Ready for Salt Spring Island?

It is already this weekend! The countdown is on! The next INTERNeX trip to Salt Spring Island is just about to start. I hope you are already as excited as I am. Here is the last information to get ready for the trip.

We are meeting on Friday at 2.30pm at the ferry terminal in Tsawwassen. To get there, you can take the Canada Line to Bridgeport Station and then the bus 620. It will take you about 1.5 hours from downtown, so keep that in mind. We will check in on the ferry and enjoy a few hours ride on the sea. Once we arrived on Salt Spring Island, we are going to settle in in our house and make ourselves comfortable. Dinner and games are on the programme for the night. So if you have any fun games, please take them with you!

Saturday, we are going to start off the day with an awesome breakfast. With enough energy, we will depart for a hike or for a visit in a cider tasting room. After spending the whole day in nature, it is time to relax in the hot tub or on the terrace. Burgers will be on the menu this night, before we continue with some games.

Oh and by the way, the house you see in the background here is the real one!

After a relaxed breakfast on Sunday, we will pack our luggage again and head to the ferry. We will be back in Tsawwassen at around 5pm. You might wonder what to put in your luggage for a weekend on an island. Most important: warm shoes and clothes in which you can hike well, games for the nights and bathing clothes (for the hot tub). You do not need to bring any bed sheets with you. Since are travelling by public transport, make sure that you can carry your luggage easily.

I am already looking forward to a great weekend! If you have any more questions, I am happy to help.

See you tonight at the Beaver Bar!

– Kerstin

Picture and Video of the week!

Today we will have the picture and the video of the week together in one blogpost. Why? Because they are both related to our AMAZING Rockies trip! Last weekend we went with a bunch of people to the Canadian Rocky Mountains and we had the time of our lives there!

This picture of the week is taken on the glacier in the Rocky Mountains. We went with a Snocoach Glacier Explorer down to the glacier where there was still a lot of snow. Luckily it wasn’t too cold, so we could just walk around in the snow. Our tour guide Adam took a picture of the whole group in the snow! 1-2-3 JUMP – here is the result! Isn’t it beautiful?

The video of the week was also made during our trip in the Rocky Mountains. On Sunday we went to a place called Golden. We had an amazing bonfire there, we did some line dancing and we made a great set-up to prank a guy from our bus, Gerrit. We told him that we were making a movie for the video of the week, so that he had to stand underneath a balcony. When he was standing there ready to say something for the video of the week, Lee emptied a bucket of water from the balcony all over Gerrit. Well, it wasn’t really a lie, because he is still the video of the week! Enjoy the movie, it’s hilarious!

In case you have a picture or video that you would like to share with us, send it with a small description to pr@internexcanada.com and your picture might be the picture of next week.

Cheers,
Claudia

News Flash

I hope everyone had an awesome St. Patrick’s Day! The last couple of days we have been celebrating St. Patricks Day, but do you actually know what we are celebrating? I have to be honest, I didn’t know! So that is why I looked it up for you, so you will be ready for next year!

Saint Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland and one of the most celebrated religious figures around the world. When he was 16 we was kidnapped from his native land, England, by a group of pirates. They brought him to Ireland where he was sold into slavery. From his master he had to work as a shepherd and feed all the animals. He turned to his religion for comfort from the Lord and he prayed every day. After six years of slavery he escaped from his master. He returned to his home country England, where he decided to become a priest.

One night he had a dream about the Irish people calling him to convert them to Christianity. So, after finishing his study and preparing for several years Saint Patrick returned to Ireland as a Christian missionary. He was able to bring upon a massive religious shift to Christianity by converting people of power. He laid the groundwork for the establishment of hundreds of monasteries and churches that eventually popped up across the Irish country to promote Christianity.

On March 17 in the 5th century Saint Patrick died, which is now the day we celebrate St. Paddy’s day on! So, now you know why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. You’re ready for next year!!

Cheers,
Claudia

Candidate Exposé

Meet Gudrun, a young mind from Germany who is ready to conquer anything Canada throws her way. I first met Gudrun at the INTERNeX office a few weeks ago, and then again at INTERNeX PuB NiGHT! We chatted for awhile about her internship and how she was enjoying her time spent in Canada. She was so interesting to talk to, I thought I would ask her to share more about her experiences so far.

Why did you decide to come to Canada?
Canada was my destination of choice as I decided I would like to spend time in an English speaking country and Vancouver has a reputation for being innovative and very keen on sports. I think living and working overseas is an important learning/life experience and in today’s global society, it is getting more and more important to gain a more international perspective.

How did you find out about INTERNeX?
INTERNeX is in collaboration with my German organization, which arranged everything for me.

What program are you currently participating in?
I’m doing an unpaid internship!

Do you like program offered by INTERNeX?
Yes, I think they offer many different kinds of options, so anybody will find the right program.

What do you enjoy about your job?
I enjoy learning a lot about the structure and work processes within the company. It’s great to have the opportunity to work unsupervised and to display initiative.

What skills do you use at work?
I use my computer skills along with my verbal and written English language skills.

What would you tell others about Canada as a country?
You have to experience Canada yourself, but I would recommend Canada to anybody. It seems to be a country with lots of international influences and many opportunities, regarding sports, culture, nature, shopping and sightseeing… and the Canadians are all very friendly and open-minded.

Can you sum up your experience in 10 words or less?
Vancouver is awesome, I’ve enjoyed every minute so far!

What kind of activities have you done since living in Canada?
There is still so much to do, but I’ve been to Seattle already, I also enjoyed Stanley Park and the Aquarium, Granville Island, The Capilano Suspension Bridge and of course some pubs in Downtown.

What are your plans for the future?
After my internship I want to travel first before I’m going back to Germany. Afterwards I will either apply for a new job or doing my PhD. I haven’t decided yet.

Not sure which program is for you? Visit http://www.internexcanada.com for more information on how INTERNeX can make your trip to Canada happen!
