INTERNeX Canada: Casual Friday!

Who doesn´t know the Science World at Telus World of Science? This organization, established in 1977, is run by a not-for-profit organization.

Today I´m not going to talk about the organization itself, but about the advertising it makes to catch the attention of the target population and the media.

To make you an introduction of what´s  going on, the current exhibition is “The science of Sexuality” (from May 18 to September 2), where it´s explored the different stages of sexual development from conception to body transformations. Without doubt, Science World presents a positive image of sexuality and explores what science has to reveal and say about the topic. If you are interested the general admission for student is $21.

But now going on deep in what I wanted to talk about: The ads of Science World.
I think they are making a very great job with their advertisement, as you will see in the following examples. In a world were people are more interested in video games or television, is vital to know how to promote science in a original and catchy way.
The agency which works for Science World´s advertising campaigns is the award-winning Rethink.
For the science of sexuality, they created this campaign. Take a look:
AdSW1 AdSW2 AdSW3
I think these ads are brilliant, with just a small advertising copy(text  that aims at catching and holding the interest of the prospective buyer) who explains it all.
The images just support the main task of the ad and catching the attention of the prospective target population.
What do you think? Did they get your attention? Are you now interested on going to this exhibition ?

Best,

Mercedes

For the past month, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Simone. She flew in from the Netherlands and came to explore Canada on October 15, 2009. I’ve gotten the chance to hang out and party with Simone while living at the INTERNeX staff house, and she is so full of character! It’s evident in her laugh that she’s been having a blast in Vancouver, and she recently got to show her family around town too while they came for a visit!

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Well, it was really hard to get a visa for the United States. Vancouver was the next closest thing and the Olympics were going to be held there so that’s what helped me make my decision.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
I found out about INTERNeX through a dutch organization called Travel Active.

What program are you currently participating in?
I am in the Hospitality program doing a city placement at Blenz.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I love working with other international people, some of which are my roommates and housemates.

What skills do you use at work?
I have to multi-task and have great social skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
It is beautiful – a lot like Europe. People are really nice here… almost too nice!

Can you sum up your experience in Canada?
It is an awesome time to get to know life and more about myself.

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
I’ve seen a lot of nature, been to the Rockies, and visited lots of areas within Vancouver such as Granville Island, Metrotown and many different beaches!

What are your plans for the future?
I plan to travel more all over the world, and maybe come back to Canada to work on a farm. Eventually though I would like to settle down back at home in the Netherlands.

Meet Gudrun, a young mind from Germany who is ready to conquer anything Canada throws her way. I first met Gudrun at the INTERNeX office a few weeks ago, and then again at INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! We chatted for awhile about her internship and how she was enjoying her time spent in Canada. She was so interesting to talk to, I thought I would ask her to share more about her experiences so far.

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Canada was my destination of choice as I decided I would like to spend time in an English speaking country and Vancouver has a reputation for being innovative and very keen on sports. I think living and working overseas is an important learning/life experience and in today’s global society, it is getting more and more important to gain a more international perspective.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
INTERNeX is in collaboration with my German organization, which arranged everything for me.

What program are you currently participating in?
I’m doing an unpaid internship!

Do you like program offered by INTERNeX?
Yes, I think they offer many different kinds of options, so anybody will find the right program.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy learning a lot about the structure and work processes within the company. It’s great to have the opportunity to work unsupervised and to display initiative.

What skills do you use at work?
I use my computer skills along with my verbal and written English language skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
You have to experience Canada yourself, but I would recommend Canada to anybody. It seems to be a country with lots of international influences and many opportunities, regarding sports, culture, nature, shopping and sightseeing… and the Canadians are all very friendly and open-minded.

Can you sum up your experience in 10 words or less?
Vancouver is awesome, I’ve enjoyed every minute so far!

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
There is still so much to do, but I’ve been to Seattle already, I also enjoyed Stanley Park and the Aquarium, Granville Island, The Capilano Suspension Bridge and of course some pubs in Downtown.

What are your plans for the future?
After my internship I want to travel first before I’m going back to Germany. Afterwards I will either apply for a new job or doing my PhD. I haven’t decided yet.

Hi from Houtan!

So you might be wondering who this fine young gentleman is?! Well this is Houtan and some of you  might not have met him before because has been out of the office for a little while. Currently, Houtan is working out of Toronto but will be back in the office in the next few months so here is a quick introduction to a new face (for some of you at least) and check out baby Nala in the picture…too cute!

What is your name?
Houtan

Where are you from?
Tehran, Iran

What languages do you speak fluently other than English?
Russian. I can also communicate in Ukrainian and Arabic and a bit of German, and of course Persian my mother tongue

What position do you hold at INTERNeX? and for how long?
Good question, I have no idea what one would call my position or anyone else’s position for that matter at INTERNeX International Exchange..funny thing is that part of our job is to try and envision what working in a Canadian company would be like to most people who are about to work within a Canadian organization through one of our programs. Yet we work in a company that demonstrates and represents a Canadian organization based on employees from different parts of the world who wear different hats on a daily basis to provide excellence in service. That is why I can’t really tell you what my position is. (does this make sense?) I think Im just blabbing on again, but hey that’s me!! Lol And I have been working at INTERNeX just over 2 years and they have been  full of excitement

What made you want to get involved with INTERNeX in the first place?
Like minded people, think alike…well, I’ve had quite a background in travelling from A to B (never enough though), learning about visas, after finishing up school and getting involved with Canadian Resorts and the hospitality industry, it all seemed like a good match with what INTERNeX had to offer, so there I was getting started and here I am still rocking it

In what ways do you think INTERNeX is unique from other international placement agencies? What does INTERNeX offer that no other company can?
Aside from the fact of how thorough our service is and its not even comparable to any other agency, it’s also that we don’t think our programs are for everyone. The participant needs to understand the purpose of the program before being forced to be a part of it. Our honesty in delivering the service is a key in managing expectations

What changes have you personally noticed within INTERNeX?
I have noticed a number of little programs come and go, but the city placement program was a great success and it still is both in Vancouver and recently in Toronto. We also now have more representatives abroad, an official office in New Zealand, and a more so active presence in Toronto, ON

Where would you like to see INTERNeX in the next 10 years? Do you have any New Year’s goals for the company?
I truly believe that the possibilities are endless. Obviously I, along with the rest of the team, would like to see a world wide network of services provided by INTERNeX offices across the world. Now the services provided by INTERNeX within the next 10 years is what I would like to see continue on its journey to completion and perfection so that one day we’d be a tool for anyone from anywhere in the world that would like to take a trip to any part of the world for the purpose of work experience and/or self development

Tell us one interesting thing about yourself that not a lot of people know?
As a kid I always wanted to become a vet

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?
It is really hard to answer this question, I love travelling and I don’t think I can settle anywhere for too long. I like what Toronto has to offer as a city, yet Vancouver’s geographical location is much more attractive than Toronto. On the other hand, Kiev Ukraine is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever lived in due to its historical background and remarkable architecture. But again, the grass is always greener on the other side, so we’ll keep on moving

The INTERNeX Invasion

Good afternoon! So i have some great news to share with you all…INTERNeX was recently featured in the “The Baristar” monthly company newsletter. Blenz has been the recipient of many of our wonderful candidates so it is great to hear that our positive experience is not going unnoticed.

Have you noticed many European accents at Blenz lately? In preparation for the Olympics and to be able to serve all the extra people in Vancouver efficiently, almost all businesses in the city have been hiring and training personnel for the past couple of months. At Blenz Coffee we have been working with INTERNeX International Exchange, a work experience placement organization that works closely with Northern Europe to find job placements for young people. These exchange workers come from countries such as the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Czech Republic. It was the perfect time for Blenz to work with INTERNeX to find excellent new staff. When you go to Blenz Coffee location you may be served by the smiling face of an employee hired through INTERNeX.

Be sure to strike up conversation with an INTERNeX staff member and hear their impressions of Vancouver. Simone from Holland, working at Blenz Fairview, says she loves Vancouver coffee culture and finds it funny to hear locals call a cafe “coffee shop” because in Holland that is a place that has nothing to do with coffee (hint: Amsterdam). Emil from Denmark, working at Blenz West Hastings, says his experience as a barista at Blenz has changed him and would like to pursue being a barista when he goes back home. Moshdeh, also from Holland and working at Blenz Robson, lives in one of the INTERNeX staff houses and shared a funny story. She came walking down the stairs of her house one day to find six people (all Blenz employees) sitting around totally absorbed and entertained by the Blenz Recipe Guide Training.

I hear they throw good parties at the INTERNeX staff houses-maybe you can find a way to get invited ;)DVD.
