INTERNeX Canada: Highlights of the week

What we did this week… as always it was amazing! The INTERNeX group went lost and found its way back again in Victoria. As you might remember we were stuck on an island last Sunday due to bad weather conditions. Once again, a moment that let us realize one of the many differences between Europe and Canada. Here, many things are still so much more dependent on the force of nature. But we made it!

Back in Van City we jumped into the planning of October: The month of Thanksgiving and Halloween. Are you already looking forward to a Thanksgiving dinner with your homestay family? Or are still looking for something to do? Remember that INTERNeX will offer you guys a Thanksgiving dinner, you just have to vote on the date. Besides the dinner plans, we also had our weekly smart saver again, and shared with you some details of our research concerning where to get cheap breakfast.

And for those of you who were frustrated by the fading sun and the seemingly ever present rain, we looked for some stuff to do indoors. One of us went to explore the depths of an enchanted store downtown, where everything becomes possible if you like books. And as a change to the office life, we had our PuB and CluB NiGHT on Friday. We went to The Cambie and to see how much fun we had there, you just need to take a look at Facebook on Monday. The pictures will tell you everything.

The only thing left to do for this week is to enjoy the walk through three of Vancouver’s neighborhoods this afternoon. If the weather continues to be as pleasant, it will be a very nice and relaxed way to discover parts of this beautiful city.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend and talk to you soon,

Annika

INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday

Today it’s all about books and why MacLeod’s Books is the best place ever! If you were frustrated about too much rain and desperately tried to figure out how to spend your time, then you should check out this store.

It is no ordinary book store, mind you. It is a paradise for everybody who likes reading. Not just reading; this place brings to mind nice afternoons in a cozy room, with a storm outside. You, being captivated in an imaginary place fighting dragons, falling in love with a knight or being the world’s most famous detective solving dozens of murders.

MacLeod’s Books is all that and more. I actually could move in there. Once you enter the store you can smell the books. For everybody who is not that much into books: Older and used books have a certain smell to them. And actually this smell itself already tells you a story. In the store you can see piles and piles of books. Books in shelves which are as high as the ceiling and books piled up in little corners, filling every little room available in this store. While wandering wide eyed through the room, I noticed that even though it looks quite chaotic at first, it actually is pretty well sorted. They basically have a section for everything, marked with little pieces of tape on the shelves. It goes from books about music, philosophy, language and science over books on warfare, criminal novels and love stories. Like I said before: MacLeod’s is a paradise for myself and everyone who loves to disappear into another world if the actual world is too busy or stressful or – if it is raining. And honestly, even if you do not enjoy reading as much – this store is still something to see.
