travel Network to Joffre Lakes which is located in the north of Pemberton in British Columbia. We went for a hike with a group of 12. The first stop was at the lower lake of the three lakes we were about to see. It was beautiful with the mountains in the background and the sun shining through the leaves. Approximately one hour later after some steps and steep parts of the hike we arrived at the Middle Joffre Lake. There we saw even more beautiful scenery and landscape. The clear blue turquoise water and the trees around it in combination with the sun gives you a real Canadian wild life experience, which was amazing. There were even some super cute birds that would come and sit on your hand if you extended your arm. Not a moment that you experience often in your life! The trail guides you to the next sight of the hike which were the amazing Holloway Falls in the middle of the forest. After seeing the falls we completed the hike with the view of the third Upper Joffre Lake which was just breathtaking! Sitting on the rocks we had our lunch break, amazed by the beauty of nature! Some of us went even further down the trail to the point were the glacier of Mount Matier meets the water of the lake. We even learned why the lakes are so turquoise. The melting and rubbing of the glacier ice on the rocks of the mountains create a thing which is called rock powder. When the rock powder mixes with the melting water from the glacier and the sun shines through the water it reflects the sun and thus creates the turquoise colour. How amazing is that? As we hiked back we took many photos and got picked up again by our bus driver. What an amazing day!

Since in Canada Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 10th of October and many of the candidates got their own Thanksgiving at home in their hostfamilies, we thought about making our own INTERNeX Thanksgiving at the Kitsilano Beach with a potluck and a traditional turkey on Sunday. We had food like casseroles, chips with guacamole, salads, snacks, desserts, bread, turkey with stuffing, vegetables and other tasty things. We gathered with about 25 people and played some games, e.g. Kubb, soccer, basketball, volleyball and some card games. Everyone had so much fun and we celebrated the Thanksgiving all together, which was so amazing! Also the location at the Kitsilano Beach was great, together with the sunny weather you couldn’t tell if it’s summer in July or Thanksgiving in October. All in all it was an amazing event with lots of fun and laughs throughout the day.

To conclude, I can say that the whole weekend was packed with lots of fun events!

Let me know about your past weekend, or your plans for the upcoming one!

See you at PubNight,

Tino =)

What to Do in Vancouver?

New week new “What to Do in Vancouver” inspirations 🙂

What is Canada without hiking? Do not miss the chance to explore the beautiful hiking trails in the Vancouver area. In this blogpost I will give you some insight into the huge variety of hiking trails with amazing views and the most beautiful nature you have ever seen.

Grouse Grind, Grouse Mountain:

If you fancy a hiking trip right on your doorstep take the Seabus to North Vancouver or a bus ride over the famous Lions Gate bridge to start your adventure on Grouse Grind. It’s a 3-kilometre trail to the top of Grouse Mountain.

From my own experience I can say that this is very exhausting but definitely worthwhile. The view over the city on top of the mountain is unbelievable.
Additionally, have a look at how fast some people have climbed this mountain – there’s a list on top it’s kind of crazy.

Lynn Canyon Park & Suspension Bridge:

This Park features several hiking trails in addition to the main attraction, Lynn Canyon Suspension bridge. It’s smaller than the famous Suspension bridge but it’s free and a beautiful place which is definitely worth a visit. There are trails suitable for every hiking level so just find your perfect trail and enjoy. It’s also a nice opportunity to spend your day in the refreshing 30-foot pool; a nice spot for swimming, having a picnic and of course taking a lot of pictures. There’s a lot more to discover, but you’d better explore it yourself. 😉

Quarry Rock Hike in Deep Cove:

This trail starting in Deep Cove at the Baden Powell trailhead is a really popular hike in North Vancouver and definitely a place where you’ll meet a lot of tourists from all over the world. It’s around 4 kilometers long so it is possible for most hikers. Even if it’s a slightly shorter hike the view leaves nothing to be desired. On this all-season hike you’ll have an amazing view of Indian Arm (that’s why it’s sometimes called Indian Arm Lookout Trail).

St Mark’s Summit:

As a part of the Howe Sound Crest Trail this 11km round trip hiking trail gives you the opportunity to take a longer walk (around 5 hours) and experience Canada’s amazing nature while enjoying spectacular views of e.g. Howe Sound. So, if you’re ready for a more challenging hiking trail; this is certainly a good option.

Joffre Lakes Provincial Park:

Maybe you’re thinking about which trail you have seen on the countless pictures with the crystal-clear blue lakes on Instagram? That’s definitely Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.

For this hike you should plan more time, like a whole day, since it is a bit further away from Vancouver and you need a car. It’s one of British Columbia’s most beautiful hikes where you can pass and discover all three beautiful lakes in one trail.

Hope you will enjoy your hiking trips when you get to Canada. 🙂

How was your weekend?

Unfortunately weekend is over, but let´s have a look on what we did the last few days. On Friday afternoon we enjoyed the good weather by going to Kitsilano beach. It was warm enough to wear swim wear and many people also went into the cold water. In the evening there was an amazing sunset and it was quite cool to watch it on one of the longest days of the year.

On Saturday we booked a trip to the Joffre lakes. Although it was a three hours drive to get there from Vancouver it was definitely worth it. The bus driver told us that the lower Joffre lake is the most boring one but already this lake was very clear and turquoise. However, we decided to hike the steep way up to the Middle Joffre lake. When we saw the blue color sparkling through the woods we knew we arrived. The bus driver was so right, because the Lower Joffre lake was nothing against the Middle one. The light blue water seemed so surreal. After making a short break and taking some pictures, we started to hike to the last aim: the Upper Joffre lake. On our way we came by the Holloway Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this region. The upper Joffre lake was just as turquoise as the Middle Lake and we decided to stay there for a while. While we ate our cookies some small birds joined us and so we had the idea to take some pictures with them. After that we unfortunately had to get back to our bus, but overall it was an amazing experience, that I can definitely recommend!

On Sunday we went shopping in the Metropolis Mall in Metrotown. It is pretty nice there and we all found something to buy. In the afternoon unfortunately we weren´t able to do our INTERNeX-BBQ at the beach, because the weather forecast predicted rain on Sunday. Instead of it we went to WhiteSpot, which is a typical Canadian burger restaurant to get something to eat there. We all enjoyed the good food! After it we wanted to visit the Jazz festival at the Robson Square, but unfortunately it was already closed. However, we experienced so much this weekend that we had nothing against going home.

Thanks to those who joined us at the WhiteSpot! I hope to see you at the PubNight on Wednesday!

How was your weekend?

The weekend is behind us, so let’s take a look at what we did this weekend.

IMG_3030

On Sunday we went on a trip to Joffre Lakes. We left Vancouver at around 8 in the morning in our own bus, which was great as we could listen to our own music. On our way, we stopped at Shannon Falls, which is the third highest waterfall in British Columbia. Thus, you can imagine, that it was quite impressive. On our way to Joffre Lakes, our guide, Corey, pointed out some interesting facts along the way. For example, did you know, that the McDonald’s in Squamish is the busiest McDonald’s in British Columbia?

It was a sunny day, so we had the perfect hiking conditions when we arrived at Joffre Lakes. The Lower Joffre Lake, was close to the parking lot, so we were able to get there within 5 minutes. It was nice and peaceful. After a few minutes we headed towards the Middle Joffre Lake, which was 3 km away. I think, I can speak for most of us, that this was the hardest part of the hike. Not only was the hike 3 km long, but it was difficult due to the extreme incline. So by the time we reached the Middle Joffre Lake, we were a bit exhausted. At this lake, we had our lunch break and enjoyed the amazing view of the blue water of the lake.

Afterwards, we headed to the Upper Joffre Lake, which thankfully wasn’t too far away. On the way there we saw an amazing waterfall from up close. At the Upper Joffre Lake, we were happy to see that it wasn’t frozen. Again, we had a spectacular view and we seized the opportunity to take more amazing pictures. The hike back down was a lot easier.

On our drive back from Joffre Lakes, we stopped at Whistler for a dinner break. It was cool that we were able to see Whistler Village on this trip as well. After our delicious dinner we headed back to Vancouver. But we had to make one quick stop on the side of the highway for the scenic view. By 8:15 pm we were back in Vancouver.

Overall it was a great trip, even though it was a little exhausting at times. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Thanks to everyone who joined!

Have a good day and see you on Wednesday at Pub NiGHT!

Candidate Exposé – Danielle Struijk

Danielle Struijk1I’m Danielle, I’m 22 years old and I come from The Netherlands. I am studying International Event Management at the NHTV in Breda. My internship here is part of my study program to finish my third year.

I decided to come to Canada because I love travelling and I have always wanted to go abroad at some point in my life, so when I got the opportunity to do that for my study I knew this was the time to do it. I didn’t really mind where I would go, so I searched for a company instead of a country.

At my university they have a database with vacancies and that is also where I found the one for being a PR-coordinator at Internex. So now I am doing the practicum program since I had to do an Internship for my university.

I’m a PR coordinator for INTERNeX. It’s an awesome company to work for. I get to do a Danielle Struijk (words)lot of stuff and besides my daily tasks I have projects that are challenging. The atmosphere in the office is really great and they don’t make me feel like an intern, but like I’m really a part of the team. They are always open to teaching me whatever I want to know. Here you need to be an open and social person, since you have to deal with a lot of candidates that come and go. You also need to be structured to know what is going on when. As I mentioned before it is for my university program and I have definitely learned things here that will help me in my future career. That included social media management, sales, video production and Photoshop.

Here I’m living in a house with 5 other people. We have a guy from England who is kind of our landlord, and 4 girls from Australia, Ireland, Netherlands and Canada. I found it through Roomster, a platform where people offer rooms.

When I arrived I first took a cab to the Airbnb I had booked, that was around 5 PM. I remember sitting in that cab and looking out the window thinking how different it looked from back home. At night Tess and I wanted to get some dinner and we passed trough East Hastings on our way there. In that very moment I was asking myself what in the world I was doing here and how I would ever survive the next 7 months. We got dinner, went back to the Airbnb and went to sleep. The next day the sun was shining and I felt very happy being there.

As a PR coordinator it is my job to organize the activities, pub nights, trips and events, so therefore I attend them as much as possible. But I feel very lucky to be able to organize and attend all the events. I have gotten to know so many amazing people from all over the world because of it. If I would ever go abroad again I would definitely try to find an organization like INTERNeX to go with.

Danielle Struijk3I’ve done so much here it’s insane. I’ve been to Granville Island, saw the Chinese New Year Parade, went skiing on Cypress, saw a Junior Hockey game, a Canucks game and the Whitecaps. I’ve been to Metrotown, Queen Elizabeth Park, FlyOver Canada, Joffre Lakes, Stanley Park and Deep Cove. I’ve been to the John Legend concert at Rogers Arena, a boat party and experienced St. Patricks day. I went to Kelowna to go skiing and do a wine tour. Went to Kamloops to visit my aunt. To Whistler where I went bungee jumping. Spend 4 days in The Rockies, which were amazing. Visited Vancouver Island with my mother, sister and boyfriend. Rented a scooter to explore Bowen Island and went to Squamish with my group of friends. I’m still going to Kelowna, Seattle and The Rockies again!

What I really like about Vancouver is that there is always something to do. There has never been a weekend where I have been bored. What I love about Canada is the nature. There is so much to see here and I’ve had amazing views. Vancouver is an expensive place to live though, so as a student it can be challenging at times to manage my budget right.

It is really hard choosing my most memorable thing here in Canada. I’ve done so many great things and I’ve had some amazing nights with my friends here. I guess my favourite was our trip to the Rockies and my boyfriend coming over as a surprise.

This trip definitely inspired me to travel more. Before I always used to be scared to go abroad, but this experience has really shown me that everything is possible. I have so many places and people that I want to visit all over the world.

The first I will do when I am back home is EAT! I’m looking forward to eating all the amazing Dutch food. I’m also looking forward to seeing my family, boyfriend and friends again.

– Danielle
