INTERNeX Canada: Exposé of the week

Today I was talking to 2 INTERNeX Candidates from Germany, Konstantin and Christian. They graduated from highschool last year  and decided to come to Canada. They live together in downtown Vancouver and arrived at the beginning of January 2012.
They will stay until the end of July and do an internship organized by INTERNeX here in Vancouver in an Association Management Company.

Why did you decide to go abroad?

Konstantin:
Well, our first goal was oc course to improve our English. I think that´s very important for the future career plans. Of course it´s also a different and interesting culture we were confronted with

Chris:
Futhermore the experiences we make here are amazing. We get a deep look into the life of work and get more independent.

Is your internship useful?

Chris:
Yes definitely. We gather new experiences we wouldn´t have got back home in Germany. We are involved into the team and are responsible for different tasks. We have to show initiative and work also on our own but that makes it so interesting because it´s rich in variety!

What kind of tasks are you responsible for?

Konstantin:
We are the two studio-coordinators for the brand new conference room. We are responsible for the room, have to check bookings, promote it in the internet as well as with flyer and we developed a marketing strategy how to make it even more profitable for the company

What do you like most about your internship?

Chris:
We have interesting tasks every day so we never get bored. Of course there are also times when we are not too busy but we got to know many people and work together with the managers. We communicate a lot with other people so our English gets better and better so it meets our expectations.

What do you think about Canada & Vancouver?

Konstantin:
Vancouver is a very international city, which makes it even more interesting. We meet people from all over the world and get to know their cultures. People in Canada are very friendly here and you can ask everybody for help. We found new friends very fast, for example at the PuB NiGHTs and different events organized by INTERNeX.

What trips did you attend so far and do you attend the weekly INTERNeX PuB Night?

Chris:
We often go to the PuB NiGHT because it´s always fun to have a few drinks and talk to other students. We also went to the Laser Tag Event which was fun. We try to attend more activities and events in the future, now that we have set up everything here in Vancouver.

Konstantin:
We also went to the St.Patricks Day Party which was awesome. Around 60 people from INTERNeX were all together in a PuB and we partied all day long! I think all these events as well as the PuB NiGHT is a great chance to meet new people and find new friends from the very beginning.

Why did you choose INTERNeX International Exchange?

Chris:
We cam here with Step-In, a cooperation company of INTERNeX. But of course we also informed ourselves about INTERNeX. The feedback is very positive and they do many things for their candidates. The PR-Team organizes all kind of activities and trips for us so if we want to have something going on during the weekend we can just join whenever we want. That´s great for us and we meet always new people.

How did INTERNeX International Exchange help you to organize your trip to Canada?

Konstantin:
They send us all kind of information which were important for us before our departure. They showed us how to apply for the right visa and of course they organized our internship here in Vancouver. After our arrival we got a welcome orientation which helped a lot. They told us how things are going here in Vancouver, what we can do in our freetime and what kind of events they are planning for the future.

Would you recommend INTERNeX:
Chris & Konstantin:
Yes definitely. We are having a good time here in Vancouver, enjoying our internship and are glad that we did that step.

Thanks for taking your time, I hope you will enjoy the summer in Vancouver and we are glad that you have a good time.

Cheers,
Hannes

Candidate Expose-Matt

Hey, so since the start of our Staff introductions was such a success i thought i would take the next step and introduce to you some of our current/past candidates who have had such great experiences with in their programs and in Canada in general that they want to share their stories with you! So our first interviewee is Matt, he is the Vancouver Staffhouse manager. I’m sure most of you know of him or have met Matt personally but for those of you who haven’t then here is a little peak into his experiences with INTERNeX.

What is your name?
Matthias Weigel

Which program are you currently participating?
City placement at Blenz Coffee Shop

Are you enjoying it? Why?
I am really enjoying working at Blenz Coffee shop. They have a great training program that truly encourages us employees to have a strong work ethic, good communications skills and ultimately great life skills.  The initial training provided is 1 day at the training center, with ongoing training that is also provided every 2 months to asses and improve our skills. There are 3 levels of employees;  Junior, Senior and Master level. I have recently been promoted to the Senior Barista position and i am really proud of myself for achieving this. I think this is a great way to spark a healthy sense of competition amongst employees and it has truly allowed me to excel in a way i did not expect. If you choose to participate in this training program you will be trained, as i was, by Layla who was the 2 time World Free Pour Latte Art Champion. So this was a huge honor to be trained by a true professional. Also throughout my employment at Blenz i have truly been able to build on my customer service skills. The people here in Vancouver are so genuinely open that it’s been really easy to serve them but boy do they have some crazy drink orders!

What kind of experience are you gaining from this experience?
I have actually grown up for a significant portion of my life in the customer service industry since my parents owned a restaurant themselves. Therefore, i am pretty familiar with this whole customer centered environment; however, surprisingly enough working in a Coffee Shop is completely different. I have learnt a lot of stuff from Blenz, particularly in terms of management so it is my dream now to own my own restaurant later on in life. Hopefully, one day this dream will come true.

What do you like the most about Canada?
Well it’s hard just to choose one thing so i’m not even going to try lol. I have been to so many incredible places in Canada some of my favorite places were Victoria where i went whale watching and that was breathtaking and really reminded me of the movie Free Willy. I also went to Whistler and did some snowboarding and then last but not least i loved Tofino where i went surfing. Everywhere i’ve been has truly been magnificent because i’ve been exposed to so many of the beautiful sites in Canada and i love all the nature i’ve been blessed to see.
