A new addition to the PR-Team!

To those of you wondering who the new girl was on the Salt Spring Island trip, hi! It was me! Some of you already got to know me a little, however, I will introduce myself to those who did not and those who would like to get to know me a little better.

My name is Angy. I am 19 years old and from The Netherlands, yes, the flat country known for its tulips and windmills. I do not want to ruin your vision of the country, but I can confirm you do not see those everywhere you go. Truth is, when you visit the Netherlands, you will most likely see rain. And bikes. Lots of bikes (we need something to keep us in shape, right?!). Time to get back on topic.

I am a third-year International Leisure Management student at NHTV Breda. The first semester of this school year I went on an exchange to London, so I already experienced what it is like to live abroad. However, I had never been outside of Europe. Going to North America has been a dream of mine since I was little (yes, this tall Dutchie was short too, once upon a time) and when I heard I could do my 6-month practicum in Vancouver, I was more than happy. Living and working here will be a challenge, one that I am excited to take!

I cannot wait to discover all that INTERNeX and Vancouver itself have to offer and I hope you want to be part of my journey!

The PR-team welcomes a new family member!

Guess what people: there is a new face when you enter the INTERNeX office. It is mine and in case you did not had the luck of meeting me yet, then here is your chance of getting to know me a little.

I am a 24-year old girl that listens to the name Nadine. I was born in Basel, a wonderful city in Switzerland. And before you get your hopes up: no, I do not ski or snowboard. Shocking and disappointing, I know. But hey! I am a big chocolate lover, so that makes all good between us, right?

2.5 years ago, I made my first personal big step and moved to the Netherlands. So I was switching from Swiss to Dutch cheese and from breathtaking mountains to absolute flatness. But to be more exactly regarding the geographical content, I moved to the lovely city Breda, where I pursue a study called International Leisure Management. This study is also the reason why you can find me now here in Vancouver doing a practicum for the next 7 months.

It is not the first time I find myself in Canada; I have been here for holidays in 2009 already. Wow, that was a very long time ago (I gotta feeling was THE hit then, feeling old yet?)! Being back means I am ready for new adventures and to create tons of new memories. I really hope you will support me in doing so!

Candidate Exposé – Kristina Roeder

My name is Kristina Roeder and I’m 20 years old. I am from Aachen in Germany and I’m also studying in Aachen. My studies include German literature, linguistics and philosophy and I’m a fourth semester student.

Exploring Canada was on my bucket list for a really long time. I saw a lot of amazing photographs of the countryside and heard just positive things about Canadians beforehand and I can say that my expectations were really not disappointing. The nature and especially the Rocky Mountains are just amazing and I’m really glad that I chose Canada and Vancouver.

A German agency gave me the INTERNeX contact information and after my first Skype meeting with Timothy I was sure that I was going to make use of the INTERNeX services. My internship company was really good and the weekend trips and Pub Nights were amazing.

I did an internship at a theatre and I enjoyed it. The team was really nice and it was good getting a look into the company and their work. I chose doing an internship, because it had to do it for my studies. I worked as a marketing intern and learned a lot about marketing strategies and public relations. I really liked the company and the people working there. It was a good experience and I’m glad that I got the chance getting to know the company and a bit about marketing.

To be successful at the company I interned, you have to work independently. The people working there don’t always have time to come to your desk and give you a new job. So you should find useful things to do on your own sometimes or go to them and ask them for a project you can help them with.

My practicum was a part of my university studies and it was really useful for that. It was useful for my career goals as well and besides that a great personal experience.

I lived in a homestay in South Vancouver with three other students and my host mum, who I liked really much. The only negative aspect was, that my room didn’t had a window, but it was still good living there. INTERNeX helped me finding the homestay.

During my first weekend in Vancouver I was a bit homesick, but after making new friends and going on weekend trips I was fine.

My first impression about Vancouver was as good as my last impression. Vancouver is a beautiful city and it was a pleasure living there, even if it was just for three months. I’m sure that it was not my last trip to Vancouver.

I joined nearly every pub night during my stay in Vancouver and each one was so much fun. I joined the Kelowna weekend trip and lots of other day trips. Each trip was amazing and I’m glad I got to see a lot of beautiful places and got to know amazing people. Iris, Tess, Danielle and Janel did a great job! I visited nearly everything you can visit in Vancouver and also Kelowna, Whistler, Banff, Jasper and Seattle.

I love the combination of living in a big city and living so close to such a stunning nature. Canadians are incredibly kind and polite, which is really strange at the beginning if you’re from Germany.

My personal highlight was my Rocky-Mountain-trip with my dad during my stay in Canada. We walked on frozen lakes, did snow walks and walked through the Rockies. We took the “Banff Gondola“ and I had the most stunning view in my life so far.

This experience definetely inspired me to travel more! After my studies I want to travel again for a longer time and I want to go to New Zealand. The first thing I did when I arrived home was visiting my family and friends and I slept a lot to conquer my jet lag…

INTERNeX Through the Looking Glass -Destination Colombia

Amiel here with the latest INTERNeX Destination after Wednesday’s post about Ireland. We’re back in the Americas but not quite home. We’re going further to the south where the conquistadors came to take the land many, many years ago.

 

Colombia, the gate to South America. Just pick a climate and you’ll find it there. It has deserts, jungles, coast lines or snowy peaks, you name it. And each of these areas is bursting with colors and beauty.
This piece of Latin America used to be known as a country riddled with crimes and powerful drug lords. However, it has been reinventing itself in recent years and Medellín, City of Eternal Spring, was even nominated one of the most innovative cities in 2012.
In the same year Colombia was even crowned as the happiest country in the world. Why do you think that is? Well, they have the second highest biodiversity of animal and plant life in the whole world. They have the best coffee and beautiful natural phenomena like Caño Cristales. Colombia is also pretty rich in culture with Cali, the capital of Salsa or the legend of El Dorado.
This country has so much to offer, I can’t even tell you about it without writing a book or two. That would make anyone proud of his or her country happy right?

So my suggestion? Check out Colombia for yourself! You will most certainly be blown away by what you see there.
I for one can’t wait until I get the chance to visit my Colombian friends I made during my time in Peru.

INTERNeX Through the Looking Glass -Destination Ireland

I really like this quote, because I can actually feel myself changing every time I go out to a different place. It’s an incredible feeling!

Welcome back, Amiel here. After talking about Australia and New Zealand last week, let’s dig a tunnel right through the center of the Earth back to Europe.

Ireland, the country where you can find a leprechaun’s pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or get 3 wishes if you manage to catch one. It’s a magical with lots of myths and an amazing culture. I’m sure you’ve already heard about or even might have seen Riverdance. It’s a breathtaking theatrical show with traditional Irish dance and music.
There’s also the capital city Dublin, home of the famous Guinness Brewery. Speaking of Guinness, here’s a fun fact! Did you know that the Guinness family moved to Vancouver and built the Lions Gate Bridge in 1937? And this is only one of the many connections Canada and Ireland share. Even more than 14% of the whole Canadian population are of full or partial Irish descent.
Ireland is one of my favorite countries I’ve been to in Europe. It has many beautiful coastlines and places to visit and the people are extremely friendly. You should go check it out some day and let yourself be enchanted as well.
