INTERNeX Canada: Top Canadian Google Searches of 2012

Google is probably the place I go to when I need an answer for anything. In this day and age, we don’t go to the doctors anymore when we are sick or open an actual dictionary to look up the meaning of a word. If there’s something we don’t understand? We turn on our laptop or our iPhone and Google has the answer.

Recently, Google Canada revealed what the most popular Canadian searches of 2012 were and you might find some answers rather surprising or not! It’s kind of cool to see what kind of things, news or people were searched by Canadians in this year!

The Top Trending searches (new searches with the highest amount of traffic) of the year was Pinterest, which is a photo sharing social media website, with Hurricane Sandy and the London Olympics to follow.

Our very own Prime Minister, Stephen Harper was the most searched Canadian Politician, as he should be and is followed by Justin Trudeau, who is a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party and the son of Pierre Trudeau, the late former Prime Minister of Canada.

Not surprisingly, the top most searched Canadian Musician, remains to be Justin Bieber with Carly Rae Jepsen following in third place. She has been well-known in Canada for quite some time after placing third in the television show “Canadian Idol” in 2007, but she only became famous outside of Canada after Justin tweeted about her earlier this year!

The Vancouver Canucks was the third most searched Canadian Sports Teams and Vancouver, itself, was the fourth most searched Cities in Google Maps.

The Canadian beer Molson remains the most searched Beer and the most searched Canadian Foods were bacon, poutine and maple syrup. Very typical, right?

What I found most interesting was that people, even on the internet, are simply looking for love. The top Trending ‘What Is…?’ is What is Love and second highest Trending ‘How To…?’ is How to Love.

These statistics may seem kind of boring, but it shows the dominant thoughts and influences of the culture in this period of time. Our ways of discovering the “truth” has changed with our advancement in technology and social media. Who knows, maybe Google does have the answer for everything, even if its love!

For a complete list of the top Google Searches, take a look at Google Zeitgeist 2012.

INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday- Think different

Christmas time is here! Lights, special cookies, tree decorations…red cups in Starbucks, Christmas market… definitely is here! Even if we are still in November!

Probably for the most of us will be the first Christmas time without our families and friends at home, it will be strange I am not going to deny it! But it could be a really good experience to live with our “new families” here! We arrived alone, but nobody is alone anymore. Living without your family and friends makes you more open to the new experiences and it’s easier to know more and more people. It’s usual to establish some kind of special connection with some people, like if you already known them for a  long time;they are part of your life and will be forever!

Some relations are stronger than distance and time, I am far away from home an even if I would live here for long time I’m sure than when I come back the important people in my life will be still there, like always. And the same will happen in the future with the important people you met here.

You don’t forget anyone just because the distance… and right now the borders just mean paperwork, but nothing else.  If you want something, if you love someone just change the things, nobody can say you can’t. Live your dream, don’t dream your life. Everything is possible if you firmly believe that.

And after this little reflection, it’s forbidden to think more, it’s Friday! Let’s party with our new family here!

Happy Friday!

Cheers,

Irene

INTERNeX Canada: About INTERNeX – 3 Top Reasons to Love Vancouver

I arrived five weeks ago and right now, I can say that this place is my new home. The home I picked myself from tons of places in the world. But what is so special, what distinguishes it from other cities, what are the arguments to choose Vancouver over any other great destination for an experience abroad? Here are my 3 top answers. They are different for everyone as people are different but these are mine.

1. I love Vancouver because it is so different and yet so familiar.

When I decided to leave home again, I was sure it was going to be a place on another continent and 6 hours on the plane from Germany at the absolute minimum – just to get the real feeling of leaving everything far behind and going on a true adventure, you know. 😉 After I had eventually made it all the way across the Atlantic Ocean then, I soon realized that the lifestyle in Vancouver didn’t come as a total culture shock for me. For sure, it’s more easy-going and apparently more “North American” than the European cities I know but Vancouver didn’t give me a very hard time to adapt. So home is where the heart is? Yes, I agree.

 2. I love Vancouver because it has taken all sorts of boredom from my life.

As a kid from the countryside who studied in the ‘megacity’ Salzburg and did some internships in Munich, I’m not exactly used to big city life and also not too keen on full time entertainment. So what do actually I want then? And that’s exactly the thing about Vancouver: You can pick your own pace. There is every opportunity to go wild each night or hike every day or kayak or shop or chill on the beaches. Right now, I love my status of a busy person at work whose free time is packed with tons of dinner or movie dates, party invitations and awesome stuff in the outoors on the weekends. INTERNeX plays a major role in that, so thanks! 🙂 Nevertheless, I know if I decide to rest and take it easy for a while – Vancouver is such a chill place, it’s not going to be all that hard to find a quiet spot somewhere.

3. I love Vancouver because it attracts young people from all over the world who are just like me.

“…who are just like me” sounds kind of cheesy, I know. But it’s true! I have always been an outgoing person who wasn’t afraid of meeting new people but the problem before I came to Canada was, that I simply didn’t meet that many people to begin with. Over here, however – oh my God. I had never before talked to a stranger on the Skytrain and decided to meet up for a drink the next time we accidentally bumped into each other on Robson Street, for example. What a random friendship but it’s great and we still hang out!  People are just more open-minded and willing to make new friends. At work, on the street, at the bar – I constantly find myself talking to strangers. And some of these strangers become friends if you put some effort in it. What a wonderful life it can be if you have the chance to actually look for the people you spend your time with and it’s even better when you reach the point where you realize they like you in return.

Why do YOU love Vancouver? Please add your reasons to the list!! Or what do you expect Vancouver to be like in case you’ve never been here?

I’ll see you around 🙂

INTERNeX Canada: News /Fun Facts

Today I just want to share my personal opinion about this amazing city! Vancouver it´s the third best place to live in the world! Of course no one of us is stupid at all choosing Vancouver for doing our internship, working or improving our English here!

But why is Vancouver on the top ten?

I don´t know how is in your cities, but in Madrid it´s no possible at all sailing and in the same day skiing! But here you can do both or even change the skiing for a beach day! Awesome!

The first days that you are in Vancouver you think: Oh what a big city with all these skyscrapers but then once you have been living for a while, you realize how small Vancouver is! It looks like a big city but is like a village! It has the best things of the big cities: a lot of shops, cinemas, theaters, everything you can imagine… but also the best thing of living in a “village”: everything is near, you can walk everywhere and in a short period of time you will know the most of the people around you, your bus driver will be YOUR bus driver, you will know the most of your neighbors and you will find them everywhere! If you love the party you will see that the most of the people, even the international people like us that just stay for a while, are always the same! So this city is perfect to make friends! (And maybe not that good if you have enemies)

So apart of being a great city with a lot of beaches, mountains, it is also SO green! There are parks everywhere what are especially nice on this time of the year! Stanley Park is simply amazing! Every time I ´ve been there I think the same: it is not fair that not everybody can see it! I would love that all my friends to have the possibility of seeing and enjoying it!

Vancouver as you all can see, it is so international! There are a lot of Asiatic people, European, Latin Americans… A city plenty of international and young people, it´s like impossible don´t have fun!

And what do you think about Canadian people? Can be they been more polite? They have always nice words and they always try to help you!

Maybe it´s a personal opinion, but I find Vancouver one of the most interesting cities I´ve never been!  I understand that tons of people that just come here for a little period of time then fall in love with this city and want to stay forever. Absolutely comprehensible!!

If you have never been here and you have the possibility, come to Vancouver! If you are already here, enjoy every day like there is no tomorrow!

Let´s enjoy Vancouver!

Cheers,

Irene

The INTERNeX Volunteer Program!

Do you love animals? Have you ever wanted to help, rescue or rehabilitate orphaned and injured animals? You can do this when you join the INTERNeX Volunteer Program! With the volunteer program you will help orphaned wildlife in Canada, because they need help all year round. With the volunteer program you will help out a local community and immerse yourself into an amazing and historical culture!

Most of the volunteer locations are in the remote parts of Canada, so if you enjoy nature and being outdoors as well, this program is the right fit for you! You will see the most beautiful, breath taking views and places. It is also possible to volunteer in a big city for those who prefer that, such as Vancouver, Toronto or Calgary. In the cities you can volunteer at pet rescue centers, where you will have to take care of cats, dogs and other pets.

The volunteer program is not quite the perfect holiday program, because the volunteering work could be exhausting sometimes. However, helping and rescuing animals is definitely a rewarding experience in your life. The volunteer program is unpaid, but it is definitely worth the international experience you will get back!

Are you outgoing, flexible, hard working, physically fit, good at communicating with others and a Canada fan? Then you would fit perfectly in our volunteer program! Would you like more information about this program? Go to our website: www.internexcanada.com

Make your Canada experience a unique one, go for INTERNeX!

Cheers,
Claudia
