INTERNeX Canada: Picture of the Week

The picture of the last week of 2011 is taken in the Lake Louise Ski Resort. two weeks ago I went to a trip to the Rocky Mountains, and during one of these days I did some snowboarding in Lake Louise. On the picture you can see that it was not busy at all. Sometimes I was the only person on a run, just like on the picture below. That was amazing, I really enjoyed this day!

Do you have an awesome picture for the first week of 2012? Send it to us! Because you can win fantastic prizes!

Enjoy your week!

Cheers, Lydia

The A -Team

I went to see the A-team with a couple of people staying in the Staffhouse at the Scotiabank theatre last Tuesday. It was Tuesday so that meant Telus Movie Combo Deal! For only $11.70 we got the ticket, popcorn and a drink!

As I went around the house to ask people if they wanted to come along, I came to the shocking conclusion that several people in the house never even heard of the A-team.  I couldn’t believe what I heard because in the Netherlands they used to show it on TV all the time.

So for those of you that don’t know, the A-team is an American television series about a group of ex-United States Army Special Forces soldiers who work as Soldiers of fortune (soldiers for hire) while being on the run from the military because of a ‘crime they didn’t commit’. Despite the fact that there are running from the law they are always on the good side and help people in need. The show ran from 1983 until 1986.

The A-team has 4 members:

  • The leader Lieutenant-Colonel John ‘ Hannibal’ Smith, know for his excellent plans, sigars and the phrase: ‘ I Love It When A Plan Comes Together’
  • Lieutenant Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck, usually called Face is a smooth talking con-man who uses cons to make sure the team has the supplies they need.
  • Captain H.M. ‘Howling Mad’ Murdock, who is the team’s pilot and lives in a mental institution because he is insane.
  • Sergeant First Class Bosco Albert BA ‘Bad Attitude’ Baracus. He is the team’s strong man and mechanic and has a fear of flying. The team usually uses a trick to get him into the plane, such as drugging him, knocking him unconscious etc.

The main cast of The A-Team. Clockwise from top: MurdockB.A. BaracusHannibaland Faceman.

The intro of the TV show combined with the theme song are well know by everyone. If you don’t know it or would like to see it again, here it is

I thought Liam Neeson did an outstanding job portraying Hannibal in this movie, but in my book nobody can top George Peppard’s performance as Hannibal. Hannibal was my favorite character in the series and George was definitely the right man for the job. Same goes for BA, nobody can beat Mr T’s role but Quinton Jackson did a fantastic job with his character BA. And of course there was the ever loving Face, who is still persuading the ladies. In this movie the lady of his choice is Jessica Biel. And let’s not forget Murdock, in this movie it was finally reveled why BA is afraid of flying, and I wouldn’t go in to much details but I has something to do with Murdock being crazy as usual!

I was really looking forward to seeing this movie. I really wanted to know if the movie was as good as the series.  After I have seen the movie, I can honestly say that I really loved the movie. It had a good combination of humor, romance and of course fighting, shooting and blowing things up.  I really recommend everyone to go see this movie! It is so worth it!

What Are You Doing This Long Weekend?

This weekend is supposed to be a nice one! I have a few things on my to-do list that I want to see during the next few days. One of them includes Lynn Canyon Park. The park officially opened to the public in 1912 and has been a popular destination among tourists and local residents ever since. It’s a great location for a  picnic, a leisurely hike, or a refreshing swim in one of the many popular swimming holes!

The Lynn Canyon Suspension bridge is one of Lynn Valley’s best kept secrets. The 50 meter high bridge stretches accross a beautiful canyon boasting raging waters, waterfalls and deep pools below. The bridge is a popular attraction among tourists and locals alike, the best part is that it is free of charge for all to see. Crossing the bridge is always an exciting experience, it bounces up and down and sways from side to side with every step. It is quite narrow and becomes a little nerve racking when there are several others trying to cross at the same time.

Not only is there a suspension bridge, but there are also twin falls.  A short wooden bridge crosses the raging river and there are two breathtaking waterfalls below. This bridge is a lot more comfortable than the Suspension Bridge as it doesn’t shake with every move. As a last stop, you can relax at a swimming hole which is popular among local residents who visit the park on a regular basis and tourists on a short visit. The 30 Foot Pool is a short walk from suspension bridge and doesn’t involve climbing hills or stairs. It is pretty easily accessible.  There is a small beach area near the swimming hole that is covered with small pebbles and good to lie down a towel or a blanket.

Getting There

If you are traveling by bus there are various routes to take depending on your location. From Downtown Vancouver take the sea bus across to the Lonsdale Quay bus loop and take either bus #228, or #229.

Bus #228 will take you to Lynn Valley Center, which is about a 10 minute walk from Lynn Canyon Park’s main entrance. Bus #229 will take you directly to Lynn Canyon Park’s main entrance.

If you are traveling from East Vancouver, Burnaby, or Metro Town area take any bus to Phibbs Exchange. The most common busses are #130 via Metro Town, #28 via Joyce Station, #210 via Downtown Vancouver.

From Phibbs Exchange take bus #229 which will take you to Lynn Canyon Park’s main entrance.

Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Cheers,

Laura

Enjoy Stanley Park!

Hey guys!

Did anyone get outside this weekend? The beautiful weather made it impossible for me to stay indoors. I joined in on a trip to Stanley Park with my housemate Melissa and her friends – who are visiting from Germany!

Beautiful weather at Stanley Park

I guess we weren’t the only ones with that idea, because as soon as we reached Denman street, there were people everywhere! Robson street was also quite chaotic as people hopped in and out of stores to get the latest deals on clothing.

As we stepped off the bus, we made our way over to a bike rental shop. If you’re looking for a nice way to spend the day, there are many stores which rent out bicycles and roller-blades for a nominal fee. I rented a mountain bike for 5 hours, and it cost me less than $20.00 CAN. Melissa’s friends rented roller-blades from Spokes for an hourly rate of $9.00 CAN. Did I mention you can also rent tandem bikes? These are bicycles with two seats, so if you have a friend or significant other, it makes for a fun day!

Once everyone was geared up and ready to go, we were off! We made our way around the boat harbour, and soon came across the 9 o’clock gun. Cast in England in 1816, brought here in 1894, the gun was used by mariners to set their chronometers and also to warn fishers of closing. Neat!

As we continued our trek, we passed a lovely scene of totem poles at Brockton Point.  This was a great place to stop and take pictures. The totem pole display area is the most visited tourist attraction in all of British Columbia and has an interesting history. In the early 1920s, the elected Park Commissioners of the day supported the idea of constructing an Indian Village in Stanley Park near the Lumbermen’s Arch area. This site was chosen as it had been the location of a massive midden, or cultural mound, resulting from years of habitation by the native aboriginal peoples.

Laura at Stanley ParkAs we continued our journey around Stanley Park, I realized that every view was a gorgeous view! Around every bend, and every corner was a breathtaking sight. I took many pictures on Saturday to make sure I never forgot what a fun time I had! This is a picture Melissa took of me. I love it because in the background there’s water, mountains and a sailboat.

There are many beaches along the route we took, so we decided to stop at Second Beach. A couple of feathery friends payed us a visit while we relaxed and listened to music. Two bald eagles sat, perched on a branch on the tree beside us. They remained there for quite some time – I guess they were enjoying the sunshine too!

Make sure you get a chance to check out Stanley Park, it really is a great way to spend the day with some friends! Click here for a map, which shows all the nice things to see along the way. I’ll be back there sometime soon, because I didn’t get the chance to go through Stanley Park – just around. It’s that big!

The best thing about this park is that it’s free to enjoy. Also, there’s so much to see. Lionsgate bridge, Inukshuk, even an aquarium hidden in the area. Make sure to check this while you’re here in Canada. Hope to see you guys out at the Calling on Wednesday for INTERNeX PuB NiGHT!

Cheers,

Laura
