I was looking for a potential candidate for an exposé. A person who can really tell something about the “INTERNeX experience”. Then I realized that this person is in the office with me sitting across the room! Claudia, one of the interns at INTERNeX! She knows a lot about INTERNeX, is doing an internship like many other candidates and is living in the INTERNeX Staffhouse. Let’s see how she experienced everything so far.
What is your name?
Where are you originally from?
Utrecht, The Netherlands
Why did you choose Canada as the location of your placement?
To be honest, it was a little bit of a coincidence. In the first place I applied for a placement at INTERNeX in New Zealand but there was a spot for me in Canada as well. My family told me it’s the most beautiful country they’ve ever been, so I decided to go.
How do you like Canada so far?
It is beautiful and the people are really nice!
How did you find INTERNeX International Exchange?
I was searching the internet for internships.
Why did you choose to participate in the Internship Program?
I’m in my third year of University which means that I need to do an internship for 20 weeks. It is an international study so I decided to do an international internship as well. Furtermore I wanted to improve my languages skills. This program is really good for my future career.
Are there certain requirements that you needed in order to do this internship?
The internship must be in the field of my study. They wanted someone outgoing, social and who can deal with different cultures.
For how long will you participate in this program?
My internship will be 5 months in total.
If you choose one program that you would recommend, which one would it be and why?
Hospitality. I really like it! If you choose the INTERNeX Hospitality Program, you go to beautiful places like Banff and you will have a paid placement. I must admit it’s more about improving your languages skills and having a good time instead of working on a future career like the internship program, but it’s great!
Which position do you currently hold at your internship placement?
Public Relations Coordinator! 🙂
What kind of tasks are you responsible for on a daily basis?
I write blogs, use social networks to update the candidates, make newsletters for agencies & candidates and do orientations for new candidates who just arrived in Canada. Furthermore I organize events & trips together with the other interns.
What are some of the skills that you gained so far from your internship?
I have more technical knowledge about how to use cetrain computer programs. I improved my English. I know now how to approach business partners and now how to act professional.
Do you feel that this experience helps you in terms of your future goals, both professionally and personally?
Definitely, professionally I know now how things work in a real company, so I have real international work experience.
Personally it helps me as well, I meet so many people that I otherwise wouldn’t have met. This helps me to extend my vision.
What was one of the most memorable moments you have had in Canada so far?
Going to Whistler with INTERNeX candidates and friends was really amazing! Sitting in a hot tub with a beautiful environment and snowboarding on the mountain.
Which one place/event/festival would you encourage people to check out?
I really like the event Saint Patrick’s Day and everything that comes with that (the parade, club crawl etc.). If people are in Vancouver they should definitely visit Vancouver Island.
Have you managed to do any traveling?
I have the weekends off, so then there is time to travel. So far I’ve been to Victoria and Whistler. A good thing about my internship is that I organize trips for INTERNeX candidates and I join them as well, this way I can combine my internship and traveling. I also have a few weeks after my internship to travel, my family will visit me and we will go on a roadtrip.
What are you planning on doing once you return home?
I will eat typical Dutch food, meet my friends and family again, hug my cat, enjoy summer and after that I need to finish my last year of University.
Thank you Claudia!
