Keep Portland Weird!

It’s finally time again: INTERNeX’s next monthly trip is taking place! In 2 days, we’ll all be sitting in a bus. And not only are we going away, we are going out of the country! Goodbye Canada and hello USA. Portland is our destination.

We’ll meet on Thursday, June 7th, at 6:15pm in front of the Pacific Central Station. From there, we will take the bus. A super exciting and fun 11-hours bus ride is ahead of us! The perfect time to talk to your seat neighbour, to listen to your favourite music, to read a fascinating book, to have a good night sleep, etc.

Rise and shine, it’s 6am and it’s a new day. Welcome to Portland Ladies and Gentlemen. We’ll go to the hotel directly to store our luggage (because check in is not open until 4pm). And because it’s so early and we’re all most likely starving, we’ll fill our bellies at the hotel buffet. At 10:15am, we’ll gather in front of the hotel. Time to go to downtown! A 2-hour walking tour will give us a first impression of Portland. Afterwards, you’ll have the chance to discover Portland on your own for 3 hours. At 4pm, we’ll meet up again so we all find our way back to the hotel. At last, we can check in! And now that you’re finally in your hotel room, you can rest for a while and freshen up! The next meeting time is 6pm, where we’ll gather in front of the hotel (once again). We’ll go for a delicious dinner in a restaurant. We’ll end the evening relaxed by chilling in the hotel. Games, laughs and talks included!

Good morning dear candidates! It’s for you to decide at what time you’ll enjoy breakfast. As long as you’re in front of the hotel at 10am, it’s all good. On Saturday, everyone gets to choose an activity (the choices are: the Chinese Garden, Pittock Mansion or the USS Submarine). After the activity, everyone has free time, the whole afternoon. Try to plan in some time to get snacks and drinks for the bus ride the next day. We’ll meet at 6pm at a restaurant in downtown (which will be announced at a later time). After our tasty dinner, we’ll head to another activity. It’s for you to decide whether you’d like to go roller skating or play mini golf in blacklight. After that, the 21+ people have the chance to discover Portland’s nightlife. Yay!

On Sunday, it’s time to go back to Vancouver. It’s up to you again at what time you want to eat breakfast. Check out time at the hotel is latest 11am. We will also meet at that time to go to the Greyhound station, so make sure you’re ready on time! This time, an ‘only’ 9.5-hour long bus ride is ahead of us! We arrive back at the Pacific Central Station at 10pm.

Don’t forget to bring:

  • Passport (must be valid)
  • $6 USD in cash to cross the border
  • Your documents to re-enter Canada (work permit etc.)
  • Umbrella or rain jacket (unfortunately, the weather forecast doesn’t seem great)
  • Your bikini / swim shorts (there is a pool we could use)

So, Keep Portland Weird! (That’s the unofficial motto of the city, by the way) And I’ll see you tomorrow for our PuB NiGHT at The Relish or latest on Thursday at 6:15pm!

Candidate Exposé – Lisa-Marie Hartwig

My name is Lisa-Marie Hartwig. I am 21 years old and I live in Stuttgart (southern Germany). I am studying Business Administration in the Service Sector Management of Non-Profit Organizations.

20140724_135517I wanted to experience a new country and I wanted to strengthen the general and specific knowledge and skills that are necessary for the work in NPOs or NGOs. At the same time I wanted to do this on an international level.

I found INTERNeX through the information event of the DHBW. I did the practicum program for 4 weeks. I chose this program together with a co-student. I liked it very much. I was placed at a small environmental organization with really cool people. The work was monotonously but we knew that before. The skills you need to have for this job are endurance, speed and attention. This was not a part of my university program. It was a voluntary decision from me. My employee didn’t mind. But it is useful for my résumé.

I was at a home stay from INTERNeX. My first impression from Vancouver was that the city is ugly. I was a little bit disappointed because many people were jealous. It was really cold in my room and I had a long bus drive to the city centre. I am not in Canada anymore. What I liked the most about the city and Canada was the neatness of the people.

I attended a lot of the activities from INTERNeX. I liked them very much because of different people you meet there. I was at Stanley Park, the Lookout, Harbour Centre, Robson Street, North Vancouver, Richmond, Lynn Valley Park and drove to a lake outside Vancouver. Visiting Sunshine Coast at the place of a colleague was the most memorable thing I did in Canada.

The first thing I did when I came home was having a dinner with my boyfriend and my parents. In Vancouver I thought I would travel more in the future, but since I am back in Germany it is the same daily grind like before. I would totally recommend the services of INTERNeX. They managed to call a taxi for the airport. And the introduction presentation was really helpful. The organized events were great and helped me to arrange my evenings.

3, 2, 1… It’s Rocky Mountains time!

I’m sure we’re all counting down the days. Because in only a few days, we are going on one of the best trips of the year: the Rocky Mountains! Four days packed with fun and exciting moments are ahead of us. But what exactly is the plan and what do you all have to bring? I will gladly inform you about this in the following few paragraphs.

We are meeting early in the morning this Friday. At 7am to be exact. The meeting point is at the corner of Seymour and Cordova Street. Be there on time, because the bus won’t be waiting for you! We’ll be having lunch in Kamloops and we will arrive at our hotel around 6pm. This day is used especially for travelling, but you will see lots of beautiful nature anyway.

Saturday starts at 7:45am with the departure from the hotel and the pick-up of our breakfast. We will do lots and lots of sightseeing today. Curious how much sightseeing? Here it goes: First stop: Mount Robson. Second stop: Jasper. Third stop: Athabasca Falls (where we have lunch). Fourth stop: Columbia Icefields Centre. Fifth stop: Peyto Lake. Sixth stop: Bow Lake. Seventh stop: Checking into the hotel and visiting Lake Louise. See? I told you we’ll see a lot.

After a good night’s sleep, it’s Sunday already! We all start the day at 7:30am with breakfast at the hotel. We are leaving the hotel at 8am and are heading to Johnston Canyon. From 11am on, we can enjoy some free time! You have the chance to use the Banff Gondola, soak in hot springs or discover Banff by yourself. Later in the afternoon, we head to Emerald Lake and afterwards, we will check into our accommodation for the night: Mountain cabins. And because being in mountain cabins only isn’t good enough, we’ll have a campfire with s’mores and hot chocolate in the evening. The ultimate Canadian experience.

But, all good things come to an end. It’s Monday already. Our last day is spent with travelling again. We depart from the hotel at 8am and we’ll have lunch in beautiful Kelowna this time. The estimated arrival back in Vancouver is at 6.30pm. Time to say goodbye to everyone and wipe away the tears.

Very important! Do not forget to bring:

  • Enough warm clothes
  • A pair of gloves
  • A warm hat
  • Good shoes
  • Your bikini/ swim shorts
  • A towel
  • Sunglasses (in case the sun says hello)
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste etc.)
  • 2 pieces of ID!
  • Your camera!

I am really looking forward to Friday, not only because of the trip, but because many of you will join me and we will have an amazing time.

How was your weekend?

So you are asking me how my weekend was? Well, I would love to tell you about my weekend, because I had a great one. I spent my time well in Seattle. What Seattle? Yes, this weekend was our trip to Seattle! It was great, so sit back and read all our adventures we did over there.

It all started on Saturday early in the morning. Too early to get up. But we had to, because today was the big day. We are going to Seattle! It was 7 am and we met at Canada place. The bus was waiting to get us to the United States. There we go! We crossed the border with no problems and stopped in Bellingham to go shopping in the big outlet. Now it was even cheaper with a lot of Black Friday deals going on.

When all the shoes, clothes, purses and gifts where loaded in the bus, we continued our way to Seattle. After a little sightseeing tour we arrived at our hotel, where we prepared ourselves for a diner and night out. Our tour guide recommended a nice place where we could eat. So we went there, a nice biker bar with good music and delicious food. After our meals it was time to have some beers together. There was this one place with over a hundred different beers. We tried some of them before we decided to continue our night in a club. We ended up in a small club with a DJ playing nice songs.

The alarm went of at 8 am. It was time to discover Seattle a little more. Half asleep we arrived at the breakfast. After some food and a lot of coffee we sat in the bus for another sightseeing tour through Seattle. We arrived in the city center where some girls went shopping, while we went to the underground tour. A stand-up comedian guided us underneath the streets of Seattle. It was a really interesting and fun tour. The tour ended around noon, so lunch it was. The restaurant where we ate was next to the see, so we had a beautiful view while eating our great lunch.

In Seattle is an alley where the walls are all covered in gum. It was close to the restaurant, so we decided to take a look. It was strange and beautiful at the same time. You could even smell the sweet scent of gum. We putted our gums at the wall and continued to the cupcake shop to make a plan for the rest of the day. We decided to take the monorail to a park next to the lake to see a good view. We drank some coffee in a café there, before we had to get back to the bus. On our way back we did some duty free shopping before crossing the border of Canada. At home it was time to have a good sleep.

For everybody who joined this trip, thank you! You made this trip a lot of fun! Want to hear more stories of Seattle? Come to PuB NiGHT this Wednesday and I will tell you more while playing the Bourbon Bingo.

Whistler trip!

Just three more days till all the craziness starts. To make sure you are going well prepared to Whistler, we have made a planning of the Whistler trip. Read through and decide what to bring. We have our heated hot tub, so don’t forget to bring your swimming suit. Keep in mind there is snow now in Whistler, so bring also some warm clothes with you.

32864244234_3d904fc692_z

On Saturday we will meet at 9:30 am in front of Burrard Station. Be on time, otherwise the bus is leaving without you. We will arrive at 12 pm in Whistler. We have some little time left before the daredevils are going to bungee jumping and the alcoholics are going to the -32 degrees room to taste some vodka. After these activities it is time to go to the apartments to prepare ourselves a nice diner. After the diner it is time to check out the pubs and clubs in Whistler.

Rise and shine. It is time to have breakfast at 10 am. Afterwards we go to the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre to do some fun activities. When we are finished, we have the rest of the day to see what Whistler has more to offer. After everyone did their shopping or sightseeing, we will meet again at the apartment. We get our luggage and go back to the bus. We will be back at Burrard Station around 7 pm.

We hope you are all as much excited as we are and we will see you Saturday (and also tonight at PuB NiGHT)!

What to do on the weekend?

It’s finally Friday again! Time to do some amazing things in Vancouver this weekend!

17389183_10155108361507103_2218754490592107005_o.jpgThis weekend the INTERNeX family will go The Spring Lights Illumination in the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park. We will enjoy the amazing lights, music, cherry blossoms and the multisensory show in the park. This event is part of a bigger festival called the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival. There are several events in the VanDusen Botanical Garden, 6 walks through some of Vancouvers’ spring gardens and lots more.

Tomorrow is April Fool’s Day and International Pillow Fight Day, which means lots of fun!! Don’t forget to fool your friends and also do not always trust them because you can fall for one of their tricks too. International Pillow Fight Day is also celebrated in Vancouver. There will be a massive 15 minutes pillow fight outside the Vancouver Art Gallery by the corner of Robson Street and Howe at 3 PM. It will be amazing to participate or to just watch this craziness.

17690980_10208612464010029_949684745_n.jpgThis week was also the beginning of the Vancouver International Auto Show and you can still go there this weekend to see dozens of the latest cars on display. The show is from 10 AM until 10 PM at the Vancouver Convention Centre.

Sunday is supposed to be really sunny, so go out and explore the highlights of Vancouver as well! It will be the perfect day to do some hikes, sightseeing or visiting the outdoor farmers markets! I hope you all have a great weekend and see you tomorrow at the Queen Elizabeth Park or next week on PuB NiGHT!!
