Candidate Exposé – Lisa-Marie Hartwig

My name is Lisa-Marie Hartwig. I am 21 years old and I live in Stuttgart (southern Germany). I am studying Business Administration in the Service Sector Management of Non-Profit Organizations.

20140724_135517I wanted to experience a new country and I wanted to strengthen the general and specific knowledge and skills that are necessary for the work in NPOs or NGOs. At the same time I wanted to do this on an international level.

I found INTERNeX through the information event of the DHBW. I did the practicum program for 4 weeks. I chose this program together with a co-student. I liked it very much. I was placed at a small environmental organization with really cool people. The work was monotonously but we knew that before. The skills you need to have for this job are endurance, speed and attention. This was not a part of my university program. It was a voluntary decision from me. My employee didn’t mind. But it is useful for my résumé.

I was at a home stay from INTERNeX. My first impression from Vancouver was that the city is ugly. I was a little bit disappointed because many people were jealous. It was really cold in my room and I had a long bus drive to the city centre. I am not in Canada anymore. What I liked the most about the city and Canada was the neatness of the people.

I attended a lot of the activities from INTERNeX. I liked them very much because of different people you meet there. I was at Stanley Park, the Lookout, Harbour Centre, Robson Street, North Vancouver, Richmond, Lynn Valley Park and drove to a lake outside Vancouver. Visiting Sunshine Coast at the place of a colleague was the most memorable thing I did in Canada.

The first thing I did when I came home was having a dinner with my boyfriend and my parents. In Vancouver I thought I would travel more in the future, but since I am back in Germany it is the same daily grind like before. I would totally recommend the services of INTERNeX. They managed to call a taxi for the airport. And the introduction presentation was really helpful. The organized events were great and helped me to arrange my evenings.

INTERNeX Canada: Exposé of the week ft. Christoph Schmitz !

This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing  Christoph Schmitz, who comes from Köln, Germany and finished his bachelor in Business administration. He decided to come to develop his professional skills before he starts his master studies.

He attended an internship with INTERNeX in Vancouver at Purdy´s, the leading chocolate company in Canada.

Why did you come to Canada?

Well, I´ve been traveling quite a lot I would say but I’ve never been to Canada before and it was like a very unfamiliar place and I wanted to discover something new and that´s mostly why I came.

Tell me about Purdy´s, the company you are working for.

Purdy´s is the chocolate leading company here in Canada and they have 63 shops all over the country. It was founded in 1907 by Mr. Purdy and since 1963 the Flavelle Family owns the business.

This is the only Factory, located in 2777 of Kingsway in Vancouver, but there is another location with a bigger warehouse and also offices in the City of Vancouver.

What is the best and the worst about working in a chocolate Factory?

The best specially here is that people are really very nice, friendly and helpful. They help me a lot, especially during the beginning. Another good thing is that I have very interesting tasks here.

But eating chocolate everyday is not so good. Hahahaha. Well, I have to admit is not so bad as well!

Have you gained weight since you work here?

I guess a bit, hahaha, but I didn’t step on the scale, but maybe a bit yes.

What’s the most unexpected thing about working in Purdy’s?

Well, here I work for purchasing, but I also do some quality issues, and also participate in some smaller projects. Is very interesting because I didn´t expect to try different things other than purchasing.

What´s the most interesting thing that you learned?

I didn´t have really too much idea about purchasing before and I think I know quite a lot know, and I also got in contact with a lot of people and that´s very interesting.

What are your basic daily tasks?

Mostly all the colleagues from another departments come and tell me what they need, for example ingredients or so, and I start my research on the internet, catalogues and so, and I have to find good quality and good price. Then I give suggestions about what can fit the best, and sometimes I try to get them samples so they can test it before.

If they agree with me, I create a purchase order and ask for quotes and I contact the suppliers, and if everybody agrees I send the purchase order and then I confirm the arrival of the order, and make sure that is complete or is not broken or if there is a kind of problem with the order.

Is your internship useful?

Definitely yes. I learnt a lot about purchasing and I saw that is very connected to my field of study, so is very useful. And of course I have interesting tasks (when I wake up every morning I don’t really think I have to go to work because I really enjoy it). It´s without doubt a great opportunity for me.

What do you like the most about Canada and Vancouver?

I really like that in Vancouver you have all the kind of places you can visit. You have the mountains, the sea, a big city, etc…so you can do everything here as long as the weather is good!

What is the thing that you liked less about Vancouver?

This question is pretty hard. I would say that the worst thing is that I miss my family, and my girlfriend, so if they were here they would make it perfect!

Did you attend some trips or activities with INTERNeX?

Yes, I attended the PuB Nights and some trips, for example the White Water Rafting Trip in Chilliwack, which was amazing.

Why did you choose INTERNeX?

I contacted a guy in Germany who looked for international internships and he suggested INTERNeX because he had a very good experience before and worked quite a lot with INTERNeX.

Was INTERNeX helpful here in Vancouver?

Yes, definitely. Mainly because it was easier to find friends and meet people in the same situation. And I was always had the chance to be in contact with you guys, and ask you questions.

Would you recommend INTERNeX?

Yes, of course, because they organize very nice trips and also the pub nights which are a very good way to meet new people and have a relaxing time after work. They also helped me a lot and when I arrived hey gave me a welcome orientation, etc.

How did you find you accommodation?

Mina from INTERNeX, helped me and contacted my homestay family, so I could get my room. It was too easy.

What’s the first thing you will do when you arrive to Germany?

For sure drink local beer!!

What’s your favorite chocolate in Purdy’s?

I really like the dark chocolate with lots of cocoa, but I would say that my favorite is the one with a combination of caramel inside and salt inside of dark chocolate. Hmmmm.

And now for all of those who love chocolate, what´s the process in the factory for making chocolate?

First we get all this huge mass of ingredients and then in the kitchen they melt the chocolate, they mix all the ingredients and make all this secret recipes. When the chocolate is done, it goes to another section where they cut it and mix it maybe with more chocolates (for example if is it has cream inside). Depending on the type of chocolate we have to add some extra ingredients.

When it´s ready, it´s saved in boxes and then they go to the pack-line where they are introduced in it´s right box or package.

Finally, the chocolate goes to the Warehouse and then to the cooling room. If we need to ship directly the chocolate in the West Coast, we have two trucks for that.

And last question that I need to know, why can´t you wear perfume in the factory?

Well, because the chocolate absorbs the tastes. For example is you put chocolate in a paper, in a few weeks is going to taste like paper. So that´s why also we can´t wear perfume because it absorbs everything.

Thank you so much Christoph for sharing your experiences with us and best of luck in your future !

Best,

Mercedes

INTERNeX Canada: Exposé of the week ft Alexandr Tankos !

This week, we had the pleasure of interviewing the hockey coach Alexandr Tankos, who came from the Czech Republic with a Working Holiday visa and attended a city placement with INTERNeX.

Tankos award

Ron Thorpe (left),President of Richmond Minor Hockey Association with Alexandr Tankos(right)

He has been in Vancouver for 1 year since he came here, and he has the chance of staying 1 year more in Canada on a Young Professional Permit.

A month ago, he won the “Excellence in Coaching Awards”, award which is given to coaches who best exemplify the essentials of coaching (communication, instruction, player development, fair play, sportsmanship, leadership and organization).

Why did you choose Canada?

Well, I finished my studies in Public Administration in Prague and I decided that I wanted to improve my English Skills and also to gain new life experiences.

I considered the USA and UK, where I studied English for a short period, but Canada has the Working Holliday Program, which was really easy to participate in, and I decided that I could experience a new culture and experiences here.

I also chose Canada because this country is very friendly and it has a strong passion for ice hockey!

And why Vancouver?

I had other options like Toronto and more places, but Vancouver is a beautiful city and the weather is really good, and not very cold (during the winter -1 C).

How did you find INTERNeX International Exchange?

When I came back from the US to Europe, I asked my agency in the Czech Republic about some international programs and they were working with INTERNeX. They introduced me to Timothy Wells, President of INTERNeX. After a couple of meetings with Tim I understood what I should do in order to: find a good job related to my major, prepare for living in Canada, meet new people and what I needed for working in Canada.

What’s your job here and what tasks are you responsible for on daily basis?

I’m a coach at “Richmond ice hockey minor association” and “Pacific elite hockey school”. Where they run a very professional program. I received high level coaching and mentoring from the “Director of Players and Coach Development”; Glenn Wheeler, who gave me the background I needed and new experiences. In general I coach players from 6 to 17 years old in the skills session or team stuff as well.

My tasks are mainly training the guys at the ice rink and also off-ice (dryland). I also have to deal with parents, coaching meetings and prepare team building.

Wow. How did you decide to coach?

When I came to Canada, I realized that it was pretty tough to obtain employment in the governmental sector (high level of English and French, citizenship, etc.).  So I asked myself “what should I do?” And that’s when I figured out that I could do something related with sports.

But why did you think about doing something related with sports?

Because before I started my University I used to play hockey in Czech Republic.  I played in the junior team during the time I was studying in the high sport school and then I had the chance to play one year in the adult team. I finished my hockey career due to a few injures and then I started to study University.

I also had a couple experiences because I used to help my father, who was a general manager of one hockey club in Czech Republic; I was helping and watching him for more than 10 years.

What’s the first thing you did when you came to Canada?

First I went to what I consider the best language school in Vancouver (International House) to improve my language skills and to meet new friends. I recommend this to everybody. That was the start of my new life here in Canada.

Then I went to INTERNeX and that’s when I started to figure out what I was looking for.

The INTERNeX’ Team helped me a lot and supported me, arranged a meeting with the company, and they prepared me for my interview (How to introduce myself, how to dress and also the mentality for the meeting).

It was tough, but finally I got it, I recognize it was a big chance.

Alexandr with his plaque in Downtown Vancouver.

Do you find big differences between the ice hockey in Canada and Czech Republic?

First of all, we have to understand that Czech Republic has probably only around the 10% of hockey players that Canada has. If we want to be competitive with, we need to spend more time on ice and off-ice as well.

Another difference is that ice hockey clubs in Czech are more connected with adult’s hockey, boys can stay in one club since they start to play in “Hockey 1” until adults as a professional level. Here in Canada are many “small associations”, where the best players play till Midget, after they go to Major Midget, then to WHL as juniors, and then, if they are very good, to NHL.

And also the differences are seen in the parents. In Canada, parents pay more money, and they are logically also more involved in what the coach does.

Now talking about ice hockey, what do you think is necessary to be a hockey player?

I think you have to have these criteria:a sense of hockey, be fit, a background in hockey and have good luck. That’s all!!

How do you like your job and why?

I’ve got a job, which I love, for sure! And I love that, because I can help to kids every day. I teach them and I enjoy doing that. For me is not actually really a job.

What’s the best thing about your stay here in Vancouver?

I think the best thing is that I got a job, which I love and I’ve met honest and friendly people that helped me a lot. I went to a very good language school, in hockey I have been professionally mentored by the best coaches in B.C. and I always had the support of INTERNeX.

And what’s the worst thing about your stay here?

The worst part is that I’m very far away from home and maybe I don’t know so many people as I know in Czech.

So what is the first thing you will do when you return back home?

I’ll hang out with my parents, my grandparents and friends….and of course I’ll drink CZECH BEER!! Hehehehe.

Finally, would you recommend INTERNeX International Exchange?

Yeah, for sure I do! They helped me a lot!

But I just want to mention than people who want to come have to think about they have to try their best effort for getting what they want and they have to understand the Canadian culture.

I wanna say thank you to INTERNeX!

Thank you so much Alexandr for sharing your experiences in Canada with us and best of luck in your future !

Best,

Mercedes
