INTERNeX Canada: Culture Shock!

After a long time with perfect sunshines and temperatures, the clouds came back for a few days in the middle of August to Vancouver ! I should admit that Vancouver has greatly surprised me because I didn´t expect this great summer !

Of course, is not as hot as I would like..Everybody knows in Spain is hotter, but still, I think is a perfect temperature, neither too hot, nor cold ! Warm nice summer !

But what I wanter to share is that the other day I got surprised when talking with a few people from northern european countries told me that this weather is better than home.  At some point, I thought they were kidding or they wanted to make fun of me, so I decided to take a look on the internet, and that´s what I found.

  • Copenhagen, the capital of Denmarkexperiences the highest number of rainy days. It has a maritime climate due to Denmark being almost encircled by water.
  • Amsterdam is the most humid city. The city experiences 214 rainy days a year.
  • The european cities with the higher average of sunlight per day are Lisbon, Madrid and Athens (Also less rainy cities in Europe)

As I could realize, Vancouver with an average of 166 days of rain per year, has almost 100 days less of rain if you compare it with  the 251 days per year of Copenhagen. Now I understand !!

If you compare it with the top 6 of this list I won´t call it Raincouver again !!

And I found this quite interesting because the Spaniards have the perception that Canada is a very cold and rainy country, and they don´t know those places in Europe have more rainy days per year !!

What do you think? Is the weather in Vancouver better, or at your home City?

My conclusion is that Vancouver is a perfect place, not too cold and not too hot. Warm temperatures in summer and enough sun !

Best,

Mercedes

INTERNeX Canada: Clara says “Whats Up?”

Hi guys!

My name is Clara Garcia, and I’m the new PR Intern. I’m an Advertising and Public Relation student. I’m from Mérida, a very beautiful city in the Southwestern part of Spain, with a large amount of old Roman monuments and famous for its ham, red wine and other delicious things.

The last four years I’ve lived in Madrid, so I love big cities and I know people from all around the world. About my hobbies, I’m very interested in good films, music and visiting museums and art galleries. I’m very outgoing and cheerful; I don’t like being alone for long periods of time, so I want to make friends as soon as I can!

Now that I’ve arrived at Vancouver I can say it’s a wonderful city! I was a little scared at the beginning, but Canadians are incredible kind with foreigners and there are cool shops and interesting places everywhere, especially in Downtown. One very curious place is the Steam Clock (as you can see in the photo).

Now I’m concentrated on improving my English and having a lot of experiences so please, don’t hesitate to add me on Facebook or ask me anything you want.

Hope to see you soon!

Clara.

INTERNeX Canada: Raincouver or Suncouver?

Everybody knows about Raincouver, we always make jokes of that  in the orientations with our new candidates…  But lately what is my surprise? The most of the newcomers says oh no, it’s ok, actually is not that bad, it’s better than home … What???

https://i0.wp.com/farm9.staticflickr.com/8331/8090958288_89ac2863d7_m.jpgIn Spain everybody has the mental image of Canada like the North Pole…even after 5 months here, and a perfect and sunny summer at Vancouver, my friends still advise my Irene please wear proper clothes, Canada is extremely cold!

And as Spanish, and more if you live in Madrid where the average temperature of the year is around 20 grades Celsius of course is not that crazy to think that Canada is pretty cold! But grandma, friends… Canada in general is cold, but Vancouver is kind of warm. It rains yes, I won’t deny, but it’s not (so far) a heavy rain, so the most the times you can walk without umbrella.

Vancouver has around 160 days of rain per year…do you know how many days in Madrid?  58!!But investigating a little bit  about the rainiest European cities; here is the top ten!

1.Copenhagen, Denmark 251
2. Oslo, Norway 232
3. London, UK 226
4. Brussels, Belgium 220
5. Amsterdam, Netherlands 214
6. Helsinki, Finland 203
7. Stockholm, Sweden 164
8. Vienna, Austria 160
9. Prague, Czech Republic 143
10. Dublin, Ireland 139

Now I understand! We have so many people from Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands… and it rains more there that here!!!But not more, it rains almost 100 days more…oh god! I don’t know why Spanish people we always associated Canada like the rainiest and coldest place in the world…and then you just got surprise that not that far from home it can be much colder and rainier!https://i0.wp.com/farm9.staticflickr.com/8423/7790295924_67847e6f8a_m.jpg

Speaking in general the weather in Vancouver,  is not that bad!( I am Spanish..remember 20 grades, 58 raining days… so trust me!)It’s even warm! Of course I am not going to wear flip flop or sandals like some locals…but I am not lying, you can live perfectly here! And in some point you will even like the rain! Why do you think Vancouver is so green?

So for some people will be Raincouver but for other people can be Suncouver.. Oh god I love differences!

Enjoy the rain or the sun!

Cheers,

Irene

INTERNeX Canada: Culture shock

I am clumsy; I am not ashamed to recognize it! But even I am, it’s really difficult not to fall down here in Vancouver!

Why? Easy answer! Everything is full of leaves! You can’t even see the sidewalk! It makes sense I know. This city is plenty of trees and in this time of the year all their leaves falls down! But still!

In Spain there are trees as well, but even if we have a terrific crisis right now, there are always sweepers working to clean the pavements!  After two fallen in the same day (exactly in ten minutes) and with bruises around my whole body I am thinking, seriously thinking in propose something to the Canadian government. Please, please, please this city needs more sweepers! I mean Vancouver is great, I am in love with this city, but please I will love to keep my whole body in one piece!

In Madrid I was always complaining about the noises, because it seems they really need to clean the city in the early morning and with a super-noise- last-technology machine! But here is on the contrary, there are almost not sweepers!

I don’t use to complain a lot, but Madrid and Vancouver, both of them really need to find a middle point between no sweepers at all and cleaning the streets when the people are sleeping …

But there are always positive things, so battles with leaves are so much fun! And I can sleep quietly in the early morning while I stay here!

And who knows? Maybe I get a record of fallen and even appear in the Records Book!! 🙂

Have a nice day, watch out and take care, you are in Vancouver!!

Cheers,

Irene

INTERNeX Canada: Culture shock: Hockey vs football

The most important and popular sport at Vancouver and in general in Canada is hockey…  (Remember just say hockey, you will never heard “ice hockey “from a Canadian) And here everybody loves their team, The Canucks. They feel it like something personal and it´s absolutely amazing how the people get involved in their games.

In Madrid this is quite different. First of all we are not really into hockey… the sport without any doubt which goes mad the people, is the football.  But the second big difference is that in Madrid we don´t support the same team…not at all! There are tons of different teams, but historically and still in the present the people like one of the two “main” teams, of course as you can guess they are rivals, so you just can belong to one of them; these teams are the Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid.

Real Madrid has win in several times the national league, the Champions and all the possible competitions…they are famous everywhere, they have the most popular, expensive players and the people pay crazy amounts of money for their shirts and to see them playing… the companies all over the world want them to become their image, the teenagers get crazy with Cristiano Ronaldo and his six pack…

On the other hand we have my Atletico de Madrid, who wins some times and lose a couple of other times, but when it wins everybody celebrate it!  (yeah is not that common like with Real Madrid) It has good players as well, but not so many “football starts” like Real Madrid can have.

We have a saying in Madrid that say… “Del atletico se nace, del Real Madrid se hace” whose translation can be something like “Atletico´s fans were born to be fans, Real Madrid´s fan just become fans”. And that´s because the fans of Atletico are well-known everywhere for their fidelity and for being hopeful with the team even if the results are not as good as expected! If you support it, you will support forever!

In you are into football you will know Barcelona Football team, which is the other Spanish big team! Of course there is polemic and rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona as well…

I just notice how polemic the Spanish we are! Yeah another difference with Canadians for sure!

If you read the post you will know of with team I am, but you can NOT forget your values and respect the others! That´s much more important than just win! Fair play!

Cheers,

Irene
