Candidate Exposé – Jakob Rodehorst

“Moin Moin” that’s how you say Hello really often in the northern part of Germany .
Today i would like to introduce you to Jakob, a 26 year old student from Germany.

Originally he’s from Hamburg but currently he’s living in Berlin doing his Master’s degree in political science.
Back when Jakob was planning his stay abroad in Canada his main motivation was to improve the chances to a masters degree. Additionally, since he did his internship at Amnesty International and this company still represents a future potential employer for him, this practicum was an ideal opportunity. For sure he also wanted to get some international experience after finishing his bachelors degree, get to know new people and improve his language skills. He really enjoyed working at Amnesty International, a well known human rights organization, where he organized the volunteers and helped them in planning the events. He was able to acquire skills such as working independently on his own topics, organizing different tasks as well as communication skills while finding new partners for the company. For him an additional interesting point was to learn a lot about and from the first nations in Canada.
He definitely had many unforgettable memories but meeting amazing people from all over the world while exploring the Rocky Mountains and the many other beautiful nature spots was the most memorable thing for Jakob. He joined several INTERNeX pubnights, did a bike ride in Stanley Park, went to Richmond night market and celebrated the typical German “Oktoberfest” at UBC with us. As I can say, it was a really fun time.

For him Vancouver, Canada presents the most beautiful and unique landscape he has ever seen in his life. Next to this there is this unique North American city which has so much to offer. The perfect place to be 🙂
Has this trip inspired him to travel more? Yes of course. He actually did right after his internship was over. He rented a car with his girlfriend and travelled to the eastern part of Canada, flew to New York and Mexico. This definitely sounds more than amazing.
During his stay abroad INTERNeX was a great support for him. We could help him to get in a social circle and he appreciated having someone to talk to with small problems. INTERNeX made the perfect start in this new and at the beginning even strange environment possible for him. And that’s definitely a thing everybody wants to hear.

Thanks Jakob for sharing your special Canada memories with us 🙂

Have a great week 🙂

What to do on the weekend?

It’s a sunny day in beautiful Vancouver, and you know what makes this day even better? The fact that it’s Friday and the beginning of the weekend! In case you need some ideas as to what to do, here are some suggestions.

19060909285_60930d1034_oThe Richmond night market is starting today, where you can find amazing foods from all around the world. You can choose from 120 vendors with over 600 food items, making it North America’s largest night market. Each year the market has over one million visitors. This year’s theme is “summer chill party”, making it the perfect place to end your day. The market will take place over the whole summer and is open from Fridays to Sundays from 7 pm to 12 am. Admission is $4.75 pp.

ice creamSince it is so sunny, you probably want to cool off somehow. Maybe by enjoying some ice cream? In this case, you should check out La Casa Gelato. They have 238 flavours in store. Let me repeat that….238 flavours. So if you are bored of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry, you have to go there. You can find them at 1033 Venables St.

Other than that, I would just recommend spending as much time as possible outside, either at a beach, on a hike or simply by strolling through the city, and enjoying the wonderful weather.

PS: Don’t forget, Mother’s day is on Sunday. Remember to call your mom and tell her how amazing she is!

Enjoy your weekend!

What to do on the weekend?

It’s Friday and the sun is shining… Sounds like a great start of the weekend to me! It is supposed to stay sunny throughout the weekend, so here are some tips on what to do.

18876089399_3d63a1829d_nAre you into good food? And you like good music too? Then today is your lucky day! Today, the Richmond Night Market finally opens its doors to the public. On the market, you can find more than 100 food stands and over 200 retail stands. Moreover, there is a 50-foot entertainment stage that provides visitors with live performances throughout the evening. The word ‘boring’ will definitely not be in your vocabulary if you decide to visit this diverse market. The best part: entrance fee is only $3.75!

10141278356_812cfcd956_nOn Saturday, Granville Island is the place to be. There will be an Art Smash Street Party in which the wall paintings at the island’s new public space, The Chain & Forge, will be revealed. Not only will wall paintings be revealed, the party includes live painting as well. If art does not necessarily interest you, feel free to have some food at a variation of food trucks. According to the weather forecast it will be warm on Saturday, so having a cold beer is definitely a solid option too. Entrance to the party is free and it will last from 1 to 9pm!

On Sunday, it’s Mother’s Day! Whether you are here with your mom, or live with a host mom, it’s time to show your appreciation for her today. Take your (host) mom to the Glades Garden, where you can enjoy coffee, tea and chocolate while being surrounded by blooming flowers and music. The garden is opened from 10am until 4pm and tickets are $7 (cash only). Want something a little more exciting? Have a high tea with you mom on the train! Yes, you read that correctly. The Port Moody Station Museum offers a ride on their passenger train car, called ‘the Venosta,’ where families can enjoy a variety of teas, fruit and pastries. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children.

Enjoy your weekend everyone! I look forward to seeing you at our laser tag event on Sunday!

How was your weekend?

I can imagine everybody is sitting in front of the computer, refreshing the wordpress page from INTERNeX and hoping for the new ‘How was your weekend’ blog post. Good news. Here it is. So sit back and enjoy my adventures of this weekend.

It all started Friday after work when I went to Steamworks to eat diner. After the nice guy who was sitting next to me paid my food, I went to Nuba in Yaletown where I met some other candidates. We went to Granville where half of the group wanted to eat something first, the other half including me went to Donnellans as the beginning of the pub-crawl. After the group was complete again, we wanted to go to the next pub. But instead of going to the next pub, we ran into a lady who gave us free tickets for Studio, a club on Granville. That meant the pub-crawl was over and the club night began. After a few hours, we decided to check out Cambiebar. Instead of Cambiebar, we ended up in the Metropole. Not singing a song, because there was no karaoke this night.

The next day it was time to go to the Richmond Night Market. When we arrived, we saw a big line in front of the entrance. But luckily a lady came to us and sold us a $25 dollar ticket to skip the line. Inside we had so many choices for food it was hard to decide what to eat. After our meals we checked out the other non-food area and the fair. We decided to end the day in the Bourbon where we enjoyed our cheap-happy-hour drinks.

Sunday some people wanted to jump at the trampoline park. I doubted to go, but because it was raining and I was very tired, I decided to stay home today and watch a movie instead. It was a very relaxing Sunday.

Hope you all had a good weekend as well and hope to see everybody Wednesday at PuB NiGHT.

What to do on the weekend?

TGIF…. TGIF…. Yes people it is Friday, which means that the weekend is just right around the corner. That means we will give you some new tips on what to do during your weekend.

This whole weekend the Vancouver Fringe Festival will take place. This is a festival with dozens of exceptional alternative theatre shows. The festival takes place on Granville Island and other theatre venues. On Friday there is a band playing called Mazacote at the Big Rock Brewery Fringe Bar at 9 pm.

18876089399_3d63a1829d_zOn Saturday we want to take you to the multicultural Richmond Night Market from 7 pm until 12 am. If you want to do something more inspirational during the day you can go to the TEDxEastVan which is a mini version of TED featuring local inspirational speakers. It’s taking place in the York Theatre.

And on the last day of the weekend there is the Whistler Village Beer Festival which is a major craft beer festival in the Olympic Plaza from noon until 5 pm. There are also all kind of farmers markets going on like the Sunday Farmers Market in Kitsilano, White Rock, Mt. Pleasant and some other places.
