INTERNeX Canada: How was your weekend?

It’s Monday, it’s raining, and it’s cold. At least we can say we had a good weekend. We went on Sunday to the Eastside Flea Market, in the Grandview – Woodland neighborhood, just next to Commercial Drive.

This kind of markets is very common in Canada. It’s a place where the people rent a little space to sell or barter items. Normally you can find used goods and second hand clothes, but also handmade jewelry, furniture and even food. They are the best places to buy low price merchandise, vintage fashion and unique gifts.

There was a little place to buy coffee and cakes and tons of things to look over! I bought one watch for only 5 bucks! We were talking with the sellers and we found some very interesting people, who travel around North America buying and selling antiques and old clothes. I found a stand with leather jackets from the 70’s! They were too much  expensive for my student budget, so maybe the next time 🙂 .

There were also some stands where the people were selling their own stuff. This is other thing that is very typical here, making yard sales or garage sales. Instead of throw out the things that they don’t need any more, the people sell them in front of their houses or in the flea markets. Or sometimes they leave boxes outside of their houses and you can take everything for free! It’s very funny because this is a thing that you always saw  in the movies!

After that we went to Cafe Deux Soleils, just next to the Commercial Skytrain Station. I strongly recommend that place, is so cool and they have concerts and humor shows all the time for $5! We finished up our evening with some huge hamburgers.

So it was a nice evening! But our camera is broken, so we only have the pictures that Mercedes took with her mobile phone… the quality is not the better, but I hope you‘ll be able to appreciate the place!

See ya!

Clara.

INTERNeX Canada: How was your weekend?

Another monday, and another started week. I hope your weekend was awesome.

This Sunday, we wanted to hike out. The Grouse Mountain was the chosen place.

We wanted to go so bad, but unfortunately at around 8:00 a.m. started raining cats and dogs, and we had to postpone because we were afraid of a terrible rain during our hiking.

So we decided to go for lunch at  Tampopo, a “all you can eat” sushi restaurant in Denman Street, quite close to English Bay. It was an amazing lunch with wonderful views. The restaurant was located in a 2nd floor and we could see the ocean from there.

The weather changed and it turned into a sunny and wonderful day. So after our lunch, we decided to go to English bay and in our way we stopped to buy ice-creams and some frapuccinos.

It was full of people enjoying the nice weather, and we could talk and lie in the grass. We enjoyed the sun and the company. It was a very nice day.

I should admit i think I won’t be able to understand the weather in Vancouver: It rains during an hour, and suddenly the sky clears up and you can enjoy the beach. It’s amazing, isn’t it ??

Next time, I’ll hike the Grouse mountain whether it’s raining or not, because Van is unpredictable.

Best,

Mercedes

INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday. Victoria Day !!

Victoria Day (French: Fête de la Reine) is a national Canadian pubic holiday celebrated on the last Monday before May 25, in honor of Queen Victoria’s birthday. So this year is officially Monday 20th!! Yeahhhh, day off!

Victoria DayBut what do you know about this day? I’m sure a lot of you don’t know too much about it, so keep reading!

Queen Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819 and is still the longest-reigning monarch of the United Kingdom. (During her life, the British Empire expanded substantially).

The monarch’s birthday has been celebrated in Canada since before the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign.

After her death, on January 1901, May 25 became “Empire Day”, and for many reasons the Monday before the 25th became Victoria’s Day!!

In some cities, fireworks are displayed or parades are held to mark Victoria Day.

One of the most notable parades is held in the capital of British Columbia; Victoria, which was named because of the Queen Victoria! It’s really famous its Victoria’s celebration, so If you can don’t miss it !!

I hope you enjoy Victoria Day wherever you are!

Best,

Mercedes
