What to Do in Vancouver – sports edition

There is definitely more than hiking and ice-hockey in Vancouver 🙂

Let’s have a look at a variety of different kind of sports you can try when you’re in Vancouver. But where is the best place to do your favourite sport or try something new? Of course you can easily grab your running shoes and go for a run through the city or Stanley Park. This is also an amazing place for inline skating (rollerblading) or riding a bike. But for now back to the best place to start… A good possibility are the community centers which are located all over the city – also a great way to connect with other people while getting fit and active. Additionally you can use local fitness centres.

Outdoor (water) sports: I can highly recommend trying to stand up paddle at Sunset Beach. It looks harder than it actually is. However, it is definitely advantageous if you have a good sense of balance. In Addition, Vancouver offers many opportunities for water sports such as canoeing, kayaking or sailing. It’s so much fun trying water sports with amazing views of the skyline and the mountains.

Ball sports: There are also many opportunities to play or just watch soccer in Vancouver.
Since this sport has one of the longest playing season it’s a great way for people looking for an “all year sport”.
For those interested in tennis there is also the possibility to try racquetball and squash.
Raquetball is a raquet sport played with a hollow rubber ball. You can play on an indoor or outdoor court.
Side fact: It burns a lot of calories 😉

Hockey: Yes, Canada definitely has a thing for ice hockey; but have you ever tried ball-, broom- floor- or field hockey? Join a hockey club and find out how much fun playing in a team can be. Of course there are possibilities where you can ice skate as well. Some indoor ice rinks are even available all year.

Ultimate frisbee: Have you ever played frisbee in a professional team? Give it a try and join the Vancouver Ultimate frisbee team for playing something that might not be that well known and common in Europe. There are plenty of options finding a team suitable for all ages and levels and to play in every season.
Also another popular activity is disk golf; just like golf except with specially weighted frisbees; amazing fun!

Of course there are many other sport activities waiting for you to try them out…have fun 😉

Cheers,

– Tatjana

What to do on the weekend?

It is almost time for the weekend, so it is time to figure out what to do on the weekend. We have a few suggestions for you that you might want to check out before you make any plans!

18193778_10155234529877103_6254901922779113200_nOn Sunday we are planning on going to Bowen Island with the INTERNeX family. Bowen Island is a small island between Vancouver Island and Vancouver. Therefore, we are going by ferry to this awesome destination, which is going to be already an adventure itself. Once there you get the choice to do a hike, explore the island by scooter, do kayaking or to do stand-up paddling. You are still able to join if you would like to explore this island with us. If you want to know more about the event then check out our Facebook page and the blogpost.

If you still don’t have something planned for Saturday, we might be able to help you out with that. This weekend is the second weekend that Playland is open, so it is time to go onto all the rides and to let the adrenaline kick in. For only $36 you can get a day ticket and ride almost all rides. If you buy it online you will even save $3.

8158899125_27926f40d4_oWhen you are more into culture, Fort Langley might be the perfect place for you! Fort Langley is a small and old village only a few hours from Vancouver. While walking around in this village, you will discover all the wonders from the 19th century. If Fort Langley is a bit too far away, then you can choose to go to Gulf of Georgia Cannery in Steveston village. During your visit in Gulf of Georgia Cannery, you will learn about the history of the West Coast fishing industry. Both historic sites are free this year, so it is the time to explore and get to know British Columbia.

If you would rather experience culture by trying out different food, then you should definitely go to the Illumination Summer Night market. This market is held every weekend from May till September. There are over 200 different food and merchandise stands, so there is enough entertainment for the whole night. This year will also be the first year that it is together with a huge light show. The entrance fee is only $3, so it is definitely worth trying out.

See you at Bowen island or at next PuB NiGHT!

Review: Stand up paddling, Granville Island

Last Saturday we went to Granville Island to do stand up paddling. So, what is stand up paddling? Well, basically it’s you getting equipped with a big surfboard and a paddle, and then off you go to the water trying to keep your balance on the board while paddling. Well, actually it was a bit more than just that.

We met up in front of the Ecomarine Paddlesport Centre at Granville Island half an hour before doing the stand up paddling. We all had to sign a few documents, change to proper clothing for the activity, and of course get equipped with a paddle. After this we went to a small habour where we got our life wests and boards. Since we were nine people for this activity, we had to split up in two groups. However, this didn’t matter. When not doing the stand up paddling yourself, it was great fun to watch the other group.

Before paddling out on our great adventure we had a quick tutorial in how to stay calm and keep control while paddling in the area of Granville Island and Sunset Beach. As we went out on water it was definitely exciting and sometimes a bit challenging to navigate in between some smaller boats. However, almost all of us managed to stay on the board. This was definitely a fun experience. For those of you who didn’t have the chance to join this activity surely it can be recommended to try it out! Also remember that you’ll have the opportunity for joining another great activity this Saturday, September 13th, as we’ll be playing laser tag at Laserdome in North Vancouver.

Stand up paddling – Granville Island

Important information: Due to the fact that too few signed up for the Grouse Mountain hike this event has been cancelled. Quite a few of you Internex members suggested to rent stand up paddle boards on Granville Island instead. Great idea! So on Saturday we’ll be having a great time doing stand up paddling. We’ll be using a bit of time on doing the paperwork, then we’ll be given the equipment needed and 10 minutes  of instruction and off we go. Unfortunately all spaces are now occupied.

What to do on the weekend

It’s weekend again, and time to get out and experience some of the various great activities that Vancouver has to offer. But you might ask yourself… well here’s a couple of suggestions to help you out.

Friday

On Fridays the Rio Theatre offers you the cool opportunity to experience or perhaps reexperience good old movie classics/cult movies. This Friday, September 5th, the Rio Theatre shows the good old action packed Terminator 1 and 2 movies. The doors open at 8:45pm and the first movie starts at 9:15. The second movie starts at 11:30pm and the doors open at 11:00pm. You can of course also choose to watch both movies. A single ticket is 8$ at the entrance but you can get it for 6$ if you purchase it in advance. A double ticket cost 13$ at the entrance or you can purchase in advance and get the tickets for 10$. Rio Theatre is located at 1660 East Broadway, Vancouver close to Commercial-Braodway Station. Click here for more information on Rio Theatre.

Saturday

On Saturday you should of course join INTERNeX for stand up paddling at Granville Island. This will definitely be a fun experience! The forecast says awesome weather, so get out and enjoy the sun while it’s here.

Sunday

After a challenging hike up the Grouse grind you might want to do something more relaxing. Perhaps you want to be very early with your Christmas shopping this year… Visit the Porto Bello Market. Here you’ll also support local designers, producers and artists. You can also listen to live music while you do your shopping. At the the market you can buy fashion clothing, jewelry, various pieces of art (for instance photography art) etc. The market takes place in Creekside Recreation Centre in the Olympic Village. You can get more information about the market here.

Hope you’ll all have a nice and enjoyable weekend, and don’t forget to sign up for the dodge ball tournament happening on Monday, September 8th. You can sign up through Facebook here. Also remember to sign up for our fun and exciting laser tag event here.
