REMEMBRANCE DAY

As you might know it’s Remembrance Day this Wednesday, November 11. The holiday is also known as Poppy Day or Armistice Day. But what is Remembrance Day you might ask? 15149724183_8c8974ff5d_bWell, basically it’s a day to remember all Canadians who sacrificed their lives during World War I and World War II. On that day Canadians commemorate the fallen members of the armed forces like soldiers, sailors and airmen. The date and the time on which the festivities are taking place certainly have a special meaning: The hostilities of World War I ended officially on the eleventh day of November 1918, in the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour. So every year at that time is at least one minute of silence to honor all those fallen soldiers. Connected to that day most Canadians wear a red poppy the weeks before November 11. This symbol evolved due to a poem written by a Canadian writer and soldier John McCrae, called “In Flanders Fields”. It’s one of the most famous pieces of Canadian literature.

15770509952_469a5f7876_bIn remembrance of the soldiers fallen in the line of duty Vancouver had a parade last year. Our PR-Coordinators participated and they were absolutely fascinated. They wrote a review about that day; here is a short extract about how they experienced it: “A lot of people met up to show their respect and support […]. It wasn’t just a parade. We could also hear the sounds of shots being fired from cannons; we could see old 2nd World War airplanes flying overhead, poems were being read out loud… For sure this was an unforgettable experience.”

This year the Remembrance Day Ceremony and Parade will start on Wednesday, November 11 at 9:45am at the Victory Square Cenotaph at West Hastings Street and Cambie Street. For more information to the Parade, click here.

Canada Day!

Tomorrow’s a special day, as we should all know by now. It’s Canada’s birthday!

The country came into being in 1867 after the three colonies Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada joined into a federation on July 1st. So Canada’s just shy of becoming 150 years old.

This July 1st is on a Wednesday and at Canada Place the first event of the day is called Waterfront Party which will be from 10am to 6pm featuring various entertainments like live music, activities for children, street hockey, an armed forces show, a circus show and lots of food carts, as well.
Next up is the Canada Day Parade. It begins at West Georgia and Broughton Street at 7pm and ends at 8pm.
Finally, to finish the day with a bang, there will be fireworks at 10:30pm which we’ll have a great view of from Canada Place.

So, this is the plan. We’ll be meeting up at 1pm at Waterfront Station.
Following this, we will walk over to Canada Place to check out all the fun shows and activities they have going on there.
We should definitely check out the parade at 7pm, as well.
And after we’ve had our fill, it’s pretty much a free for all since some might want to have a look at the Canada Day Party at Wreck Beach while others will want to stick around for the fireworks.

Looking forward to an awesome Canada Day Birthday Party!

What to do on the weekend

This weekend you definitely don’t want to miss out on one specific event, the Grey Cup. So, what is the Grey Cup? Well, it’s the Canadian Football league’s championship. And it’s big! Getting your hands on the tickets for the actual football match on Sunday without having to pay a fortune will be difficult. But don’t despair. Lots of other events are taking place in the days leading up to the big final. Go and watch concerts with local performers, experiencet the Grey Cup trophy being taken by fans to the stadium, and don’t forget to join INTERNeX for the Grey Cup Festival Parade and cheerleader competition. Check out the details for all the events here.

If you want a little break from all of the football hysteria, just go to the Baker’s Market at 7646 Prince Albert (60th & Fraser). Here you’l find baked bread, cookies, scones, muffins, cakes and much more. And best of all, there’s no entrance fee to the market. The market will take place this Saturday from 11am till 3pm. Click here to get the last bit of information about this market. Or why not go to the Granville Island Public Market. Here you can get nice fruits, fresh fish, freshly baked bread and much more. Have a look here to get the total overview of the market.   Just looking at all the colourful stalls is an experience.
