How was the weekend?

A new week has begun and I can feel it’s going to be good one.

My weekend recap is rather boring, since I tried to cure my cold. I was resting a lot and couldn’t take part in any cool events, but I know some of you did! Since I haven’t done much, I will tell you about Marcel’s weekend instead. 😉

Guess where he went – Yes, he went to Ottawa. The flights were super cheap, so he decided to check out Canadas capital. From what he’s told me it’s a cool place!

Fun Fact: Ontario just lifted their mask mandate last weekend.

One thing he noticed is that it’s more bilingual than here in Vancouver. Everybody first starts speaking English AND French, and then chooses how to continue depending on your preferred language. For example, they’d say “Hello, Bonjour”, and see in which language you reply to proceed with the conversation. We think it might be because it’s so close to Quebec, the province in which French is the official language.

Compared to Vancouver, summer already arrived in Ottawa and Marcel took the opportunity to cruise around the rather small city, he says. His favourite thing was the view over Parliament Hill with its historic buildings and when I see this picture, I know why. 🙂

More things to do in Ottawa are a free tour through the Parliament building and a visit in one of the numerous museums the city has to offer. He thinks, there’s something for everyone. Since it is a smaller city, you can see all the main attractions within 2-3 days, so it’s a perfect destination for a weekend trip.
Pro tip: Go in summer, rather than in winter. Ottawa is very lush during the warmer months, whereas it can get very cold and grey in winter.

Another personal highlight for Marcel was the fast food chain Harvey’s. It’s Canadas second largest fast food chain, after Tim Hortons, and mainly present on the East Coast. He explained that it’s kind of like Subway, but with Burgers. And now I’m hungry. You might wonder why that’s a highlight, but he told me that he’s doing some sort of challenge, where he’s trying many different fast food chains, that are not existing in Germany, to compare which one’s the best. I already asked him to make a list based on his experience, so I could share it with you guys. 😉

INTERNeX Canada: Happy Canada Day !!

Back from our White water Rafting Trip, it’s time to celebrate Canada Day !!

July 1^st, and it’s the 146^th Anniversary of this amazing land. If you didn´t know, this national day it´s a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1^st, 1867 (Constitution Act, 1867, which confederated the country of Canada).

You can find celebrations everywhere across the country for Canada Day, usually outdoor events, such as barbecues, parades, fireworks, free concerts, carnivals and different kind of shows.

Here is a few things you can do in Vancouver today:

Canada Day at Canada Place: The biggest birthday bash outside of Ottawa. 25 music and dance performances on three stages, extreme sports, street food and the Canada Day Parade.

• Waterfront Party: 10a.m.-6p.m.
• Canada Day Parade: 7p.m-8p.m. (Starting at Georgia and Broughton Streets)

Canada Day Burrard Inlet Fireworks Show: One of the summers’ best fireworks shows. There is two bargers: one in Coal Harbour and one in Dundarave. Best viewing is from Canada Place or Coal Harbour Seawall.

• Visible from different locations throughout the city: 10.30 p.m. -11 p.m.

Canada Day on Grandville Island: As part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Fest, lots of free concerts will be staged at different stages throughout Grandville Island.

There is also a parade and face painting and roving clowns for kids.

• Grandville Island: Noon -9.30 p.m.

As you can see, we have a lot of interesting options. Which one do you prefer?

INTERNeX Canada: Culture Shock

Celebrities and stars on TV and in concerts are in our daily lives but did you know that many famous musicians and actors are from Canada? Check out some of the legends who were born in the Great White North:

Avril Lavigne, the skater-punk girl with black cloth and a tie, became famous almost overnight with her song “Complicated”. She is from Ontario, as is Shania Twain. This country superstar is known for songs like “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” or “That Don’t Impress Me Much”, remember? Another Ontario-produced celebrity is Bryan Adams. This world superstar is from Kingston, Ontario and has been a singer, songwriter, photographer and much more since the 1980s. We all sing along when his song “Summer of 69” is on in the club at least once a weekend. From Toronto, Ontario is the rock legend Neil Young, who is the idol of many starts. He played in bands and solo and his most famous song is probably “Heart of Gold”.

Then there is Nelly Furtado who is from Victoria, BC. The rock/folk singer-songwriter sang in a duet with Bryan Adams at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games. And of course there is Celine Dion from Quebec. We know her for many cheesy songs and the Titanic hymn “My heart will go on”! Did you know that the director of “Titanic” is from Canada as well? The Ontario born film legend James Cameron made movies like “True Lies”, “The Terminator”, “Aliens”, “Titanic” and “Avatar”.

In film, one of the Canadian superstars is Pamela Anderson. Apparently, she was not born on the beach in the red bathing suit but is from Ladysmith, British Columbia. The next one is a real Canadian: Keanu Reeves we all know from The Matrix. He was born in Lebanon to an English mother and a Hawaiian-born American father. The family moved around the world and ended up in Toronto. Jim Carrey is of course a famous Canadian with a dual Canadian and American citizenship! He is an actor and comedian known for many many different movies like “The Mask”, “The Truman Show”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” or “Bruce Almighty”.

Oh, and of course, Justin Bieber. No explanation needed.
