What to do on the weekend?

Winter weekends are not the most fun in Vancouver due to the rain and cold weather, but that shouldn’t keep you from having a good time and making the best out of your stay here!
Let me help you find things to do on this weekend.

First I’d like to invite you to come with INTERNeX and experience the STRIDE Burnaby Arts Festival! Explore Burnaby Heights with performances, community art displays, artist talks, and more. We’ll be walking around the neighbourhood, find cool art exhibitions, and end up at the Celtic Kitchen Party which offers lively tunes, soulful songs and compelling stories, inviting to dance with your friends. And how convenient is it that there’s a really famous pasta restaurant right in this area? 😉 For anyone who burns too many calories dancing there’s a chance to check out the restaurant after the event, how does that sound to you? The restaurant is known for its great food and big portions, I dare you to finish it all at once!

Feel like shopping? I have a great idea for you – the Valentine’s Arts Market which takes place on Sunday from 1pm till 5pm at 1448 & 1450 West Broadway. I know it’s called Valentine’s Market, but who says you need a Valentine to go? Why don’t you treat yourself this year with a nice present? The market offers beautiful locally made craft items and art reaching from candles, to chocolates, textiles and more. There’ll be great promotions and treats for you to enjoy and I’m sure you’ll find something quite unique there whether it’s for yourself, or someone special in your life. 🙂

Who of you is a chocolate lover? If you, like me, can’t get enough of the sweet delight then I’ve got the perfect weekend activity for you: The 13th Annual Greater Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival. It’ll end on Valentines day so this will be your last chance to go around some cafes and try out their specialty hot chocolates (they are usually created especially for this festival and only available during that time). You can find 140 creations at 95 different locations and the great thing is you can explore a new neighbourhood while supporting local businesses and staying warm with a hot cocoa on a grey winter day. I recommend going rather early since the chocolates are pretty popular and sometimes sell out at some cafes! Also be aware that the price for a special hot chocolate might be similar to a price for a cocktail here, but trust me, it’s worth it. 😉

Here’s a link for you to see participating businesses: https://hotchocolatefest.com/virtual-map

I can’t wait to see you Friday, or hear about your weekend at our next pub night!

Cheers,

Laura 🙂

Smart Saver Vancouver

It’s Wednesday again, which means it’s time for the Smart Saver! We found some great deals for you to help save some money.

If you would like to go out to watch a movie, it’s a good idea to do that on a Tuesday at Cineplex since they offer cheaper tickets for “Cineplex Tuesdays”. Instead of the regular $ 11.99 admission you will only have to pay $ 7.99, which is a pretty good price for going to the movies. If going out to watch a movie is something you like doing more often I would also recommend becoming a SCENE member, this will give you an additional 10% discount and you can earn points to get rewards.

When you’re doing groceries it might be a good idea to check out certain products at 7 Eleven. They have great deals on soda’s and chips. They also serve food such as hotdogs and pizzas that are cheap and a good option if you’re in a hurry or just looking for a quick snack.

Using a foreign bank account can become quite expensive if you take a look at the fees, so a lot of people choose using cash instead. When you withdraw money there is usually a fee attached as well, but Iris found out that the HSBC machines charge you only $2 instead of the usual $3. However, you might be one of the lucky ones that can use Scotia banks Global ATM Alliance, which means you won’t get charged any extra fees at all. Only certain banks are a part of the Global ATM Alliance, click here to go to their website to check if your bank is part of the alliance.

Going out for dinner doesn’t have to be expensive in Vancouver, you just got to make sure you go to the right spot. Something everybody likes is pasta and we found two great places to go. First off there is Ciao Bella, a real Italian restaurant where you get 50% off on meals every Monday and Tuesday night and everyday at lunch. Then there is The Old Spaghetti Factory, here you can get a three course menu for only $15.

You might have noticed that yesterday was Valentine ’s Day, so if you really like chocolate like most of us in the office do (except for me), you might be able to score some that are on sale!

Hope to see all of you tonight at Tap & Barrel!!

Rockies Trip 2014 Spring Review I

Wauw… what a weekend. There are not enough words in the world to describe this weekend, it was mind blowing. Over the next day we will review the Rockies Weekend trip. Let’s start with the first day on Friday at 8:00am.
We met at Watefront station on Friday at 8:00am and left Vancouver around 8:30am. Before we stopped in Hope for our first stop, we drove by a little town called Abbotsford, also known as the Canadian Capital of Raspberries. The town as one of the highest percentages of Christians in BC. As Lee told us this would make a great city to life in if it would not have the highest shoot-by crime rate and a high teen-mom rate.

Our first stop was in Hope, a small town in BC that is famous for their main street, where First Blood was produced and famous for their annually chainsaw wood carving fest. All the wooden carvings in Hope are made by only using chainsaw. We grabbed a coffee at the local coffee shop to wake us op and made our way into the Rockies.

We stopped at a big mall for some food and to have a quick walk around the fair before we headed towards the Spatahs Falls.

Before we could see the Spatahs Falls, we had to make our way through some rough snow and of course we all were prepared very well with our sneakers on.
The Spatahs Falls are a waterfall that in the summer gets really massive, but when we visited it was still quit, because there was not enough melted snow water yet. However this waterfall is a great place to make some funny pictures, like the waterfall comes out of your mouth or nose. After making our way back to the bus it was time to relax a bit before we arrived in the hotel in Valemount.

Once arrived in Valemount we checked-in to our rooms and went down to the Lobby for a nice Pasta Dinner before heading next door for our night out. And of course to practice the Backstreet Boys dance that Lee showed us in the Bus.

The first day was a big success and we saw so much of beautiful Canada. Stay tuned for the next Rockies review and do not forget to join the After-Rockies-Party by clicking here.

What was your highlight of the first day?
