What to do on the weekend?

This week is just about to come to an end. A few more hours, then it’s finally time to put all your work aside. And this means that for the upcoming twwo days, you can do whatever you want. But what? Here are some suggestions from my side that cover the area of music, food and sports.

Here’s what’s going on in the music world in Vancouver: the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival is taking place for the 32nd time this weekend! It’s kicking off today – June 22nd – and lasts until July 1st. There are over 150 free concerts that you can visit. In downtown, there will be three outdoor stages this Saturday and Sunday. There’s the Georgia stage, the Robson stage and the Sound of Youth stage. Music is being played from 12pm – 9pm. There are food trucks around the locations as well. Sounds like some good times are ahead.

If your absolute favorite fruit is strawberry, better listen up! This Saturday, the Strawberry Festival is taking place! This festival is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver. To be exact, at the Barclay Heritage Square. There will be musical performances, a bouncy castle, horse drawn carriage rides and of course, strawberry shortcakes. Admission is free and the fun is for young and old from 1pm – 4pm.

Ever heard of the sport Dragon Boat Racing? No? It’s a sport where 20 people are paddling in one boat in a competitive race against others. Sounds interesting? Then you should check out the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival. It is one of the largest community festivals in Vancouver. Three days long, there are races (more than 200 teams are participating), food, music and other activities that can be discovered by you. The free event is located at the Concord Pacific Place, Creekside Park and the waters of False Creek.

And if we’re already talking about sports… Don’t miss out on the following FIFA World Cup games:
Saturday:
Belgium – Tunisia                    5am
Korea Republic – Mexico        8am
Germany – Sweden                 11am

Sunday:
England – Panama                   5am
Japan – Senegal                       8am
Poland – Colombia                  11am

Have a great weekend and I hope to see many of you at our Swedish Midsommar event!

How was your weekend?

It’s Monday. Not only does it mean I have to work again, but it also means I get to tell you about my weekend. As forecasted, the sun rewarded us with her presence. But let me start with Friday.

I came home from work quite late in the evening, because I was searching for a special cream in all drug stores I could find in downtown. In the end I ended up buying it from the Real Canadian Superstore – still the best when it comes to low prices. After this exhausting shopping trip I spent an easy evening at home. 😉

42886494851_d931fb1979_nOn Saturday, a hike in Lynn Canyon Park was on the schedule. We met at 12.15pm at the Waterfront station and made our way to the park. We were very lucky with the weather and fortunately it was not too crowded. We enjoyed the nature and the break from the noise in the city. The picnic we had was down at the riverside where Euler led us. It was a little tricky to climb down to the riverside, but it was totally worth it. Surrounded by the trees and listening to the gurgling water, we were chatting and eating the snacks we brought. Afterwards, we went on to Rice Lake. The view was marvellous. Then, we had a walk around the lake. After three hours of nature to its fullest, we had ice cream and milkshakes at the “End of the Line General Store” in Lynn Valley. It was amazing and so tasty! If you happen to be there, try it! We were back in downtown at around 6pm. I went home and finished the day with a nice Skype conversation with my brother, but had to go to bed early because it was game day on Sunday.

As I already mentioned in the blogpost on Friday, the FIFA World Cup is happening right now. And since it takes place in Russia, the game schedule is pretty insane over here. I got up at 6.30am to make it to the Pint on time (doors opened at 7.45am). We arrived, just to find a huge queue of people outside the pub. I guess 95% of them were Mexicans. We attempted to find another pub, but since that wasn’t successful we came back and found a nice spot downstairs. Just 30 minutes after the kick-off, a waitress asked us to leave because we had two minors among us. Desperately searching for another pub, we missed the goal from the Mexicans *sigh*. We settled down in Malone’s and watched the second half of the match. Unfortunately, to our greatest despair, we had to witness the “defeat” of the German team. I just hope it will get better in the upcoming games. GO GERMANY!

After that game we stayed to watch Switzerland – Brazil. It’s just crazy how enthusiastic and euphoric Mexicans as well as Brazilians get when it comes to soccer. When the second match was over we all made our way home. I finished the day with walking around the Central Park in Burnaby and having a nice chat with my flatmate.

I hope you all had a good weekend and enjoyed the weather. Let’s see each other at the upcoming PuB NiGHT at The Lamplighter!

What to do on the weekend?

Finally, it is here again: The weekend. Well, and the FIFA World Cup as well. Kinda hard to decide which one I should be more excited about. Well, the World Cup is definitely more seldom, so I guess it is worth to put the weekend on second place. Sorry, weekend, I still love you.

To be precise, the soccer World Cup already started yesterday. But since we’re in Vancouver, so basically on the other side of the world, and some of us have to work, it is just not possible to watch the games early in the morning. Well, you could, before work, still lying in bed. But it’s just not the same excitement.7366316306_06cbe8e956_n
Chances are better on the weekend. The games are still early, but you can make a change of venue. Locations to watch the FIFA World Cup can be found all over Vancouver. You can find different international Pubs, e.g. English, American, Portuguese, German and a lot of others. I bet the atmosphere is better than in your bed, and you have the chance to meet people that are just as crazy about soccer. The schedule for the games (in Vancouver time) can be found here.

9317983502_e41923fa88_nIf you are less interested in soccer, the Surrey Greek Food Festival might be something for you. Local Greeks that recently came to Vancouver or lived here for some generations, established this community event more than 25 years ago. You can get freshly cooked Greek food, enjoy some Greek music and just be inspired by the foreign culture. To get there, just take the Expo Line to King George and make your way to St. Constantine and Helen orthodox church. On Saturday evening at 8pm, live music will be played by Yanis Sahamis on his Bouzouki (a mandolin like instrument).

You are neither a Foodie nor a soccer fan, then just make the best out of the weekend while enjoying the sun. The forecast says nothing but sun, so rent a bike, grab a good book and just relax in a park or go for a hike (there is the option to join our weekend excursion to Lynn Canyon Park on Saturday).

Get your sunscreen out, put your sunglasses on and get ready for the weekend.
I hope to see you on Saturday for our hike in Lynn Canyon Park.

What to do on the weekend?

Swoooosh! And another week has passed by. But what could you do the upcoming two days? Here are some ideas for you.

Soccer fans, listen up: On Saturday, the Vancouver Whitecaps are playing again! This time, it is against the New England Revolution. It’s a home game, which means it’s taking place at BC Place (777 Pacific Blvd) in Vancouver. The game starts at 2:30pm, tickets can be purchased online or on site and are from $20 upwards. So, grab some friends, buy yourself some snacks and drinks from one of the many suppliers and enjoy the game! GO WHITECAPS!

Are you a vegetarian or even vegan? Then you should not miss out on the following event: The VEG EXPO is back in town! For the 5th year in row, you can go to the Vancouver Convention Centre and check out over 200 exhibits from vegan and vegetarian companies across Canada. They showcase vegetarian and vegan products and you can even try samples. The event takes place on Sunday from 10am until 5pm. Entrance price is $20.

Since last weekend, the Kitsilano Pool is open again. You know, the longest pool in Canada. And the only saltwater pool in Vancouver. It is a great location to spend the day at. Many restaurants and cafes are located nearby the outdoor pool. The view over the Lower-Mainland, English Bay, the North Shore Mountains and the Vancouver skyline are just wonderful. You can enjoy this on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 8:30pm. During the week, it is open from 12pm until 8:30pm. The entrance price is between $3 and $6, depending on your age.

Have a great, exciting and fun weekend! See you on Sunday for our hike through the Lighthouse Park!

What to do on the weekend?

Need any distraction from all the stress at work? There are a lot of events happening in the weekend, which you can attend. So get rid of your daily habits, leave everything behind and, the most important one, have fun! If you do that, you will be ready to get to work again.

You may have noticed our event for the Super Bowl party on Sunday already. A Super Bowl is a yearly American event. It is all about the finals between the champions of the American Football Conference and the National Football Conference. I16299342_10154941497017103_8138841796386126119_nt is one of the most important sports events in the United States and is sometimes even seen as a national holiday. However, it is much more than just a football match. Big artists are performing before the match and during the break. You can all watch this in many pubs in Vancouver. We have arranged spots at the New Oxford for you. There will be a comedian there and you can win lots of prices.

Besides the Super Bowl, Canada’s Women’s National team will have a match against Mexico. This match will be the first time that they will be playing in Vancouver since the Olympics. The match starts at 3 pm on the 4rd of February. There are no tickets available for the match anymore. However, you could watch the match in one of the great sports bars of Vancouver.

Furthermore, there will be lots of comedians performing in Vancouver from the 3rd of February till the 9th of February. House on Fire comedy will take place at this weekend on the 4rd of February at 8.30 pm. This time Graham Clark and Gossamer will be filling your evening with laughter. You can get tickets at the door for only $10. You can also visit the Comedy MIX on Burrard Street at 8.00 pm and 10.30 pm where Niki Glaser will be performing. To get tickets, you have to go to the website of Comedy MIX. Tickets for the show cost $28, so they are a bit more expensive than the other comedy night. However, if you are really into comedy, you really should check it out!

Last but not least, this weekend is the first weekend that the horse show Odysseo will be playing in Under The Big White Top at Olympic Village. Definitely recommended if you like horses. The show will play till the 5th of March, so you still got time to save some money and buy tickets.

Have lots of fun in the weekend and enjoy the snow! We are looking forward to see you at our Super Bowl Party or PuB NiGHT!
